Who do you think will win?

AEK Athens and Real Madrid are at very different points in their Champions League campaigns right now, and that contrast could not be more stark. The Yellow-Blacks have stumbled badly after a bright opening, while Jose Mourinho has his Madrid side purring along in a way that makes them look genuinely dangerous regardless of where they are playing. This is a fixture with a clear favourite on paper, but as anyone who has followed European football long enough knows, OPAP Arena in Athens is not always the most straightforward place to go and get three points.

Madrid arrive in Greece on the back of six straight wins across all competitions, looking every inch the side that Mourinho has reshaped with real purpose. AEK, meanwhile, have lost four of their last five, including some heavy defeats that have exposed genuine vulnerabilities in their squad. Marko Nikolic has problems to solve and not much time to solve them before a side loaded with Champions League pedigree rolls into town.

AEK Athens vs Real Madrid Match Details

This fixture takes place at OPAP Arena in Athens and is part of the Champions League league stage, with both clubs still navigating their way through the expanded format. Madrid are fourth in the overall table with a perfect nine points from three games. AEK sit 29th with three points, and the gap between those two positions tells you pretty much everything about where these clubs are at right now in this competition.

Team News

AEK Athens have a few concerns heading into this one, with their options slightly limited in key areas. Real Madrid are also without a couple of notable names but remain exceptionally well stocked in attack.

  • Thomas Strakosha (hand) is out for AEK Athens
  • Joao Mario and Lazaros Rota are both doubts due to illness and need assessing before kickoff
  • Luka Jovic is expected to lead the line for the hosts
  • Barnabas Varga is AEK’s top scorer this season with nine goals in 13 appearances and should start
  • Rodrygo is definitely out for Real Madrid with a knee injury
  • Raul Asencio misses out with a leg problem
  • Vinicius Junior is available and expected to start, with his domestic ban not applying here
  • Federico Valverde is back in training after a hamstring issue and could make the squad

Predicted Lineups

Nikolic looks set to go with a front two of Jovic and Varga, which at least gives AEK some physical and technical threat up top. If Rota and Joao Mario are passed fit, they slot in, but the gaffer will need to make those calls late. The concern for AEK is whether their midfield can cope with the quality Madrid will bring through the centre of the park.

Mourinho appears set to go with Yan Diomande on the right of his attack, with Arda Guler shifting into central midfield to accommodate that. Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe will operate in the final third alongside Vinicius, which is an extraordinary combination to throw at a side already struggling for confidence. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal behind a back four that includes Denzel Dumfries and Ferland Carreras as the full backs, with Antonio Rudiger and Ryan Huijsen at centre back.

Recent Form

AEK’s campaign has gone off the rails after a decent start. They opened their Champions League account with a 1-0 win over LASK Linz, which looked promising, but they have since been taken apart by Shakhtar Donetsk (3-1) and Manchester City (5-1). Conceding nine goals in two games is not just a bad run, it is a sign of deep structural problems at the back. Those results were not flattering to deceive either, they were genuine one-sided affairs that left AEK looking out of their depth against top-level opposition.

In domestic football, the story is similarly grim. AEK have lost their last two league fixtures against PAOK and Panathinaikos, which makes it four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions. That is the kind of run that dents confidence, and the timing could not be worse with Real Madrid arriving. The only real positive Nikolic can cling to is that his side do score goals, with Varga in particular looking sharp, but the question is whether they can keep it tight enough at the back to stay in the game.

Real Madrid, by contrast, have been exceptional. Six wins on the bounce across La Liga and the Champions League, including a 4-1 demolition of RB Leipzig and a 3-0 stroll past Racing de Santander last weekend. The manner in which they bounced back from losing the Madrid derby has been impressive, and Mourinho has his squad firing with real intensity. They look organised, clinical and very difficult to beat right now.

Head-to-Head Record

The head-to-head between these two is genuinely interesting given how infrequently they have met. Their first encounters came in the old UEFA Cup in 1985, where AEK won the first leg 1-0 before getting absolutely thumped 5-0 at the Bernabeu in the return. Then in the 2002 to 2003 Champions League group stage, both games finished level, including a 3-3 draw at the Athens venue. So AEK have never actually lost to Real Madrid at home in European competition, which is a curious little stat.

What is also worth flagging is that Real Madrid have won just one of their last eight away UEFA matches against Greek opposition, drawing five of them. Greek sides tend to make life uncomfortable for big clubs on their own patch, and with OPAP Arena likely to be rocking, Madrid cannot treat this as a formality. The head-to-head record is genuinely more balanced than the current form table suggests.

Key Stats

  • AEK have conceded nine goals in their last two Champions League games, which points to serious defensive fragility
  • Real Madrid have won six straight in all competitions and are yet to drop a point in this season’s Champions League
  • Barnabas Varga has nine goals in 13 appearances for AEK this season, making him a genuine threat even against elite opposition

AEK Athens vs Real Madrid Betting Tips

The overall angle here is pretty clear. Real Madrid are the better side by a significant margin, they are in outstanding form, and AEK are coming into this match with almost no momentum and leaky defensive record. That said, the head-to-head quirks and Madrid’s mixed record against Greek clubs on the road mean the hosts covering themselves with some credit is not out of the question. Expect goals at both ends, Madrid to win, and a few cards given the intensity a European night in Athens tends to bring.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. AEK have enough quality up front with Jovic and Varga to threaten, and they are playing at home in front of a crowd that will drive them forward. Madrid’s back line, while solid, has shown it can be exposed in open games. Given AEK’s attacking numbers this season and the defensive frailties Madrid showed in certain stretches of recent matches, backing both sides to get on the scoresheet makes good sense.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards looks appealing here. European nights in Athens get feisty, and AEK’s players will be working hard to close down a Madrid side who will move the ball quickly and draw fouls through the likes of Vinicius and Mbappe in wide areas. A frustrated home side chasing the game in the second half is a reliable recipe for bookings.

Corners Prediction

Over 10 corners is the call. Real Madrid tend to dominate possession and work the ball wide constantly, generating corners through their full backs and wide attackers pressing into the final third. AEK, when chasing a deficit, will also be pushing men forward and inviting Madrid to clear their lines and force more set pieces. This one should rack up the corner count steadily across 90 minutes.

Correct Score Prediction

AEK Athens 1-3 Real Madrid. The hosts will nick one through either Varga or Jovic, because their attacking output this season has been genuinely impressive, but Madrid will have too much quality in the final third and should put three past a defence that has been all over the place in recent weeks.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 3.5 goals. AEK are leaking goals at an alarming rate and Madrid have been ruthless in front of goal. Even accounting for AEK giving a better account of themselves at home, the sheer firepower that Mourinho can deploy with Mbappe, Bellingham, Vinicius and Diomande suggests this should be a high-scoring affair.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Kylian Mbappe to score first. He has been in devastating form for Madrid and with Vinicius drawing attention on the opposite flank, Mbappe should find space to exploit early on against an AEK back line that has struggled to cope with pace and direct running in recent Champions League outings.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 3.5 Goals Over 3.5
Real Madrid To Win Real Madrid

All three legs point in the same direction: a high-scoring Madrid win where AEK contribute with a goal of their own but ultimately cannot live with the quality across the pitch that Mourinho’s side will bring.

Final Match Prediction

Real Madrid are the form side, the better squad and the team with everything to play for in terms of maintaining their perfect Champions League record. AEK have genuine attacking threats in Varga and Jovic, and the home crowd will give them a boost, but four defeats in five games tells you all you need to know about where this side is mentally and physically right now.

Mourinho will set his side up to control the game, use the width, and punish AEK on the counter whenever the hosts commit players forward. The Greek side will probably get a goal given their front two are in decent nick, but Madrid should have far too much overall. AEK Athens 1-3 Real Madrid, with Mbappe running the show from start to finish.
