Celta Vigo
LevanteCelta Vigo and Levante are both limping into this one, and that makes it a genuinely fascinating watch from a betting perspective. Two sides who needed a result badly going into the weekend, both carrying a bit of doubt after poor showings last time out. The question is whether Celta can use home soil to drag themselves back on track, or whether Levante have enough about them on the road to nick something.
Let us break this one down properly, because there is a bit more going on under the surface than the league tables suggest.
This La Liga fixture takes place at Estadio de Balaidos in Vigo, with Celta looking to put back to back disappointments behind them in front of their own supporters. Levante make the trip north knowing a point would do them no harm at all given where they currently sit in the standings.
Celta have a few headaches in the treatment room ahead of this one, though Claudio Giraldez will be glad to have his senior attacking players available after rotating for the Europa League in midweek.
Levante are also carrying some injury concerns heading into the weekend.
Celta look set to make several changes after fielding a rotated side against Union SG. Giraldez should bring Iago Aspas back into the fold as the focal point of the attack, with Ferran Jutgla and Ilaix Moriba also expected to come back in. That should give Celta considerably more quality going forward than they showed in midweek.
Celta Vigo: Radu; Rodriguez, Lago, Caceres; Carreira, Moriba, Febas, Galan; Gonzalez, Jutgla, Aspas
Levante boss Luis Castro has a fairly settled shape to work with once he gets his injury doubts sorted. Adrian de la Fuente returning is a boost, and Roger Brugue continues on the right after a strong personal season. Petar Ratkov leads the line again as he looks for that elusive first goal since his loan move from Lazio.
Levante: Ryan; Perez, Ndukwe, De la Fuente, Toljan; Olasagasti, Requena; Brugue, Romero, Fernandez; Ratkov
Celta are in a rough patch and there is no dressing it up. Three games without a win across all competitions, including a 3-0 hammering at Rayo Vallecano in La Liga at the end of October, and then that Europa League home defeat to Union SG in midweek. They are sitting tenth in the league with 12 points from 11 games, a return of two wins, six draws and three defeats, and while that is not a catastrophic position, the manner of some of those results will have concerned Giraldez. The good news is that the strongest XI was not on show in midweek, so there should be a step up in quality here.
Levante have had a mixed run of late. They were picking up points steadily through mid October, taking five from three against Sevilla, Deportivo La Coruna and Athletic Bilbao, which looked promising for a side trying to consolidate their top flight status. But back to back defeats to Real Sociedad and then Atletico Madrid at the end of the month have brought them back down to earth, and they head into this one in 18th place with just 10 points. That is relegation territory, and Castro will know his side need to start picking up results fast.
What makes this interesting is that Levante’s away form is a real concern. They are yet to win on the road in La Liga this season, drawing three and losing three from their six away fixtures. That is not the sort of record you want when heading to Balaidos to face a side who may be out of form but still have Iago Aspas pulling the strings on home turf.
Celta have the better record across the history of this fixture, winning 16 of the 32 previous meetings compared to Levante’s seven wins. But recent history is a little more nuanced. Levante have only won one of their last six against Celta, which looks bad on paper, but three of their last four wins over the Sky Blues have come away from home. That away day trend is at least something for Levante to hold onto, even if their current road record suggests it may be tough to replicate.
The most recent meeting went Levante’s way, a 3-2 win back in May, so Castro’s men will know they are capable of hurting this Celta side. That said, context matters, and Celta having their full attack available changes things considerably compared to some of those previous encounters.
This one feels like a game where Celta’s home advantage and the return of their stronger attacking players tips the balance in their favour, but Levante are not a side you can completely write off given they have shown they can score on the road. I am expecting goals at both ends and a home win, but the margins could be tight.
Celta will be pushing for a result at Balaidos and with Aspas and Jutgla causing problems wide and in behind, expect the Sky Blues to win plenty of corners as they put Levante under pressure. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable call in a game where the home side will likely dominate possession and territory.
Both teams are carrying a bit of uncertainty defensively, and Celta bringing back their stronger attack should open this game up. Levante need to chase the game if they fall behind, which creates space. Over 2.5 goals is the call here, and it feels like it has a decent chance of landing given the stakes for both sides.
Yes is the call for both teams to score. Celta have been leaking goals despite being at home, and Levante have shown through Brugue and their recent attacking form that they can find the net. Even against stronger sides, Levante have contributed to games with goals, and that is not changing here.
Iago Aspas is the standout shout. He is back in the starting lineup after being rested in midweek, he is at home, and he is the kind of player who raises his game when Celta need a lift. The captain loves these occasions and with Levante shipping goals on the road, the conditions are right for Aspas to get on the scoresheet early.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Celta Vigo to Win |
| Both Teams to Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Iago Aspas |
A home win where both sides contribute goals and the captain opens the scoring fits the narrative of this game perfectly, with Celta needing a response and Aspas being the man most likely to provide it.
Celta Vigo have too much quality at home for a Levante side who have not won on their travels all season. Bringing Aspas, Jutgla and Moriba back into the XI transforms them as an attacking unit, and they should have enough to see this off. That said, Levante are not completely toothless, and Brugue in particular is capable of making things uncomfortable.
The prediction is Celta Vigo 2-1 Levante. Enough to get the three points on the board for the Sky Blues, but Levante make them work for it right to the end.
