Grimsby Town
Shrewsbury TownGrimsby Town need a response and they need it fast. After going seven games unbeaten to open the League Two season, David Artell’s side were brought back down to earth with a 2-1 defeat to Newport County last weekend, and now they face a straightforward choice: bounce back at Blundell Park and potentially go top of the table, or let momentum slip at exactly the wrong moment.
This is the kind of fixture that can define early season runs. Shrewsbury Town arrive in North East Lincolnshire sitting 18th, with a poor away record and more questions than answers about their form. But the Mariners have shown a tendency to drop points they should not, so there is no room for complacency. The table could look very different by five o’clock Saturday evening, and Grimsby’s players will know exactly what is on the line.
The fixture takes place at Blundell Park, the home of Grimsby Town, in League Two. This is a fourth tier clash between two sides heading in opposite directions, with the hosts chasing top spot and the visitors desperate to put some daylight between themselves and the relegation places.
Grimsby have one enforced change to consider after a concerning moment at Newport. Mark Shelton was hauled off after just 36 minutes at Rodney Parade, which will ring alarm bells for Artell heading into a game his side cannot afford to take lightly.
Artell looks set to stick broadly with the same shape that has served him well through the opening weeks of the campaign, likely keeping Green at the heart of things in a midfield five. The main dilemma is that central midfield slot vacated by the Shelton withdrawal, and Reynolds looks the obvious answer. Morgan up top gives them pace and a focal point.
For Shrewsbury, Cowan has settled on a back five and there is no reason to deviate from it now. Josh Davison and George Lloyd will work together again up front, with Isaac Fletcher operating just behind them after his dramatic late goal last weekend, even if the celebrations were cut short almost immediately.
Grimsby’s form up to last weekend was genuinely impressive for this level. Seven games unbeaten, wins over Exeter City, Bristol Rovers and Crawley Town, and a defensive record that sits among the very best in League Two with only eight goals conceded from eight outings. That is an average of one per game, which tells you this is a well organised side that does not throw chances away at the back. The problem has been at the other end, or more accurately in moments where they have let promising positions dissolve into dropped points. Back to back draws when they had leads against Fleetwood and Accrington stung, and the Newport defeat was the first time they have actually lost.
Shrewsbury’s numbers paint a grimmer picture. Two wins, two draws and four defeats from eight games. They are three points above the bottom four and are yet to show they can pick up points away from New Meadow on a consistent basis. Their one road point so far puts them among the worst travelling sides in the division, alongside clubs already looking nervously at the trap door. The only real positive is that they are unbeaten in three, following a win over Northampton with draws against Crewe and Colchester, but two of those three have been draws and both came at home.
That Colchester draw last weekend deserves a mention because it encapsulates Shrewsbury’s season so far. They came back from behind, Fletcher looked to have nicked it in the 92nd minute, then Moses Sesay pulled it back to 2-2 moments later. From near ecstasy to nothing. A side with real momentum and confidence does not let that happen in injury time. Cowan will know it, and his players will know it too.
Grimsby have not lost to Shrewsbury since 2015, and that long unbeaten run in this fixture will give Artell’s squad plenty of confidence going into the weekend. The two clubs met twice inside three weeks last season, with the first game ending 1-1 at New Meadow before Grimsby won 1-0 at Blundell Park in what turned out to be the final meeting of 2025. Home advantage has counted for the Mariners in recent times, and that trend looks set to continue.
This sets up well for Grimsby on paper. They have the motivation of a response result, the home advantage, a superior defensive record, and a decade without losing to this opponent. Shrewsbury’s away form is genuinely alarming and there is little in their recent performances to suggest that changes here. The Mariners should have enough to win this comfortably, and the markets reflect that.
Iwan Morgan is the obvious shout here. He is leading the line for Grimsby and against a Shrewsbury defence that has struggled for consistency on the road, the Welsh forward will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet early. Artell will want his attackers to press hard from the first whistle and Morgan is the man expected to be on the end of things.
Shrewsbury will need to work hard defensively and the pressure of trying to contain a Grimsby side with something to prove could lead to some niggly moments. With a back five under pressure on the road, fouls in midfield and around the edge of the area are likely to stack up. Over three and a half cards looks a reasonable punt in a game where Shrewsbury will be doing plenty of defensive legwork.
Grimsby will dominate territory and look to work the ball wide regularly, especially with Vernam on the flank causing problems. Shrewsbury defending deep will invite pressure and corner opportunities. Over nine corners in this one looks like a solid market to target given how one sided the territorial battle could become.
Grimsby’s defensive solidity means this is unlikely to be a free scoring affair, but they have the quality to get two or three past a Shrewsbury side that has shipped goals away from home. Under three and a half total goals feels right, though Grimsby getting at least two feels very much on. A tight but decisive home win rather than a thriller is the most likely outcome.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Grimsby Town to Win |
| First Goalscorer | Iwan Morgan |
| Total Corners | Over 9 Corners |
Grimsby controlling the game, Morgan making his mark early and the hosts piling on pressure through wide areas makes all three of these picks work naturally together.
Grimsby Town 2-0 Shrewsbury Town is where the logic points. The Mariners have a point to prove after Newport, they have not lost to the Shrews in over a decade, and they are facing a side that cannot buy a point away from home. Artell will have his side fired up, the crowd at Blundell Park will be buzzing with the prospect of going top, and Shrewsbury simply do not have the away day quality to handle that kind of atmosphere and pressure.
A clean sheet looks genuinely achievable given how the Mariners have defended this season, and the goals should come with patience and width. This is a game Grimsby win without too many alarms. Back them to do the job.
