There is something grimly familiar about this one. Two sides who started the season with a win, then completely fell off a cliff. Both sitting on the wrong end of the table. Both desperately needing something from Sunday afternoon. When you strip it all back, this is a six pointer dressed up as a mid September Eredivisie fixture, and that makes it far more interesting than it might look on paper.

Heerenveen have the home advantage and a ridiculously good record against this opposition, but Robin Veldman knows that counts for nothing if his side keep throwing away leads like they have been doing. Two points from a possible twelve is a miserable return, and with trips to Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven looming on the horizon, a home defeat here could send the whole season spiralling before October has even arrived. For Telstar, the situation is arguably worse. A fourth straight defeat would drag them into the bottom three, and their upcoming schedule includes AZ and Ajax. If they do not arrest this slide now, it could turn very ugly very quickly.

Heerenveen vs Telstar Match Details

Heerenveen take on Telstar at the Abe Lenstra Stadion in Heerenveen on Sunday the 13th of September 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30pm. The match is part of round six of the 2026/27 Eredivisie season.

Team News

Heerenveen have a couple of injury concerns heading into this one, and Veldman faces a selection dilemma in the middle of the park. Telstar travel with a slightly cleaner bill of health, though their recent performances suggest the problems run deeper than personnel.

  • Mees Hilgers (knee) remains sidelined and is still yet to make his debut for Heerenveen.
  • Mats Egbring (ankle) is also out for the hosts.
  • Marcus Linday has missed the last two games with a knee problem and looks unlikely to feature.
  • Dirk Proper is a doubt after being forced off injured against AZ Alkmaar, which could force a midfield reshuffle.
  • Nokkvi Thorisson had his red card from the Cambuur match overturned and is available for Telstar.
  • Summer signing Ar’Jany Martha made his debut off the bench in midweek and is likely to be eased in gradually again.

Predicted Lineups

Nolhan Courtens should keep his place in the Heerenveen midfield after stepping in during Linday’s absence and holding down the role for two consecutive starts. The big question is who lines up alongside him, with Dirk Proper’s fitness uncertain. If Proper cannot go, Veldman will need to find a solution, though the rest of the lineup looks fairly settled.

Heerenveen expected XI: Klaverboer; Braude, Kersten, Willemsen, Zagaritis; Courtens, Proper; Trenskow, Meerveld, Rivera; Vente

Telstar’s Henk Brugge will likely stick with a recognisable shape, though the back line has been leaking goals at an alarming rate and it is hard to see how much shuffling the cards would actually help without a fundamental change in defensive structure. Martha will probably come off the bench again rather than starting from the off.

Telstar expected XI: Koeman Jr; Peersman, Soualhia, Valk; Hardeveld, Owusu, Rossen, Alders; Brouwer, Mendes; Thorisson

Recent Form

Heerenveen’s form since matchday one has been desperately poor. After picking up that opening day win, they have not managed to win any of the four games since, taking just two points from a possible twelve. What makes it more frustrating from a Heerenveen perspective is the manner of the defeats. They have now thrown away a 2-1 lead in back to back games, first drawing 2-2 with Willem II to close out August, then surrendering a 2-1 advantage to lose 3-2 against Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar. Veldman was vocal in his frustration after that latest setback, singling out his side’s lack of defensive solidity, and he was not wrong. You cannot keep giving teams a route back into games and expect to take anything from them.

Telstar’s story is one of early promise completely unravelling. That shock 2-1 win over NEC on the opening day looked like a statement, and they actually went into this run of form unbeaten across five league games stretching back into last season. Since then it has all gone wrong. Four defeats in a row, including a 2-2 draw with Cambuur where they were two goals down and a man short before somehow clawing it back, only to then lose to FC Twente in midweek when Sondre Orjasaeter’s penalty late in the second half proved decisive.

The numbers tell the defensive story for Telstar more starkly than any match report could. In their last ten league games without a clean sheet, they have conceded more than one goal on six occasions and let in 21 in total during that run. The remarkable thing is that goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr has actually prevented more goals than any other keeper in the Eredivisie this season. You have to wonder just how many they would have shipped without him. Until that back line is fixed, results are not going to improve.

Head-to-Head Record

The head to head between these sides tells you almost everything you need to know going into Sunday. Across eight previous meetings, Heerenveen have won seven and drawn one. Telstar have not beaten De Superfriezen in any of those encounters. The most recent meeting came in March of this season, when Heerenveen won 3-0 to complete a league double having already beaten Telstar 3-2 in the reverse fixture. Dominant does not quite cover it.

For all their struggles in recent weeks, Heerenveen will know this is a fixture they historically turn up for. Telstar, meanwhile, face the unenviable task of not only trying to fix a defence that has been all over the place, but doing so against the one side they simply cannot seem to beat. That historical weight matters, particularly when confidence is fragile in both camps.

Key Stats

  • Heerenveen have won 7 and drawn 1 of their 8 previous meetings with Telstar, with no defeats.
  • Telstar have gone 10 consecutive league games without a clean sheet, conceding 21 goals across that run.
  • Heerenveen have taken just 2 points from their last 4 Eredivisie games, throwing away 2-1 leads in two of those matches.

Heerenveen vs Telstar Betting Tips

The form guide for both sides is grim reading, but the head to head record, home advantage and Telstar’s catastrophic defensive numbers all point in one direction. Heerenveen should have enough to get over the line here, even if it is not going to be a classic. The betting angles below reflect a game where goals are likely but Telstar’s defensive horrors are the dominant narrative.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Heerenveen have been shipping goals themselves, and Telstar have shown they can contribute going forward even when things are falling apart around them. Both teams have struggled to keep clean sheets, and this looks like a game where the net will be rattled at both ends. Back BTTS at Yes.

Over & Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. Their recent meetings have produced goals freely, and both sides have shown they will concede rather than batten down the hatches. The last two head to heads produced 3-0 and 3-2 scorelines. A low scoring bore draw feels like the least likely outcome here. Back Over 2.5 goals.

Correct Score Prediction

Heerenveen 2-1 Telstar. The hosts should have enough quality to win this comfortably given their historical superiority, but Telstar’s spirit has been evident even in defeat, and they are likely to nick one. A 2-1 home win mirrors the recent head to head pattern and suits the current form context for both sides.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Luuk Vente is the man to back here. The Heerenveen striker is the focal point of their attack and should have plenty of opportunities against a Telstar back line that has been shipping goals to almost everyone it faces this season. With Heerenveen needing to make a statement at home, expect Vente to get on the ball early and often.

Corners Prediction

Over 9.5 corners. Heerenveen will be looking to get bodies forward and press for a decisive result at home, while Telstar will likely invite pressure and look to hit on the counter. That kind of dynamic tends to generate a high volume of set pieces, and with both sides having shown they can dominate possession phases, the corner count should be generous.

Cards Prediction

Over 2.5 cards. Telstar will need to put in some tough challenges to stay in the game, and a side with their back against the wall in a must win situation rarely keeps things completely clean. Heerenveen’s players will also be frustrated if things are not clicking early. Expect the referee to have a busy afternoon.

Bet Builder Tip

Combine Heerenveen to win, both teams to score, and over 9.5 corners in a bet builder. The home win is grounded in the head to head dominance and Telstar’s defensive frailties. BTTS reflects the fact that neither side has been keeping clean sheets. The corners call speaks to the nature of a home side pushing for a result against a team sitting back and soaking up pressure. All three selections complement each other nicely.

Final Match Prediction

History is firmly on Heerenveen’s side here, and while Veldman’s men have been anything but convincing recently, this is the kind of fixture they should be winning. Telstar’s defensive numbers are genuinely alarming, and playing away from home against a side with that kind of head to head stranglehold is not going to make things any easier for Henk Brugge’s players.

Telstar will show spirit, as they have done even in their recent defeats, and they should score. But Heerenveen to take all three points feels like the right call. Prediction: Heerenveen 2-1 Telstar.
