Marseille
ToulouseCan Marseille keep their home form rolling against a Toulouse side that has quietly been one of the harder teams to beat in Ligue 1 this season? That is the question worth sitting with before this one. Because on the surface it looks like a comfortable home win for OM, but dig a little deeper and you will find a Toulouse outfit that has not lost away from home yet this campaign and that loves nothing more than a shootout. This preview breaks down the form, the numbers and where the value sits.
What we have here is two sides that both love to attack, both leak goals and both carry genuine threat going forward. That combination makes this one of the more interesting Ligue 1 fixtures on the calendar right now, and there are plenty of angles to work with from a betting perspective.
This Ligue 1 matchday nine fixture takes place at Stade Velodrome in Marseille, one of the most atmospheric grounds in European football. The occasion is a straight domestic league encounter, with both sides looking to climb the early season table and make a statement going into the November international break.
Bruno Genesio has a fairly settled squad to pick from, though there is one notable absentee to work around. For Toulouse, there are a few more question marks in the build up to this one.
Genesio looks set to name a strong XI with most of his first choice players available. The back line picks itself without Cornelius, with Egan-Riley likely to continue after his goal last week alongside Aguerd. Further forward, Abdelli, Paixao and Gouiri give Marseille real pace and creativity in the final third.
Marseille: De Lange; Weah, Egan-Riley, Aguerd, Palmieri; Nnadi, Hojbjerg; Gomes, Abdelli, Paixao; Gouiri
Toulouse are without Donnum through suspension and have injury doubts elsewhere, so Askou may need to be pragmatic. Tengstedt leads the line and Russell-Rowe offers real mobility off him. Restes in goal has been in outstanding form and will be busy here.
Toulouse: Restes; Messali, McKenzie, Nicolaisen, Tape; Casseres, Sigur; Hidalgo, Jorgensen, Tengstedt; Russell-Rowe
Marseille are in decent nick right now. Three consecutive Ligue 1 wins tells you the momentum is there, even if the performances have not always been clean. A 4-3 win over Le Havre last time out is a perfect example of what Genesio’s side are about at the moment. Brilliant going forward, a bit shaky at the back, but finding a way to get the job done. They average the joint most goals per game in Ligue 1 at 2.3, which is an eye catching number, though the expected goals conceded figure of 18.5 tells you the defensive structure is still a work in progress. At home they have a perfect record when they score first, and they are unbeaten in their last five Stade Velodrome league outings when netting the opener. Getting that first goal is absolutely key for OM.
Toulouse have been quietly impressive this season without making too many headlines. A 0-0 draw with Troyes last weekend was a blip after four straight matches with multiple goals, but the five game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 is worth noting. More relevantly for this fixture, Toulouse have not lost a single away game in the league so far this campaign, and they have scored at least twice in every Ligue 1 road trip. That away form is genuinely encouraging and suggests they will not come here to park the bus.
The Donnum suspension hurts their attacking options, and the calf and hamstring doubts add further uncertainty to Askou’s planning. But the bones of this Toulouse team are solid enough that they should still carry a real threat in the final third even without their full complement.
Marseille’s home record against Toulouse over the years is formidable. They have not lost any of their last 14 competitive home meetings against this opponent in normal time, which is the kind of statistic that commands respect. History is firmly on OM’s side when these two meet at Stade Velodrome.
That said, Toulouse have shown they are capable of making a game of it here. They have taken points in two of their last three Ligue 1 visits to this ground, including a 2-2 draw in this exact fixture last season. So while Marseille have the historical edge, Toulouse are not a side that simply rolls over on the road against bigger opposition.
This has goals written all over it. Two sides who both like to attack, both give up chances at the other end and both have the personnel to cause problems going forward. Marseille getting that first goal is crucial given their home record when they do so, and with Toulouse carrying an attacking threat of their own despite the Donnum absence, backing a high scoring Marseille win looks like the sharpest angle here.
Both sides press aggressively and there is genuine pace in behind on both teams, which tends to produce frustration and late challenges. Expect the referee to be kept busy here, and four or five bookings across the ninety minutes would not be a surprise in a game played at this kind of tempo.
Marseille 3-2 Toulouse. It might look like a bold call but it suits the pattern of this game perfectly. OM have the home advantage, the momentum and the firepower, but Toulouse will not come here and sit deep, and they have the quality to nick a couple even against a side with a strong record on their own patch.
Over 3.5 goals. Marseille are scoring for fun and Toulouse hit the net in every away game this season. The defensive numbers on both sides suggest goals are coming. This feels like a fixture where the under is the far more dangerous bet.
Igor Paixao is the shout here. He scored against Le Havre last week, he operates in dangerous areas on the left and he has the directness to get in behind a Toulouse defence that is not the meanest in this division. He looks lively every time he gets the ball and in a game where Marseille should be pushing from the off, Paixao could be first on the scoresheet.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Marseille to Win |
| Total Goals | Over 3.5 Goals |
| First Goalscorer | Igor Paixao |
Marseille winning in a high scoring game with Paixao on the scoresheet fits the attacking profile of both sides and the patterns we have seen from OM at home this season.
Marseille have too much going for them here to back against. The home record against Toulouse, the winning run, the first goal advantage they hold at Stade Velodrome, it all points in one direction. Genesio’s side are not a finished article defensively but they have enough going forward to outscore Toulouse even if Askou’s men find the net themselves.
Toulouse will make this uncomfortable at times because that is simply what they do on the road, but Marseille’s overall quality and home advantage should be enough to carry them through. We are backing Marseille 3-2 in what should be a proper Friday night spectacle at Stade Velodrome.
