Who do you think will win?

There is an interesting question hanging over this one. Olympiacos are a side in genuine transition, with a new manager barely a week into the job and a Europa League opener arriving at the worst possible moment. Can Jagiellonia Bialystok take advantage of a host that looks uncertain of itself right now, or does the Karaiskakis atmosphere and the sheer difference in squad quality tell in the end? That is exactly what this preview is going to dig into.

Olympiacos vs Jagiellonia Bialystok Match Details

This is the opening fixture of the 2026/27 Europa League league phase, with Olympiacos welcoming the Polish side to the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus. It is a competition debut in this format for Jagiellonia, who have only recently graduated from the Conference League, while Olympiacos are no strangers to European nights at this ground, even if the current mood around the club is far from settled.

Team News

Imanol Alguacil has got a real selection headache for his European bow, and it is not just tactical. He is working with a trimmed squad that has had almost no time to absorb his ideas, and the absentee list is not helping.

  • Ayoub El Kaabi is out with a broken cheekbone, a significant blow given he is the kind of striker who can change a European tie on his own
  • Joel Roca is nursing a shoulder injury and will not feature
  • Konstantinos Fortounis is suspended, which removes an experienced head from midfield
  • A further group of players are unavailable for selection, though the squad still has recognisable quality in key positions
  • Jagiellonia have just the one confirmed absentee, with Ousmane Sow missing through a muscle injury
  • Adrian Siemieniec is otherwise close to full strength but may shuffle his pack after a chastening 2-0 defeat at Wisla Krakow

Predicted Lineups

Alguacil used a 4-2-3-1 in his first match in charge, and with Fortounis suspended and El Kaabi out, his options up top are limited. Jota Silva, the former Nottingham Forest forward, should lead the line again, with Stefan Ortega, who came through Manchester City, keeping goal. The shape is likely to be the same, with Freuler offering experience in the double pivot.

Olympiacos: Ortega; Holmgren Pedersen, Retsos, Pirola, Tiknizyan; Puerta, Freuler; Gonzalez, Chiquinho, Fortounis; Silva. For Jagiellonia, Siemieniec is likely to keep faith with most of the defensive structure that featured at Wisla, with Abramowicz in goal and a back four of Wojtuszek, Vital, Konstantopoulos and Wdowik. Klynge and Romanczuk should anchor midfield, with Imaz operating behind the front three of Agbonifo, Prelec and Szmyt.

Recent Form

Olympiacos have had a strange start to the season by any measure. They opened the Greek Super League with back to back 1-0 wins over Atromitos and Asteras Tripolis, looked briefly like a side finding its feet, then drew 1-1 with Volos before a 1-0 home defeat to OFI Crete on Saturday. That last result is the one that stings because it came under Alguacil, a man who had barely had 48 hours to organise a training session let alone install a tactical identity. They also went through a 4-0 Greek Cup win over Larissa and a 3-2 cup victory over Volos, so there are goals in this squad. But the consistency is nowhere near where you would want it ahead of a European opener.

Context is everything with Olympiacos right now. Mendilibar was not just sacked after a bad run of results, he was the man who delivered their first European trophy and then a domestic double. Getting rid of him after seven games is a statement of intent from the new football operations structure, but it has created genuine instability at the worst possible time. Alguacil is a quality appointment on paper, a man who built Real Sociedad into a genuine Europa League force, but he has had no runway here whatsoever.

Jagiellonia are not in great domestic form either, it has to be said. They beat Slask Wroclaw 2-1 but lost 2-1 at Lech Poznan and were beaten 2-0 at Wisla Krakow just before travelling here. That is three defeats in their last four league outings, which raises serious questions about their defensive resilience on the road. In European competition it is a different story. They knocked Rangers out 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifying playoffs, which is an impressive scalp by any standard, and then dismantled Iberia 1999 6-1 across two legs. They have earned their place in this league phase, but the domestic wobble is a concern.

Head-to-Head Record

These two sides have never met in a competitive fixture, so there is no meaningful head to head to lean on. The only time they have shared a pitch was a friendly in 2019 that Olympiacos won 5-0, which tells you roughly nothing about what happens here. Olympiacos have faced Polish opposition in Europe before, losing over two legs to Gornik Zabrze back in the 1987/88 season, though that is so far back it carries little analytical weight. Jagiellonia have played in Greece before, drawing away at Aris in the 2010/11 Europa League qualifying rounds without managing a win across either leg. So on the evidence available, Greek clubs have the edge on home soil against Polish visitors, though the sample size is tiny.

Key Stats

  • Olympiacos have won only two of their four Super League matches this season, and both of those came in the opening two rounds before the coaching change
  • Jagiellonia have won just once in their last four domestic league fixtures, losing two of those on the road
  • The visitors beat Rangers 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifying playoffs, showing they are capable of producing in European competition when it counts

Olympiacos vs Jagiellonia Bialystok Betting Tips

This is a tricky one to price up neatly because so much of it hinges on how much the Olympiacos chaos affects their performance on the night. On raw quality and home advantage they are clear favourites. But a new manager who has had one match and one defeat, a depleted squad and a crowd that is already feeling the pressure of a poor start makes for unpredictable territory. Jagiellonia are not here to make up the numbers, but they are also struggling for form. My angle is that Olympiacos edge it at home while both sides contribute to the scoresheet.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Both squads have enough attacking quality to make this an open game, and Olympiacos have the firepower even without El Kaabi to cause problems. Jagiellonia showed against Rangers that they can score away from home in Europe. Over 2.5 goals looks the sensible call here.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Olympiacos have looked vulnerable at the back during this early part of the season, and Jagiellonia proved in the qualifying rounds that they carry a genuine attacking threat on the road. With Olympiacos also capable of scoring goals even in their recent mixed form, both teams to score looks a strong yes.

Corners Prediction

Olympiacos will be pushing for control at Karaiskakis and should generate plenty of attacking play down the flanks, while Jagiellonia have shown they are willing to press and counter rather than sit deep. Expect a lively tempo with a reasonable number of set piece situations arising. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable target in a game where both sides will be getting forward regularly.

Correct Score Prediction

The home advantage, the gulf in European experience at club level and the fact that Olympiacos carry serious quality even in a weakened squad all point to a home win, but Jagiellonia will not roll over. A 2-1 to Olympiacos feels like the most natural landing point for this one.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Olympiacos to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Corners Over 9.5

A home win with both sides scoring fits the pattern of a transitional Olympiacos side that creates enough to win but has shown defensive frailties, while the corners market should be well fed by an open, high tempo European night at Karaiskakis.

Final Match Prediction

Olympiacos are the better side on paper and playing at home in front of a crowd that will demand a response after a poor start to the season under Alguacil. The new gaffer needs a result badly, and European nights at Karaiskakis tend to galvanise this squad in a way that league games sometimes do not. The atmosphere alone should give them a lift that they have not had in recent weeks.

Jagiellonia are a decent side and they absolutely should not be written off, particularly given what they did to Rangers in the playoff rounds. But their domestic form is shaky, they are travelling away from home in European competition against a side with significantly more individual quality across the pitch, and they have a habit of conceding on their travels. Olympiacos to take this one 2-1, with Jagiellonia making them work for it.
