PSV Eindhoven
Club BruggeEight games on the spin. That is the number Club Brugge arrive with at Philips Stadion, a run that includes beating Inter Milan 4-3 at San Siro and putting three past Lens without reply. When you consider that sequence sits alongside a PSV side that has wobbled badly in recent weeks, losing three of four matches before a bounce back thrashing of the Eredivisie’s bottom club, you start to see why this fixture feels like it has an upset written all over it.
PSV got themselves back on the scoresheet in Porto, grinding out a 1-0 win to stop the bleeding and collect their first Champions League clean sheet in nearly a year. But there is a difference between nicking a result at the Estadio do Dragao and putting in a performance that genuinely signals you are back. Peter Bosz will know that better than anyone.
This is matchday four of the Champions League league phase, and the action takes place at Philips Stadion in Eindhoven. PSV are currently 18th in the league phase standings while Club Brugge sit in 11th, seven places and a significant chunk of momentum ahead of their Dutch hosts. For PSV this is a genuine six pointer in terms of their hopes of advancing. For Brugge, a win here could push them into the coveted top eight and automatic progression territory.
PSV have a few selection headaches to navigate before Bosz names his side. The squad is not at full strength and there are some meaningful absences to factor in.
Club Brugge travel in considerably better shape. Ivan Leko is missing Joel Ordonez, who has not featured since Ecuador’s involvement at the 2026 World Cup ended, but beyond that the squad looks healthy. Nicolo Tresoldi in particular will be full of confidence after bagging four of Brugge’s nine Champions League goals so far this campaign.
Bosz looks set to go with Kovar in goal behind a back four of Dest, Geertruida, Obispo and Kostic. Sano and Junior will likely sit in midfield, with Perisic, Til and Van Bommel operating in the half spaces behind Mijnans leading the line. The big question is whether Wanner and Lammers are passed fit, and whether Bosz rolls the dice by including either of them or sticks with what he knows.
Leko should name a strong side with Sommer in goal, a back four of Sabbe, Spileers, Mechele and Seys, Potts and Vanaken in the engine room, and a front three of Forbs, Vetlesen and Virgili supporting Tresoldi at the top. Brugge have found a system that works and there is no reason for Leko to tinker with it at all.
PSV’s inconsistency over the past couple of months has been a real concern. After going seven straight without defeat across all competitions, the wheels came off at FC Twente and the Eredivisie leaders suddenly looked very shakeable. In the four matches before last weekend’s demolition of Willem II, Bosz’s side failed to score more than once on four separate occasions. For a team chasing a fourth straight Eredivisie title and trying to make an impression in Europe, that kind of attacking bluntness is alarming. The 7-0 win over the bottom club was welcome but you cannot read too much into it. Willem II are in serious trouble and anyone near the top of that division should be putting that number past them.
Club Brugge, by contrast, have been genuinely excellent. Eight wins in a row domestically and in Europe, and not just grinding out results either. They have beaten Inter in their own backyard, beaten Genk three nil, beaten Lens three nil, and shown they can also nick a tight one when they need to. That kind of versatility, knowing how to win ugly as well as win brilliantly, is the hallmark of a team with real belief in what they are doing. Leko has his side purring right now.
The contrast in form heading into this game could not be much sharper. PSV are looking for a second consecutive Champions League win for the first time since January 2025. Brugge are riding an eight game wave that took them to San Siro and came back with three points. The momentum is very obviously with the visitors.
PSV have a poor record against Belgian opposition in this competition. They lost both group stage meetings with Anderlecht in the 2000-01 season and then fell to Union Saint-Gilloise last campaign. That is three defeats from three against sides from the Belgian Pro League in European competition. The Peasants have not managed to get the better of a Belgian club on the continent yet, and Brugge will be well aware of that.
From the Brugge perspective, away trips to Dutch clubs in European football have not been straightforward either. They drew at Twente in the 1989-90 UEFA Cup and suffered a loss at Ajax in the 2003-04 Champions League. So neither side carries a particularly convincing record in this specific matchup territory, which makes the current form guide even more relevant as a tiebreaker.
The form book points in one clear direction here. Club Brugge are flying, PSV have been inconsistent and are carrying injury worries, and the head to head record against Belgian sides does the hosts no favours either. There is value in backing Brugge to win this, and the way they have been playing, goals at both ends feels very likely too.
This is a Champions League knockout of sorts for PSV and they will need to press hard, which means they will give away fouls. Brugge on the counter could draw several free kicks in dangerous positions. A game with three or four bookings feels about right given the pressure PSV will be under and the discipline questions their recent form has raised under stress.
Yes. PSV found the net at Porto in their last Champions League outing and a home crowd will push them to attack. But Brugge have been scoring freely, with Tresoldi in particular looking sharp in European competition. PSV’s defence has had its wobbles this season, and a Brugge attack in this kind of form will cause problems. Both teams finding the net feels like the most likely outcome here.
PSV at home will be pushing for an equaliser if they fall behind and getting bodies forward, which tends to generate corners. Brugge play on the front foot and force opponents back too. A tally of over nine corners across the ninety minutes looks a fair expectation given both sides’ aggressive approach and the fact PSV will likely be chasing the game at some point.
Over 2.5 goals. Brugge have been involved in high scoring games throughout their recent run, and PSV at home in Europe will not sit back. The San Siro game finished 4-3. The Aston Villa defeat was 3-2. When Brugge are involved, goals tend to follow, and a PSV side with something to prove on home turf will not be looking to keep it tight either.

An away Brugge win in a game with goals at both ends fits perfectly with everything the form book, the head to head record and the injury situation are telling us about this fixture.
Peter Bosz needs a result here to keep PSV’s Champions League ambitions alive, but the evidence of recent weeks suggests his side are not quite ready to step up against elite level opposition. The thrashing of Willem II is a nice confidence boost but it is a very different proposition to handling a Brugge side with eight straight wins behind them and Tresoldi running hot in front of goal.
Leko’s men have shown they know how to win in big European atmospheres this season and Philips Stadion, for all its noise, should hold no fears for a squad that went to the San Siro and came away with three points. PSV will nick one, this feels like a game that will not be quiet, but Brugge will have too much and take all three points. PSV Eindhoven 1-2 Club Brugge.
