Who do you think will win?

Six meetings. Thirty goals. An average of five per game. If that one statistic does not get you interested in Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture between RB Leipzig and Manchester City, nothing will. These two sides have form for producing absolute chaos when they meet, and with City currently leaking goals at an alarming rate and Leipzig quietly building momentum under a familiar face in the dugout, the ingredients are there for another wild one at the Red Bull Arena.

City arrive in Germany under a bit of pressure. Back to back Premier League defeats have cost Enzo Maresca’s side top spot in the table, and while their Champions League campaign has been ticking along reasonably enough, there is a nagging sense that this team is not yet firing on all cylinders. Leipzig, meanwhile, are scrapping for points in the League Phase but showed last weekend that they can compete domestically. The subplot involving their head coach makes this one just that little bit more interesting too.

RB Leipzig vs Manchester City Match Details

This Champions League League Phase fixture takes place at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany. City come into this one sitting 10th in the 36 team standings with six points from three games, while Leipzig are down in 29th place having collected just three points from their opening three matches. Both clubs need a result, though for very different reasons.

Team News

Neither side is dealing with a lengthy injury list, but there are a few notable absences and selection questions worth flagging before we get into it.

  • Assan Ouedraogo is out for Leipzig with a shoulder injury.
  • Marc Guiu remains sidelined with a muscle problem.
  • Maxime Esteve is doubtful after picking up a knock that kept him out of the Schalke win.
  • Christopher Nkunku was an unused substitute last weekend and his availability to start is uncertain.
  • For City, Antoine Semenyo is the only confirmed absentee, with a knee injury expected to keep him out until mid December.

Predicted Lineups

Martin Demichelis looks set to go with Antonio Nusa on the left side of his front three, with Brajan Gruda and Romulo Cardoso alongside him. Christoph Baumgartner could come into central midfield if he shakes off his fitness concerns, potentially at the expense of Rocco Reitz. The backline should see Castello Lukeba and Willi Orban as the central pairing with David Raum at left back.

Maresca has a few calls to make. Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden are both pushing for starts after Foden’s hat trick against AEK Athens, which likely means at least one of Ayyoub Bouaddi, Enzo Fernandez or Elliot Anderson drops out. Marc Guehi is pressing for a centre back spot alongside Ruben Dias, and Nico O’Reilly could come in at left back ahead of Josko Gvardiol. Erling Haaland starts. There is no debate about that one.

Recent Form

City’s form has been a strange mix of the brilliant and the baffling. They knocked Brighton out of the EFL Cup on penalties, then turned around and lost 1 0 to the same Brighton side in the Premier League just days later. It was the third time this season they have conceded inside the opening 15 minutes, which tells you something about their defensive alertness in the early stages of matches. Twelve goals conceded in their last six games is not a number that sits comfortably for a club with City’s resources and ambition.

In Europe, they have been more convincing in patches. A 4-2 defeat to PSG at the Etihad was sandwiched between clean sheet wins over Porto and a heavily rotated AEK Athens. The concern is that the defensive frailties are becoming a pattern rather than a blip. City have won only eight of their last 20 Champions League matches, which is a stat that would have seemed almost laughable a couple of seasons ago.

Leipzig are in a better place domestically than their European form suggests. They sit fourth in the Bundesliga, just three points behind an unbeaten Bayern Munich, and Demichelis has won eight of his 13 games in charge since taking over in June. That 4-1 thumping at Real Madrid in Europe looks harsh in isolation, but combined with another 4-1 loss away at Como in the same competition, you have to question how they cope when facing top level opposition and pressed high. Three points from three League Phase games leaves them in a tough spot and they need wins badly.

Head-to-Head Record

The history between these two clubs is relatively short but utterly compelling. City have come out on top in four of their previous six meetings, with one draw and one defeat. That defeat came in the 2021-22 group stage when Leipzig won 2-1 at home, which happens to be the last time they beat City in any competition. Since then it has been one way traffic in City’s favour, most memorably that extraordinary comeback at the Etihad in November 2023 when City trailed 2-0 at half time before winning 3-2.

The goals record is the thing that stands out above everything else. Thirty goals across six games is genuinely remarkable and it speaks to the open, attacking nature of how these two sides tend to set up against each other. Gvardiol scored for Leipzig against City in their last 16 first leg in 2022-23, before City won the second leg 7-0 with Haaland scoring five. Leipzig have also lost their last five UEFA games against English opposition, which is a stat that will not be lost on Maresca’s coaching staff.

Key Stats

  • Erling Haaland has scored 12 goals against Leipzig in eight appearances, more than against any other opponent in his career.
  • The previous six meetings between these two clubs have produced 30 goals, averaging five per game.
  • Leipzig have lost their last five UEFA matches against English opposition.

RB Leipzig vs Manchester City Betting Tips

The head to head record between these two clubs is essentially screaming at you to expect goals, and the current form of both sides does nothing to make you think this fixture will suddenly turn into a cagey 0-0. City are vulnerable at the back but carrying serious firepower up front, while Leipzig have shown they can score but also that they can be torn apart by elite sides. The betting angles here feel fairly clear to me.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Erling Haaland is the obvious call and the stats back it up completely. Twelve goals in eight games against this specific opponent makes him almost impossible to look past. He will be licking his lips in the dressing room before this one and you would back him to open the scoring at a generous enough price given what he has done against Leipzig throughout his career.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 3.5 goals. Six games averaging five goals apiece is not a coincidence, it is a pattern. City’s defence is porous right now and Leipzig, playing at home in front of their own crowd in a must win European fixture, will go for it. Add Haaland into the equation and you have a game that is almost built for goals.

Correct Score Prediction

Leipzig 2-4 Manchester City. City have the quality to outscore the hosts even on an off night, but Leipzig are good enough at home to get a couple of their own. If City’s backline has another shaky start, we could be in for a first half that sets up a frantic second. A high scoring City win feels right here.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards. This is a high intensity European night at the Red Bull Arena with both sides having points to prove. Leipzig will need to press and foul to stay in the game, and City’s quick technical players tend to draw fouls. A match like this, with the stakes both clubs are playing for, usually produces a fair few bookings.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, and it is not a particularly difficult call. City have conceded in their last six matches, and Leipzig scored last time out at home against PSV. With Nkunku potentially available and Nusa in decent form, Leipzig have enough going forward to trouble City’s back four, especially given how many early goals City have been conceding this season.

Corners Prediction

Over 9.5 corners. City love to play through the thirds and win corners through their wide players, and Leipzig press high which tends to create plenty of blocked attacks and set piece situations in both directions. An open, attacking game between two technically minded sides should generate corners at a healthy rate throughout.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Erling Haaland
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Goals Over 3.5

Haaland’s record against Leipzig is extraordinary, and combining his first goalscorer odds with BTTS and over 3.5 goals reflects exactly what the head to head history and current form of both sides is pointing towards.

Final Match Prediction

This has all the makings of a proper Champions League evening. Demichelis facing his old club, Haaland against the side he torments more than any other, and two teams with a combined recent record of conceding goals at will. City have enough quality in the final third to win this game even when they are not at their sharpest, and Leipzig’s poor record against English clubs in European competition is a red flag you cannot ignore.

That said, do not expect a comfortable evening for City’s back four. Leipzig will fancy their chances of getting on the scoresheet and the atmosphere at the Red Bull Arena will give them a lift. Back City to take the points in a match that produces plenty of entertainment, but do not expect a clean sheet at either end. RB Leipzig 2-4 Manchester City.
