Who do you think will win?

Russia have been building quietly in the background while the rest of the world has carried on without them. Four straight wins, each one featuring at least two goals, and a 6-0 battering of Namibia in their most recent outing that had six different scorers on the sheet. That is not a side going through the motions in friendlies. That is a squad with genuine momentum and a manager who has found a way to keep his players sharp and hungry despite the competitive vacuum they have been operating in since 2022. Nigeria, by contrast, arrive at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium carrying the weight of a 3-0 humiliation against Guinea-Bissau and without nine of their preferred starters. The contrast in circumstances heading into this one could not be much sharper.

Eric Chelle is under real pressure. His Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a comeback win over Madagascar, which felt promising, but the performance in Bissau unravelled that goodwill quickly. Only one team goes through from the group, and Nigeria look shakier than anyone expected. This friendly gives Chelle a chance to blood some fringe players and try to restore some confidence, but he is doing it against a host nation that is flying and desperate to prove a point on home soil.

Russia vs Nigeria Match Details

This friendly fixture takes place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, a venue that hosted several games during the 2018 World Cup and carries a proper international atmosphere. Russia cannot compete in UEFA or FIFA sanctioned competitions due to their ongoing suspension following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, so these friendly arrangements are the only football Valery Karpin and his squad have to work with. They have made the most of it.

Team News

Nigeria have been hit hard by withdrawals ahead of this one, and Chelle is having to shuffle his deck significantly. Russia, meanwhile, head in from a position of relative stability after a dominant display in their last outing.

  • Wilfred Ndidi has withdrawn from the Nigeria squad through injury
  • Victory Akpe, called up as Ndidi’s replacement, has also pulled out after picking up an injury in training
  • Bright Osayi-Samuel is the third player to withdraw, with Rostov’s Ibraheem Mahfus Ajasa brought in late as cover
  • Ola Aina, Bruno Onyemaechi, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen are all absent from the travelling squad
  • Vince Osuji of Tromso and 19 year old Stade Reims midfielder John Otomewo are among the fresh faces called in to fill gaps
  • Kelechi Iheanacho is available and will be keen to transfer his club form onto the international stage
  • Russia have no notable injury concerns flagged and Karpin is expected to name a strong side

Predicted Lineups

Karpin has little reason to tinker after a 6-0 win and should name much the same side that has carried Russia through their recent run of form. Stanislav Agkatsev looks set to continue in goal, with Arsen Adamov, Viktor Melekhin, Osipenko and Mingiyan Beveev in front of him. Artem Karpukas is likely to feature in midfield, with Anton Miranchuk adding quality in the advanced areas. Konstantin Tyukavin impressed against Iran and should get a start up front after coming off the bench against Namibia.

Nigeria’s likely shape will be shaped more by availability than preference. Christopher Nwabali should start in goal. Tariqe Fosu-Henry James, Fernandez, Benjamin and Igboke are expected to form the back four, with Chibuzo Nwoko and Raphael Onyedika likely to anchor the middle of the park. Moses Simon should operate in the forward areas alongside Akor Adams and Iheanacho, who will carry most of Nigeria’s attacking responsibility on the night.

Recent Form

Russia’s recent record reads like a side that has found its groove. Four consecutive wins, with the goals flowing freely in each one. The 2-0 victory over Iran in Kazan saw Aleksandr Golovin score twice in the opening half, which suggested real quality at the top end of the pitch, and then the Namibia match produced something close to a statement performance. Six goals, six different scorers, and a clean sheet. The only blot on their recent copybook is a narrow 1-0 loss to Egypt back in May, and even that was a tight result rather than a heavy defeat. This is a squad that knows how to win football matches even without the pressure of competitive stakes to sharpen them.

Nigeria’s situation looks considerably more fragile. The 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau was a damaging result in every sense, both for their AFCON qualifying position and for the atmosphere around the squad. The manner of the defeat, going down by three goals without reply, raised questions about defensive organisation and mentality. Before that, they had beaten Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo after coming from behind, which showed some character, but the Guinea-Bissau performance felt like a step backwards. A 2-1 loss to Portugal in June, with Akor Adams getting the lone goal for the Eagles, completes a picture of a side that is inconsistent and prone to poor results against better organised opposition.

The momentum gap between these two teams is significant. Russia feel settled, confident and dangerous going forward. Nigeria feel unsettled, understrength and low on confidence. That context matters enormously in a fixture like this.

Head-to-Head Record

These two sides have only faced each other once before, a 1-1 friendly draw in June 2025. Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net to give Russia the lead, before Tolu Arokodare grabbed his first international goal to level things up. Russia dominated possession throughout, holding 57% of the ball across the ninety minutes, but neither side could find a winner. It was a game that felt fairly even on the surface, though Russia’s ability to control the ball was a notable theme.

With only one meeting to draw on, historical patterns between these nations are limited. What we do know is that Russia were the more comfortable side in that first encounter even in a draw, and they are significantly stronger in terms of confidence and preparation heading into this rematch.

Key Stats

  • Russia have scored at least two goals in each of their last four matches, including six against Namibia and two against Iran
  • Nigeria are without nine of their preferred starters for this fixture, including Osimhen, Lookman, Chukwueze, Iwobi and Bassey
  • The only previous meeting between these sides ended 1-1, with Russia enjoying a clear dominance of possession at 57%

Russia vs Nigeria Betting Tips

Russia look like the value pick across most markets here. They are the stronger, better organised side at this moment, playing at home in front of their own supporters, and coming up against a Nigeria squad that has been weakened significantly by withdrawals and is low on confidence after a heavy defeat. The fringe players in Chelle’s squad will be motivated to impress, but motivation alone does not win football matches against a side that has just put six past Namibia. The goals markets look particularly interesting given Russia’s recent habit of scoring freely, and there is a case for Nigeria nicking something on the counter given the individual quality they carry even in this depleted setup.

Corners Prediction

Russia tend to control the ball and push forward in numbers, which naturally drives up the corner count at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. With Nigeria likely to sit compact and absorb pressure for long spells, expect Russia to win a healthy number of set pieces from wide areas as they try to break the Super Eagles down. Over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable proposition for this one.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Konstantin Tyukavin is the pick here. The forward showed his quality with a strong showing against Iran and has the confidence of a striker in form right now. Russia will create chances, and Tyukavin looks well placed to get on the end of one early in the game against a Nigeria backline that is not at full strength.

Correct Score Prediction

Russia to win 2-1 feels about right. The hosts have the quality and the confidence to take the lead and push for more, but Nigeria carry enough individual threat on the break to grab a consolation. It mirrors something close to the pattern of their last meeting, just with the outcome flipped in Russia’s favour this time around.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals looks the smart call. Russia have cleared that bar comfortably in each of their last four matches, and even in a competitive qualifier Nigeria found the net against Madagascar from a losing position. A depleted Super Eagles squad against an attacking Russian side in confident form sets up nicely for three or more goals across the ninety minutes.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Russia to Win
Over and Under Goals Over 2.5 Goals
First Goalscorer Konstantin Tyukavin

Russia’s home advantage, current form and Nigeria’s absences make this a logical combination, with Tyukavin the most likely outlet for the opening goal in a game that should see the hosts win and goals flow at both ends.

Final Match Prediction

Russia to win 2-1. Karpin’s side have earned the right to go into this one as clear favourites, and a Nigeria squad missing nine regulars and carrying the hangover of a 3-0 defeat simply does not have the defensive solidity to keep a free-scoring Russia team at bay for ninety minutes. The hosts should take control of the game through midfield, create the better chances and convert enough of them to see it out comfortably.

Nigeria will not roll over entirely. The fringe players will want to make an impression on Chelle, and the Super Eagles have the pace and the individual quality to threaten on the transition. A goal back at some point feels likely, but Russia should have enough to close out a win that extends their impressive unbeaten run and keeps the pressure squarely on Chelle to find answers before the November qualifiers arrive.
