The Champions League is back under the lights in North London. Tottenham – starting life in Europe with Thomas Frank – host Villarreal in what looks like a cracking Group Stage clash. Spurs are unbeaten in six of their last seven European home games, while Villarreal head to London fresh off leading La Liga in goals scored before the international break.
So, will Spurs get Frank’s European campaign off to a flyer, or can Villarreal spring another away shock? Let’s break it down.
Spurs have a few selection questions. Micky van de Ven should return at centre-back after shaking off a knock, while Cristian Romero is expected to partner him. Rodrigo Bentancur has trained but might not be risked from the start. Up front, Richarlison has competition from Brennan Johnson, but expect James Maddison to pull the strings behind Son Heung-min.
Villarreal also have issues. Gerard Moreno is fit again and gives them a huge boost in attack. Alexander Sørloth is likely to partner him after a strong start to the season. In midfield, Dani Parejo keeps things ticking, though Étienne Capoue is carrying a minor knock. The bad news? Juan Foyth (elbow) remains sidelined, so Villarreal’s defence could be tested.
