Midweek cup nights under the lights don’t get much better than this. Wolves welcome Chelsea to Molineux in the Carabao Cup, and it’s shaping up to be an intriguing clash between two sides heading in very different directions.
Wolves have looked lively in the cup this season and will fancy their chances at home, while Chelsea — fresh off a huge Champions League win — are still juggling form and fitness across competitions.
Wolves have a few injury doubts heading into this one. Ki-Jana Hoever (knee), Matt Doherty (wrist), and Toti Gomes (illness) are all questionable. That might force Vitor Pereira into some rotation at the back, but their recent Carabao Cup form gives them confidence — they’ve beaten both Everton and West Ham at home, scoring five goals in those two games.
Chelsea have far more to manage on the medical front. Cole Palmer (groin), Levi Colwill (cruciate ligament), Liam Delap (hamstring), and Benoît Badiashile (muscle) are out, while Dário Essugo (surgery) and Enzo Fernández (knee) remain doubtful. It means Enzo Maresca may again need to turn to younger faces, just as he did in the Champions League win over Ajax.
It’s been a mixed bag for Wolves lately. Their Carabao Cup form has been excellent, but their Premier League struggles continued last weekend in a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland. They started slowly, conceding early to Nordi Mukiele’s clever finish, and a late own goal from Ladislav Krejci sealed their sixth league loss of the season.
Wolves pushed hard in the second half but couldn’t find a breakthrough — a sign of their growing frustration in front of goal. Jørgen Strand Larsen worked tirelessly but failed to register a shot on target, while their 31 crosses into the box produced little. That lack of cutting edge is something they’ll be desperate to fix at Molineux.
Still, in the Carabao Cup, they’ve looked a different side — more confident, more fluid, and much more dangerous going forward. If that version of Wolves shows up again, Chelsea could be in for a fight.
Chelsea, on the other hand, come into this one off the back of a dominant 5-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League. It was one of their most complete performances under Maresca. Enzo Fernández featured in the first half before being substituted as Chelsea turned the second period into something of a training exercise.
Young forward Guiu made history as the club’s youngest Champions League goalscorer — only for teammate Estevão to break that record later in the same game. Tyrique George added a fifth early in the second half, and it was all smiles for the Blues as they cruised through the final whistle.
That result gave Chelsea’s youngsters a big confidence boost, though facing a gritty Wolves side away from home will be a very different challenge.
Wolverhampton Wanderers (4-3-3):
Johnstone (GK); Doherty, S. Bueno, Krejci, H. Bueno; Munetsi, André, Bellegarde; Arias, Larsen, Hwang
Chelsea (4-2-3-1):
Jørgensen (GK); Gusto, Chalobah, Fofana, Hato; Fernández, Santos; Neto, Buonanotte, Garnacho; Guiu
Wolves’ home record in the Carabao Cup can’t be ignored. They’ve looked comfortable and confident in front of their own fans. Chelsea have the better technical quality, but missing key players like Palmer and Colwill may leave them vulnerable.
Chelsea’s young guns have impressed in Europe, but Molineux is a far tougher place to go on a cold October night. Wolves’ intensity, energy, and crowd support might just be enough to swing it.
Match Prediction: Wolves to win. Bet with bet365.
Wolves 2-1 feels about right. Chelsea will create chances but may lack the composure to finish them. Expect Wolves to strike first, Chelsea to respond, and the home side to edge it late on — maybe through a set piece or counterattack.
Correct Score Prediction: Wolves 2-1 Chelsea. Bet with bet365.
Under 3.5 Goals: It’s likely to stay competitive without turning into a goal fest.
Over 2.5 Goals: Both sides can score, and Wolves’ recent matches tend to open up in the second half.
Over/Under Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals. Bet with bet365.
