In an interview exclusively arranged by WhichBookie, former Manchester United and England defender Wes Brown shared his thoughts on the club’s recent transfer moves and what’s still missing from the current squad.
Brown, who famously lifted the Champions League and Premier League during United’s historic treble-winning season, praised the additions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but was quick to point out that the team still lacks a true out-and-out striker to support Rasmus Højlund.
“I think Mbeumo has done it to a degree, but for me, both he and Cunha are more natural in deeper roles,” Brown told us. “They’re players who like to get on the ball, create, and make things happen – rather than lead the line in the traditional number nine sense.”
While Brown is excited about the creativity the duo can bring, he believes United’s front line is still short of options.
“You have to take opportunities to sign quality players when they become available – and that’s clearly what the manager has done here. But we’re still short. Rasmus has been under huge pressure, and I don’t think it’s fair to expect him to carry the attack alone. Manchester United should always have more than one proper striker.”
The former centre-back also believes Rúben Amorim now has enough quality at the back to build a strong foundation for the season ahead — if injuries don’t derail things.
“Defensively, if everyone stays fit, I think we’re in decent shape,” he added. “But up front, it still feels like something is missing.”
Wes Brown also spoke candidly about Marcus Rashford’s recent loan move to FC Barcelona, which includes a £30 million option to buy. The 26-year-old made an instant impact during his debut in a pre-season win over Vissel Kobe, and Brown feels the change of scenery could be exactly what Rashford needs.
“It’s clear that things between Marcus and the manager weren’t working,” he said. “A loan was the right move for both parties. And let’s be honest – if you’re going to go anywhere, Barcelona isn’t a bad choice.”
“He’s still got a lot to give. For United, I just hope we don’t end up regretting it, because Rashford has always been a special talent. But at the same time, things don’t always go to plan in football.”
When asked who he rates most highly among United’s centre-back options, Brown named young star Leny Yoro as the standout.
“I really like Yoro – calm, composed, good on the ball. He reminds me a little bit of Rio [Ferdinand],” said Brown. “He’s probably my favourite at the moment. That said, there’s strength in depth with guys like De Ligt, Martinez and even Harry [Maguire], who brings experience.”
“What the manager needs to work out is chemistry – who plays best together, not just who has the biggest name. That’s how you build a great defence.”
Finally, Brown tipped Amad Diallo to become a key figure for United this season, provided he can stay fit.
“He was electric last year before the injury,” Brown said. “If he’s sharp and focused, he gives us that spark we’ve been missing. I’d love to see him continue in an attacking role. He’s dangerous – and we need that.”
