There are few things in football more dangerous than a wounded team with something to prove. Derby County limp into this one having just been beaten at home by a West Brom side who had ten men for most of the match. That is the sort of result that stays with a dressing room, the sort that gets replayed in the manager’s head at 3am. John Eustace knows his side desperately need a response, and they need it in front of their own supporters on Saturday afternoon.

Birmingham City arrive at Pride Park carrying their own frustrations from midweek. Chris Davies is convinced his side were robbed at Norwich, and looking at the footage of Liam Millar’s disallowed goal, he has a case. But bitterness about refereeing decisions does not earn you points, and Blues know a win here would send a real statement of intent about their promotion credentials. Two clubs, two very different kinds of hurt, and a Midlands derby with genuine stakes on both sides of the pitch.

Derby County vs Birmingham City Match Details

Derby County host Birmingham City at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday the 12th of September 2026. Kickoff is at 12:30pm and the match is part of the English Football League Championship. It is an early afternoon kick in the East Midlands, which should generate a decent atmosphere from a home crowd that will be expecting their side to answer some serious questions.

Team News

Derby are in a difficult spot in terms of their attacking options. Patrick Agyemang has been absent for a while and his goals have been sorely missed, and now Carlton Morris has picked up a muscle injury that rules him out of this one too. John Eustace is running low on firepower up front.

  • Patrick Agyemang (Derby) out injured
  • Carlton Morris (Derby) out with a muscle injury confirmed by Eustace after Wednesday’s game
  • Derby reliant on Sammie Szmodics, Lars Jorgen Salvesen and Henrik Meister to provide goals
  • Patrick Roberts (Birmingham) doubt for Saturday with a knock picked up at Norwich
  • Jhon Solis (Birmingham) unlikely to feature at Pride Park
  • Alex Cochrane expected to return to the Birmingham starting lineup after being rested in midweek, with Kristoffer Lund dropping out

Predicted Lineups

Eustace looks set to go with Szmodics as the focal point of his attack, which tells you everything about how stretched Derby are right now. The Rams will likely line up with Zetterstrom in goal, a back four of Ward, Cashin, Langas and Taylor, with Mowatt and Ozoh sitting in the middle. Blackett Taylor, Clark and Fuseini should provide the creative legs behind Szmodics, with Eustace hoping that combination can unlock what has been a pretty stubborn Blues defence.

Davies is expected to restore Cochrane at left back after resting him at Carrow Road, slotting back into a shape built around Beadle, Laird, Neumann, Klarer and Cochrane across the back. Paik and Iwata should anchor the midfield, with Vicente, Stansfield and Millar offering movement ahead of them and Priske leading the line. Roberts is a concern and his absence would be felt, because Birmingham looked considerably less fluid going forward without him at Norwich.

Recent Form

Derby County’s season has been a real grind so far. One win from seven competitive matches is not the start anyone connected with the club wanted, and the damage to the table has been significant. The Rams have already lost three of their opening four home games at Pride Park this season, which is alarming for a side that needs to make their ground a fortress if they are going to climb the table. The defeat to West Brom on Wednesday was particularly demoralising given that the visitors played the bulk of the game with ten men. When you cannot break down a reduced side at home, there are deep structural problems to address.

The goals column tells the story as clearly as anything. Five goals in six Championship matches places Derby among the least threatening attacks in the division. Only Lincoln City have scored fewer. Without Agyemang’s movement and finishing ability, Eustace’s side look blunt and predictable. Szmodics is a quality player but he is being asked to carry too much of the burden, and defences have clearly worked out that if you deal with him, you have largely dealt with Derby.

Birmingham arrive in a more confident state overall, even if Wednesday stung them. Three consecutive wins over Norwich before that defeat showed real momentum, and Davies has his side playing with an attacking intent that was missing for stretches of last season. The away form in particular has improved markedly. Wins at Swansea and Wrexham earlier in the campaign suggest Blues are far more competitive on the road than they were in 2025/26, when trips away from St Andrew’s were often underwhelming affairs. The loss at Norwich felt like a blip rather than a pattern.

Head-to-Head Record

Derby’s record against Birmingham at Pride Park over the past six years or so gives the home side a modest reason for encouragement. Looking at their last twelve Championship home meetings with Blues, Derby have won six and lost just two, which is a decent return against a direct rival. If you are looking for a reason to back the Rams here, that historical edge at home in this specific fixture is probably the strongest argument available.

Last season’s meeting at Pride Park was one to forget for Blues though, for entirely different reasons. Davies abandoned his usual system and fielded a back five, the move backfired badly, and Birmingham lost without registering a single shot on target. That is the kind of away performance that gets referenced in pre match meetings as a lesson in what not to do. Davies has clearly taken it on board, because his side look considerably more organised and purposeful on the road this time around.

Key Stats

  • Derby have scored just five Championship goals in six matches, the second lowest total in the division behind Lincoln City
  • The Rams have lost three of their first four home games at Pride Park in 2026/27, leaving them 22nd in the table
  • Derby have won six and lost just two of their last twelve Championship home matches against Birmingham

Derby County vs Birmingham City Betting Tips

The story of this match is essentially Derby’s attacking limitations against a Birmingham side that should have enough quality to nick something from a ground that has not been particularly happy this season. Both teams are operating with injury concerns in key areas, the referee will have a fractious Midlands crowd to manage, and the tactical battle between two pragmatic managers should keep this tight. Here is how the markets look to us.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

BTTS yes carries some appeal here. Derby are porous at the back and Birmingham have shown they can hurt teams on the road this season. Even with Derby so short of firepower, they tend to create something in home games and Szmodics is capable of a moment of quality. Back both teams to find the net.

Over & Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals looks the stronger play. Derby’s attacking record is one of the worst in the division right now, and Birmingham are a well organised unit that do not concede cheaply. Neither manager will want to lose this game, which tends to produce cautious, grinding football. A low scoring affair feels most likely.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1-1 draw feels like the most natural landing point for this one. Derby will get enough from the home crowd to nick a goal, possibly from Szmodics, but Birmingham have the quality and composure to find an equaliser and head back across the Midlands with a point. That outcome would satisfy no one completely, which in Midlands derby terms is almost a tradition.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Sammie Szmodics is the obvious shout for Derby in the circumstances. With Morris and Agyemang both missing, the creative responsibility falls heavily on his shoulders and he is a player who genuinely thrives under that kind of pressure. He has a nose for a goal and will be desperate to respond after Wednesday’s blank. He is worth backing to open the scoring.

Corners Prediction

Over 9.5 corners looks reasonable. Derby will be pushing men forward at Pride Park trying to break the deadlock, and Birmingham will be looking to hit on the counter. Both approaches tend to generate corner counts, and the tactical dynamic of a home side chasing the game for spells suits a higher corners total.

Cards Prediction

A Midlands derby with both sets of players carrying a point to prove and a crowd that will be up for the contest from the first whistle. There will be edge to this one. Expect at least three bookings across the ninety minutes as tackles fly in and frustrations bubble over. Over 2.5 cards looks a reasonable shout.

Bet Builder Tip

Combine Szmodics to score anytime, under 2.5 goals and over 9.5 corners for a bet builder that captures the most likely shape of this game. A tight match where Szmodics nicks one at some point, the goals stay low overall, and both sides generate plenty of set piece situations as they probe for a winner.

Final Match Prediction

Derby need a response and their fans will demand one from the first whistle. But this is not a side firing on all cylinders, and Birmingham are good enough to exploit the spaces Eustace’s men leave when they push forward looking for goals. Davies has done enough homework on last season’s Pride Park nightmare to ensure his side are better organised this time.

The 1-1 draw is our call. Derby grab a goal through Szmodics to lift the crowd, Birmingham find a way back through their quality in the final third, and both managers head into the international break with mixed feelings. A fair result in a game that never quite ignites but always means something because of the postcode rivalry involved.
