Bristol City will want to prove they can handle trips to the bigger grounds in this division. Neither team can afford to be soft about it.

Since then though, the Robins have been excellent. They are unbeaten from that low point, have picked up 10 points, and crucially have done it all away from home. Back-to-back wins in Lancashire, at Preston and then at Burnley, show a side that is resilient, adaptable and knows how to close games out. The Burnley win in particular had character written all over it. A goal down with 10 minutes to go, they equalised and then snatched it in the 91st minute. That is a team with belief in what they are doing.
The Robins do come into this one on an unusual run of three consecutive away games, which is never ideal from a preparation and travel standpoint. But given that their away record is the best in the division right now, Skubala will not be losing sleep over that. Both sides carry momentum into Saturday, which is what makes this fixture so compelling.
The head-to-head record leans slightly in Bristol City’s favour over recent meetings. The Robins have not lost to Southampton in their last three encounters, and the Saints have not managed a win against them since November 2023. That is the kind of run that gives a travelling side genuine belief, regardless of where the game is being played. Bristol City clearly feel comfortable against this particular opponent and will arrive at St Mary’s knowing the recent history is on their side.

The gut says Southampton do enough to edge it in front of their own fans, with Larin being the difference. But Bristol City have shown they never know when they are beaten, and this has the look of a match that goes right to the wire. A 2-1 home win is the prediction, though a draw would not be the least bit surprising given the quality and resilience the Robins have shown on their travels this season.
