Le Mans are back in the big time, and they’ve been doing a decent job of reminding everyone they belong here. Three games in, two points on the board, goals being scored, and a home fortress that hasn’t been breached in a long, long time. But there’s a nagging frustration too, because Patrick Videira’s side have been ahead in both of those drawn games and failed to hold on. That’s the story of their season so far: promising, competitive, but not quite over the line. Sunday gives them the chance to change that narrative in front of their own fans.
Lens arrive at Stade Marie Marvingt with a bit of a hangover from what looked like a flying start. The reigning Coupe de France champions and last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up are already stuttering, back to back defeats in the top flight putting a dent in their early confidence. Dino Toppmoller will be keen to arrest the slide, but facing a team that hasn’t lost at home in 16 matches is a proper test of character for a side that’s suddenly looking a bit fragile at the back.
Le Mans host Lens at Stade Marie Marvingt on Sunday 13 September 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 4:15pm. The fixture is part of the Ligue 1 campaign for the 2026/27 season.
Both sides are dealing with some frustrating injury lists heading into Sunday, and the selection headaches are genuine for both gaffers.
For Le Mans, the return of Sidibe at right back gives the side a boost after his enforced absence. Adil Bourabaa should keep his place in midfield after grabbing the goal against Nice, and Videira looks set to go with the same general shape that has given them a platform in the opening weeks.
Le Mans expected lineup: Hatfout; Boisse, Voyer, Torrente; Sidibe, Bourabaa, Lauray, Vercruysse, Calodat; Diallo, Mafouta.
Lens are missing bodies all over the pitch, and Toppmoller will need to patch together a side that can still threaten going forward. Florian Thauvin and Thorgan Hazard are the creative outlets the visiting gaffer will lean on, with Odsonne Edouard leading the line. Despite the injury disruption, Lens still carry serious quality in their forward positions.
Lens expected lineup: Risser; Aguilar, Ganiou, Antonio; Skoras, Bulatovic, Haidara, Mesloub; Thauvin, Hazard; Edouard.
Le Mans have been one of the more interesting stories of the early Ligue 1 season. Promoted sides often come up and get battered in their first few games, but Videira’s men have managed to get something from two of their opening three fixtures and have scored five league goals in the process. The issue is those two points feel hollow when you consider they were winning in both games before letting the lead slip. The mentality of holding on when you’re in front is something they’ll need to develop quickly at this level.
What’s worth highlighting about Le Mans is their home record. They have not been beaten on home soil in 16 consecutive matches across Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and they have kept the opposition to one goal or fewer in nearly all of those games. For a newly promoted team, that defensive solidity at home is remarkable. They’re also chasing something genuinely historic on Sunday, with a win giving them an unbeaten run in their opening four Ligue 1 matches for the first time since the 2007/08 season.
Lens are the side under pressure here, which is a strange thing to say about a team that was competing for the title not so long ago. Three points from three games, back to back single goal defeats, and a defensive record that is already giving up more than it did late last season. They do lead the entire league in expected goals at 8.6, which tells you the attacking quality is still very much there, and six goals scored puts them among the most productive sides in France. But the goals against column is what will be concerning Toppmoller. Five conceded in three games is not the standard Lens are used to setting.
Lens have the edge when these two clubs have met away from home, and they are looking to win a third successive away fixture at Le Mans this weekend. If they manage it, it would be their first away win against Le Mans in the top flight this century, which gives you a sense of just how long these two have been operating in different divisions for much of the modern era.
The head to head record does not paint a particularly dramatic picture given the time spent apart, but what we can say is that when Lens have travelled to Le Mans in recent times, they have come away with the points. Le Mans will be desperate to prove their home fortress is a match for top flight opposition this time around.
This is a game where the narrative pulls you in two directions. Le Mans at home with momentum and a fortress record is tempting. But Lens, even in poor form, carry enough attacking firepower to hurt any side in this division. The injuries to the visiting squad are significant, but the quality in their forward line is still elite level for Ligue 1. Our angle is that Le Mans will make it competitive and likely get on the scoresheet, but Lens have enough to edge it.
Yes. Le Mans have found the net five times in three Ligue 1 games, and they are clearly capable of scoring at home. Lens, despite their defensive wobble, have the attacking class of Thauvin, Hazard and Edouard to cause problems. Both sides finding the net feels the most likely outcome here.
Over 2.5 goals. Le Mans have been involved in open games this season, and Lens are a side that creates chances in volume. With both teams likely to score and Lens pushing for a response after back to back defeats, this has the feel of a game with at least three goals in it.
2-1 to Lens. The visitors have too much quality up front to be kept out completely, and Le Mans’ habit of conceding when in front suggests they could fall away late. A narrow Lens win feels right given the overall balance of quality, even if Le Mans make them work for it.
Odsonne Edouard. The former Celtic and Crystal Palace striker leads the Lens attack and will be desperate to get back among the goals after a difficult couple of weeks for the club. With Lens likely to get forward early in search of a response, Edouard is the natural focal point and the most likely man to open the scoring.
Over 9.5 corners. Lens love to get wide and put balls into the box, and with Le Mans expected to defend deep at times and hit on the counter, you would expect a decent flow of set pieces in both directions. The attacking intent from the visitors in particular should generate plenty of corners throughout the afternoon.
Over 3.5 cards. With Lens needing a result to stop the rot and Le Mans fired up by a home crowd desperate to see their first top flight home win since 2010, this should be a feisty affair. A promoted side battling to prove themselves against a frustrated giant tends to produce plenty of cynical challenges and bookings. Expect the referee to be busy.
Combine Lens to win, both teams to score, and over 9.5 corners. The logic threads together neatly. Lens carry enough quality to get over the line even in poor form, Le Mans have shown they will get a goal of their own, and the corner count should be healthy given the attacking intent from both sides and the likely tempo of the game.
Le Mans will give this everything they have. The home crowd will be rocking, Sidibe returns to bolster the backline, and there is genuine belief in this squad that they can pull off something special on Sunday. They have the defensive structure and the home record to back that belief up.
But Lens are a different animal to anything Le Mans have faced at home during that 16 game unbeaten run, and the visitors will not be in the mood after two straight defeats. Thauvin, Hazard and Edouard represent a real step up in class, and even with their injury problems, Lens should have just enough to take all three points. We’re going with Lens to shade it 2-1 in a competitive game that goes right down to the wire.
