Who do you think will win?

Two clubs absolutely desperate for a Premier League win welcome each other this weekend, and honestly, it is hard to know which set of fans is suffering more right now. Tottenham Hotspur have been a mess going forward, scoreless in the top flight until a completely meaningless header against Liverpool in the EFL Cup, and the boos at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are already getting loud. Aston Villa are not exactly lighting the world on fire either, sitting on three defeats from four league games, but there is a sense that Unai Emery’s lot are at least beginning to find their feet again after a dreadful start.

The difference heading into this one is momentum in attack. Villa went from one goal in four league games to seven across their last three in all competitions, and Tammy Abraham is banging the door down for a starting spot. Spurs, meanwhile, are still trying to work out how to score, full stop. Roberto De Zerbi has been given some grace by the fanbase given the injury situation, but patience is running out fast on the north London side of things.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Match Details

This Premier League gameweek five fixture takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London. It is the early kick off on Saturday, and given what is riding on it for both clubs in terms of getting that first win on the board, the atmosphere should be tense from the first whistle. Both sides arrive knowing that a defeat here would leave them firmly embedded in the wrong end of the table.

Team News

Spurs are without a long list of players, and a fresh doubt emerged midweek when Sandro Tonali missed the EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool with a knock. De Zerbi has a real headache picking a side he trusts to create and finish chances.

  • Sandro Tonali: doubt with an unspecified knock picked up before the Liverpool game
  • Pedro Porro: muscle problem, doubts remain over his availability
  • Dejan Kulusevski: knee issue, long term absentee
  • Xavi Simons: knee, out for the foreseeable
  • Wilson Odobert: knee, same story
  • Mykhaylo Mudryk: ankle, long term
  • James Maddison: fit enough for back to back substitute appearances and could now be in line for a 45 to 60 minute run from the start
  • Mohammed Kudus: likely to be rested after completing 75 minutes in midweek

Villa get a timely boost with Joao Gomes returning from his three match suspension after being sent off on his debut against Brighton. There are still concerns over a couple of others though.

  • Joao Gomes: back from suspension, straight back into contention
  • Matty Cash: muscle issue, not ruled out but a doubt
  • Brian Madjo: ankle, similarly not ruled out but touch and go
  • Pau Torres: hamstring, out
  • Leon Goretzka: knee, out
  • Ian Maatsen: ankle, out
  • Amadou Onana: knee, out
  • Marco Bizot: back injury picked up midweek, Zion Suzuki steps in goal
  • Tammy Abraham: started the EFL Cup win at Coventry scoring twice, pushing hard for a league start ahead of Nicolas Jackson
  • Johan Manzambi: on the verge of a full debut after two substitute appearances

Predicted Lineups

For Spurs, De Zerbi might be tempted to hand Maddison a start given the attacking creativity he has been crying out for, though the manager will have to manage his minutes carefully. Kudus sitting this one out on the bench seems likely after his exertions in midweek.

Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson; Fernandes, Bentancur; Savio, Maddison, Marmoush; Solanke

Emery has a fascinating call to make up front. Abraham scored twice at Coventry in midweek and looks sharp and hungry, which puts real pressure on Jackson to hold his place. Gomes coming back into midfield is a huge plus and gives Villa some much needed steel in the engine room. Manzambi could well get his first full league start wide.

Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Mings, Ruggeri; Kamara, Barkley; Mbaye, McGinn, Hemmings; Abraham

Recent Form

Tottenham’s Premier League form in 2026 to 2027 has been genuinely worrying. Four games without a win, and until that inconsequential Gallagher header in the cup, four games without a single goal in the top flight. They are one of only two sides yet to score in the league, sharing that grim company with Coventry. The goalless draw with Everton last weekend was notable for being the first ever scoreless top flight game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which tells you everything about how tough things are. The midweek cup loss to Liverpool, going down 3 to 1 despite Gallagher pulling one back, extended the winless run in all competitions to four. The boos are ringing out, and right now there is no obvious fix.

The only team to beat De Zerbi’s side so far in 2026 to 2027 is Charlton Athletic, which is a damning statistic in itself. Spurs are 17th in the Premier League, one point above the drop zone, and the pressure is quietly building on a squad that should be doing considerably better given the investment made. A European win at Club Brugge gave brief cause for optimism, but it has not translated into anything domestically and the confidence of the forward players looks shot.

Villa have had a rough start in the league as well, losing three of their first four games, but there are green shoots. They finally opened their account against Forest, and while they lost that one 2 to 1, the goals are starting to come. Seven goals in three games across all competitions heading into this one suggests the attackers are finding their rhythm. The 3 to 1 win at Coventry in the EFL Cup midweek, with Abraham bagging twice, was exactly the sort of confidence booster Emery’s squad needed before a tricky away trip to north London.

Head-to-Head Record

The recent head to head record is firmly in Villa’s favour. Emery’s side have won four of the last five meetings between these two clubs, which is the kind of stat that will sit very comfortably in the Villa dressing room and very uncomfortably in Spurs’. The one result that breaks that pattern is a 2 to 1 Tottenham win away from home back in May, which will give De Zerbi’s players some belief that they can turn the tide.

In terms of venue, Spurs at home have not been the fortress they would like against Villa in recent years, and with the current mood around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium not exactly electric, Villa will travel with genuine confidence that they can get something here. Form, head to head and momentum all point in the visitors’ direction, which makes this a very interesting betting proposition despite neither side being in great shape overall.

Key Stats

  • Tottenham are one of only two Premier League clubs yet to score in the league in 2026 to 2027, alongside Coventry City
  • Aston Villa have won four of their last five encounters against Tottenham Hotspur
  • Villa have scored seven goals across their last three games in all competitions after managing just one in their opening four league fixtures

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Betting Tips

Both teams are coming into this one with problems, but Villa look the likelier of the two to find the net, their recent goalscoring form is far more encouraging and they have a striker in Abraham who is desperate to prove a point in the Premier League. Spurs have a creative deficit that Maddison returning to the side might help with, but trusting them to take three points here feels like a stretch given everything we have seen so far this season. The value in this game points toward a share of the spoils with both sides nicking a goal each.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Tammy Abraham looks the standout pick here. He has scored twice in midweek, he is full of confidence, and he has the kind of physical presence that can cause problems for a Spurs defence that has not exactly looked watertight. If Emery throws him in from the start, Abraham at a typically generous first goalscorer price is well worth a look.

Cards Prediction

With two struggling sides who need results badly and the intensity that comes with a fixture of this nature, cards feel likely. The midfield battle in particular should be a feisty one now that Gomes is back for Villa, and Bentancur for Spurs is always worth keeping an eye on in that regard. Over 3.5 cards in the game looks a reasonable shout.

Correct Score Prediction

Given the struggles of both sides in front of goal and the way this one sets up tactically, a 1 to 1 draw feels like the most likely outcome. Spurs have enough at home to nick something, Villa have the confidence and quality to cancel it out, and neither side looks ready to push on for a convincing win just yet.

Corners Prediction

Both teams are going to need to push for something in this game, which means plenty of crossing and wide play as the game opens up. Spurs with Savio and Marmoush on the flanks will look to deliver early, and Villa are no strangers to getting bodies into attacking positions either. Over 9.5 corners looks like a solid market to target here.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Neither of these sides has been particularly prolific this season, but Villa are hitting form in front of goal and Spurs desperately need to score at home. Under 2.5 goals feels slightly too restrictive given the current trajectory of both attacks, so over 1.5 goals is the safe play, but if you want a bit more edge, over 2.5 at the right price is worth considering given how much both sides need to find the net.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Spurs have to score at home at some point, and a must win game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is as good a time as any for that drought to end. Villa have rediscovered their attacking instincts over the past week and have the quality to punish a porous Spurs backline. Back both teams to score and you are leaning into the most logical reading of this fixture.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Correct Score 1 to 1
First Goalscorer Tammy Abraham

Abraham in red hot form bagging first, both teams finding the net and the game ending level is a compelling combination that ties together the key themes running through this preview.

Final Match Prediction

This is a game between two clubs going through a difficult spell, but one of them is at least moving in the right direction. Villa look sharper, more confident and have history on their side in this fixture. Spurs need to show their supporters something, and the return of Maddison gives them a creative outlet they have desperately lacked, but it is hard to look at everything pointing toward the visitors and back Tottenham to come away with all three points.

A 1 to 1 draw looks like the most honest prediction here. Spurs finally score at home in the Premier League this season, Villa grab their away goal to extend their decent record against Spurs, and both managers are left wondering what might have been. Not the most exciting conclusion, but this is a game that feels like it is setting up for exactly that kind of grinding, tense afternoon.
