Who do you think will win?

The Black Country derby is back at Molineux with supporters in the stands for the first time in over fourteen years, and that alone makes this one of the most compelling Championship fixtures you will see all season. But beyond the emotion and the history, there are genuine tactical questions to answer here. Can Wolves cope without their main striker? Can West Brom carry their early season form into the most hostile atmosphere in the second tier? This preview digs into all of it.

Cesar Peixoto has his side moving in the right direction, but Jimenez picking up a knee injury at Everton in midweek changes the picture for Sunday considerably. West Brom meanwhile arrive at Molineux sitting joint top of the Championship and full of confidence under James Morrison. This one has all the ingredients.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs West Bromwich Albion Match Details

The Black Country derby takes place at Molineux, the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers, in the Sky Bet Championship. It is Wolves first season back in the second tier in eight years, and the significance of this particular fixture carrying full supporter presence from both ends makes it one of the most anticipated games of the early Championship season.

Team News

Wolves have taken a real blow ahead of the weekend, and West Brom will know about it before Morrison even picks up a marker to write his team on the tactics board.

  • Raul Jimenez picked up a knee problem during the EFL Cup defeat at Everton and Peixoto has confirmed he will miss the derby. Adam Armstrong is expected to lead the line instead.
  • Rafiki Said remains sidelined with a muscle injury and has yet to make a competitive appearance since arriving in the summer.
  • Bertrand Traore made his Wolves debut at Everton and scored, which will have caught Morrison’s eye. He netted against West Brom in December 2020 as well, so he carries a bit of history in this fixture.
  • For West Brom, Nolan Galves is still out at right back with a knee problem, leaving Morrison to make a call on his defensive options.
  • Brayann Pereira returns from suspension but Morrison is expected to keep Callum Styles at right back for such a high profile game rather than disrupt the shape.

Predicted Lineups

Peixoto will likely set Wolves up with Sa in goal behind a back four of Tchatchoua, Djiga, Krejci and Bueno. Andre and Munetsi should anchor the midfield, with James, Lopez and Mane supporting Armstrong up front. Traore is a useful option off the bench if the game needs opening up.

Morrison should go with O’Leary in goal. Styles covers at right back with Phillips, Campbell and Townsend completing the defensive line. Molumby and Nzingoula are the engine in the middle, with Whitwell and Price providing width. Morgan and Heggebo lead the attack. It is a team with plenty of Championship quality throughout.

Recent Form

Wolves have made a solid enough start to life back in the Championship, which will pleasantly surprise anyone who feared a slow adjustment after eight years in the top flight. Peixoto has kept them unbeaten at Molineux through their first three home games, winning two and drawing one, with nine goals scored at the ground in that spell. That is an impressive return and gives the home crowd something to work with when the Baggies walk out on Sunday.

The midweek EFL Cup exit to Everton is a setback in terms of morale and injury impact, but league form is what counts. Wolves sit seventh in the Championship, a game fewer played than some of those above them, and that win over Sheffield United sealed by a Jimenez goal in the 90th minute showed they know how to grind results out when they need to.

West Brom have been brilliant. Joint top of the Championship on 14 points, they come into this having drawn their most recent league outing with Queens Park Rangers but they are clearly a side in real form. Morrison has organised them well and they travel to Molineux with genuine belief rather than just hope. The Baggies are not here making up the numbers.

Head-to-Head Record

Wolves hold the bragging rights in the most recent meeting between the clubs, with Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha doing the damage in an FA Cup tie back in January 2024. But the last time West Brom came to Molineux with supporters in the stadium was February 2012, and the Baggies made it a day to remember, winning 5 1 with Peter Odemwingie scoring a hat trick. That result still stings for a certain generation of Wolves fans, and the fact that West Brom actually produced DVD highlights of it tells you everything about what it meant to them.

There was also that January 2021 visit, played behind closed doors, when Matheus Pereira scored twice in a 3 2 West Brom win at Molineux. So even without supporters, the Baggies found a way to win on that ground in recent times. The head to head at Molineux certainly does not automatically favour the hosts.

Key Stats

  • Wolves are unbeaten in three home games this season, scoring nine goals at Molineux across those fixtures.
  • West Brom are joint top of the Championship on 14 points, one of the standout early season performers in the division.
  • The last time West Brom visited Molineux with a full away end was over fourteen years ago, a 5 1 win that is seared into the memory of anyone who was there.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs West Bromwich Albion Betting Tips

This is a derby between two sides who are genuinely competitive at this level right now. Wolves lose their top scorer to injury, which is a significant handicap, but they have home advantage and a crowd that will be absolutely rocking from the first whistle. West Brom are in form and have good recent memories at this ground. The angle here is not one team steamrolling the other. It is a competitive, open game with goals at both ends.

Corners Prediction

Two sides who like to attack and will be pushing for the decisive moment in a high stakes derby. Expect both teams to get bodies forward and create plenty of set piece situations. Going over 9.5 corners looks a reasonable call given the attacking intent on both sides.

Correct Score Prediction

With Jimenez missing and neither side wanting to lose a derby, a 2 2 draw feels like it captures the likely pattern of this game. Both attacks have quality, both defences will be under pressure, and the raw emotion of the occasion makes clean sheets unlikely.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Bertrand Traore is worth a shout here. He scored on his debut against Everton, he has history against West Brom having netted against them in 2020, and with Armstrong leading the line Traore should get opportunities in behind the Baggies backline either from the start or early off the bench.

Cards Prediction

It is a Black Country derby. The needle is built in before a ball is kicked. Both sets of players will be pumped up and the tackles will come flying in early doors. Over 3.5 cards is a market worth considering, and you would not be surprised to see a red if things boil over in the second half.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. The Wolves attack has been firing at Molineux this season and West Brom carry a real threat going forward. Add the emotional intensity of the occasion and the fact that neither manager will set up to play for a point from the off, and goals feel inevitable.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Wolves have scored in all three of their home games this season, and West Brom have found the net consistently throughout their strong start to the campaign. With Wolves missing their main striker there is a reasonable question mark over their attacking threat, but Traore and Armstrong together have enough to trouble the Baggies backline. BTTS yes makes sense here.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over
Over 3.5 Cards Over

Two attacking sides in derby conditions with a feisty atmosphere points squarely toward goals at both ends and cards flying around throughout.

Final Match Prediction

Losing Jimenez is a real problem for Wolves going into the biggest home game of their Championship season so far, but this is Molineux in a derby and Peixoto will have his players absolutely ready for it. West Brom are genuine contenders this season and Morrison knows this ground well from his playing days, which adds a nice subplot to proceedings.

The feeling here is that both teams find the net and neither can quite hold on for the win. A 2 2 draw would be a fair reflection of where these two sides are right now, and would leave both sets of supporters with plenty to argue about heading into the international break. Prediction: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 2 West Bromwich Albion.
