Who do you think will win?

Valencia needed that win. Four defeats on the spin will do things to a dressing room, and you could feel the relief when Rioja popped up off the bench to beat Alaves. But one win does not paper over the cracks of a side sitting 18th in La Liga after six games, and this is not the kind of fixture that screams comfortable afternoon for Los Che. Real Sociedad arrive at Mestalla under their own pressure though, having been thumped 3-0 by Atletico Madrid at the weekend before a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth in the Europa League midweek. Two losses on the bounce, and Matarazzo will know another one here would start making the natives very restless indeed.

So you have a home side desperately trying to find any kind of footing in a season that has started poorly, against a visiting side who are carrying form like a lead weight. Something has to give. Or maybe nothing does. Either way, Mestalla should be crackling on Sunday night.

Valencia vs Real Sociedad Match Details

This La Liga fixture takes place at Mestalla, Valencia’s iconic ground that has been sending noise and nerves through visiting sides for well over a century. The stadium carries real weight in Spanish football and with Valencia needing points urgently, the crowd will be up for this one. Real Sociedad make the trip from the Basque Country as the higher-placed side, but not by enough to feel comfortable about it.

Team News

Valencia are dealing with a significant injury list and Ruben Baraja will have very little room for manoeuvre in his squad selections. Real Sociedad are a bit better off but still have a couple of notable absentees to manage.

  • Diego Lopez, Mouctar Diakhaby, Umar Sadiq, Cesar Tarrega, Dimitri Foulquier, Jose Copete and Sergi Canos are all unavailable for Valencia
  • Luis Rioja scored the winner against Alaves off the bench and is expected to move into the starting eleven
  • Hugo Duro should continue as the central striker, with Arnaut Danjuma wide on the left
  • Alvaro Odriozola remains a long-term absentee for Real Sociedad with a serious knee injury
  • Igor Zubeldia is set to miss a third consecutive game through a fitness problem
  • Goncalo Guedes, Luka Sucic, Carlos Soler and Alex Remiro are all expected to return to the starting eleven after being rested for the Europa League tie
  • Mikel Oyarzabal starts through the middle despite having yet to score in seven appearances this season

Predicted Lineups

Valencia look set to line up with Dimitrievski in goal behind a back four of Maffeo, Pepelu, De Haas and Gaya. Mayol and Rodriguez should sit in midfield, with Rioja, Guerra and Danjuma providing the attacking width and movement behind Duro up front. It is a side put together with limited resources at the minute, but the bones of a workable structure are there.

Real Sociedad should look considerably fresher than they did against Bournemouth in midweek. Remiro returns in goal, with Aramburu, Beitia, Sarr and Gomez in defence. Herrera and Soler should sit in the engine room, with Barrenetxea, Sucic and Guedes behind Oyarzabal. La Real have real quality in this lineup when they are at full tilt, and Matarazzo will be desperate for them to show it here.

Recent Form

Valencia’s season has been a rough ride. Before beating Alaves, they had lost four on the bounce against Real Betis, Deportivo La Coruna, Barcelona and Sevilla. Four points from six games, one win, one draw, four defeats. For a club that finished ninth last season and has six La Liga titles in the cabinet, that is a sobering return, and there is genuine concern about where this campaign is heading. The Alaves victory was welcome but it was narrow, and it came against one of the division’s weaker sides. The real test of whether that win has done anything for their confidence comes now.

Real Sociedad look a side in need of a reset. Seven points from six La Liga games tells a more respectable story on the surface, two wins, a draw and three defeats, but the manner of the recent losses stings. A 3-0 battering from Atletico followed by a home defeat to Bournemouth is not what anyone in San Sebastian was hoping for. To be fair to La Real, two of their last four league outings ended in wins, and they have only lost once in that specific run, so the Liga form is not catastrophic. The European hangover is the bigger worry. Matarazzo will want his side to use this game to draw a line under a difficult week.

Both sides arrive here needing a result more than they need anything else. That kind of desperation can produce open, scrappy football, or it can produce two nervous teams cancelling each other out. Given the attacking talent in both squads, backing on the cautious end feels like leaving money on the table.

Head-to-Head Record

Valencia have the better of this fixture historically, winning 68 of the 162 meetings between these two clubs to Real Sociedad’s 53, with 41 draws along the way. At Mestalla specifically, Los Che have generally been comfortable. The most recent meeting came in May of this year, with Valencia running out 4-3 winners in a proper thriller. Before that, the reverse fixture at Mestalla last term ended 1-1. So you have got a pattern of open, goalful games between these two when they get going, even if the head-to-head historically tends to favour the home side.

Key Stats

  • Valencia have taken just four points from six La Liga games, placing them 18th in the table
  • Real Sociedad have conceded three goals in each of their last two competitive matches
  • The last head-to-head meeting between these clubs produced seven goals across 90 minutes

Valencia vs Real Sociedad Betting Tips

This is a tricky one to call on the result front, and anyone telling you they have it nailed is probably getting carried away. What does feel clear is that goals should be on the menu. Both defences have been leaky, both attacks have the personnel to hurt teams, and the head-to-head history backs up the over rather than the under. The angle here is to lean into the goals markets and pick your spots carefully rather than loading up on a straight result bet.

Correct Score Prediction

Given the recent 4-3 between these sides, the leakiness at both ends this season and the pressure on both squads to actually attack and get points, a 2-2 draw feels like a fair landing spot. Valencia have enough at home to score, Real Sociedad have the quality to respond, and neither backline looks solid enough to see a clean sheet through.

Cards Prediction

With both sides under pressure and a historic rivalry adding edge to proceedings, this fixture tends to have some bite to it. Mestalla crowds do not make life comfortable for referees either. Back over three and a half cards in this one, with midfield battles between the likes of Rodriguez and Herrera likely to get scrappy as the game progresses.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Hugo Duro is the man to back here. He leads the line for Valencia and with Rioja, Guerra and Danjuma supplying from wide areas, he should get opportunities against a Real Sociedad back four that has conceded six goals in two games. Duro as first scorer at a decent price looks like a solid shout.

Corners Prediction

Both teams like to get wide and both will be pushing for goals given their respective situations in the table. A high-tempo game at Mestalla with two attacking lineups should generate plenty of set piece situations. Back over nine corners in this fixture, which feels very achievable given the way both sides approach games going forward.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, and it is not a particularly difficult call. Real Sociedad have scored in their last two despite losing both. Valencia got on the scoresheet against Alaves and have enough going forward to cause problems. With six goals in the last direct meeting and both backlines struggling for clean sheets this season, both teams to score looks like one of the stronger plays on the card.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Corners Over 9.5
First Goalscorer Hugo Duro

A goalful, end-to-end game at Mestalla with both sides pushing forward creates the ideal conditions for all three of these picks to land together.

Final Match Prediction

This has all the ingredients for a proper game of football. Two sides low on confidence, one desperate for home comfort, the other trying to arrest a two-game skid, meeting in a ground that creates its own pressure. Real Sociedad have more quality on paper when fit and fresh, but they are neither fully fit nor particularly fresh right now. Valencia at Mestalla, with the crowd behind them and a recent win in the legs, should not be written off.

The 4-3 in May tells you everything you need to know about what happens when these two really get at each other. Expect goals from both ends again. Valencia 2-2 Real Sociedad is the call, a draw that satisfies nobody but probably reflects exactly where both clubs are right now.
