Who do you think will win?

Malaga arrive at Estadio Coliseum still searching for their first win of the 2026/27 La Liga season, which tells you everything you need to know about the size of the job facing Juan Francisco Funes right now. The question here is simple enough: can a Getafe side that has barely got out of second gear themselves take advantage of a fragile opponent, or will this turn into another frustrating afternoon for a home crowd that expected more after last season’s seventh place finish?

On paper, Getafe have the edge. In practice, this is a fixture that could easily drag into uncomfortable territory if the hosts are not sharp early. Let us break it all down.

Getafe vs Malaga Match Details

This La Liga fixture takes place at the Estadio Coliseum in Getafe, a ground that has long been associated with compact, physical, hard to beat football under Jose Bordalas. Alongside their league campaign, Getafe have also been active in the Conference League this term, having come through the playoff stage against Partizan on a 4-3 aggregate, which means their squad has been stretched across more fixtures than most teams at this stage of the season.

Team News

Getafe are dealing with a significant injury list, and they also go into this one with a suspension to manage. Mario Martin is ruled out after picking up a red card in the defeat to Real Betis, which limits Bordalas’ midfield options straight away. Beyond that, there is a lengthy treatment room queue.

  • Abdel Abqar (injury)
  • Juanmi (injury)
  • Kiko Femenia (injury)
  • Borja Mayoral (injury)
  • Christantus Uche (injury)
  • Mario Martin (suspension)

Malaga are in a similarly difficult position with their own injury problems. With so many players missing, Funes has precious little cover across the pitch.

  • Julen Lobete (injury)
  • Fernando Calero (injury)
  • Moussa Diarra (injury)
  • Diego Murillo (injury)
  • Aaron Ochoa (injury)
  • Adam Aznou (injury)
  • Jens Cajuste (injury)

Predicted Lineups

Bordalas looks set to shuffle his pack given the absences, with Enes Unal likely handed a start up front. Johan Mojica should come in at left back, and Alberto Risco Alcantara is expected to get a slot in midfield. It will be a reshaped XI, but the bones of a Bordalas side are always the same: organised, aggressive, hard to play through.

Getafe probable XI: Soria; Garcia, Djene, Romero, Mojica; Gudelj; Francho, Mangala, Alcantara, Satriano; Unal

For Malaga, the attacking responsibility falls heavily on Chupe, one of only three players to have scored this season. Carlos Dotor, who has also got on the scoresheet, keeps his place in the XI. With seven first team players unavailable, Funes does not have many options if his starting lineup is not performing.

Malaga probable XI: Herrero; Puga, Recio, Galilea, Salinas; Merino; Cruz, Larrubia, Dotor, Martinez; Chupe

Recent Form

Getafe sit 16th in La Liga with five points from six games, a return of one win, two draws and three defeats. That is not the form of a team pushing into the top half, but finishing seventh last season shows there is quality in this squad when it clicks. The issue is that it has not clicked nearly enough. A 1-0 defeat to Real Betis last time out means they have taken just two points from their last four league outings, and the goals have dried up at the wrong end of the season for Bordalas to feel comfortable.

Malaga are in a worse position. Three points from six games, sitting 19th, with only three goals scored and 11 conceded across those matches. The promoted side had a reasonable start to September on paper, drawing back to back against Levante and Celta Vigo, but they were then torn apart 3-1 at home by Villarreal in their last outing. For a team that worked so hard to get back into La Liga through the Segunda playoff, this is exactly the kind of run that gets managers sacked and fans nervous. They desperately need a result, and they are not going to a friendly venue to find it.

There is also a notable subplot around the club at the moment with reports circulating about a potential move for Anthony Martial, who would obviously represent a significant statement of intent if it came off. But transfers do not put points on the board, and right now Malaga need performances, not headlines.

Head-to-Head Record

Across 26 meetings in all competitions, Getafe have won 11 of them, which is a fairly modest record against a side they should historically be expected to beat more often given respective league standings over the years. However, recent history is a different story. Getafe have won three of the last four encounters between these clubs, which gives them a clear psychological edge heading into this one.

At the Estadio Coliseum specifically, Getafe tend to grind out results through organisation and set piece threat rather than open football. Malaga, given their form and the number of players missing, may find it very difficult to break that down.

Key Stats

  • Malaga have scored just three goals in six league games this season, one of the lowest attacking outputs in the division
  • Getafe have won three of the last four head to head meetings between these sides
  • Malaga have conceded 11 goals in six La Liga fixtures, an average of nearly two per game

Getafe vs Malaga Betting Tips

Getafe are not in great form themselves, but this fixture sets up nicely for the home side when you weigh up Malaga’s attacking poverty, their defensive fragility, and the fact that the visitors have yet to win a game this season. Bordalas will set his team up to be compact and clinical on the counter, and with Unal likely leading the line, there is enough quality there to punish a Malaga back line that has been leaking goals at a worrying rate.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Enes Unal looks the standout pick here. Coming into the XI with a point to prove, playing as the central striker for a side that will be looking to hit Malaga on the break, he is well placed to get on the end of things. Malaga’s defence has been all over the place this season and Unal is a proven finisher at this level.

Correct Score Prediction

Given Malaga’s inability to score and Getafe’s recent defensive solidity when they need it, a 2-0 home win looks the most likely outcome. The hosts do not need to be at their brilliant best to win this one. They just need to be organised and take their chances when they come.

Corners Prediction

Expect a relatively low corners count. Bordalas teams do not tend to dominate possession or throw bodies forward relentlessly, and Malaga are not the type to pin teams back and force a high volume of set pieces from wide areas. Under 9.5 corners looks the sensible play in this one.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

No is the call here. Malaga have managed just three goals across six league games, and Getafe have shown they can keep things tight when organised properly. Backing BTTS when one team is this toothless in front of goal is a tough sell, and the head to head history supports a shutout from the home side being a genuine possibility.

Cards Prediction

Bordalas sides have always been associated with a combative, physical style, and Malaga, under pressure and chasing the game, may not always be pretty about how they go about their business either. This feels like a fixture where cards could stack up, particularly in the second half if Malaga are chasing the game. Over 3.5 cards is worth a look.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Getafe to Win
Both Teams To Score No
First Goalscorer Enes Unal

Getafe to win, BTTS No, and Unal to open the scoring all point in the same direction and combine nicely given Malaga’s defensive vulnerabilities and their inability to find the net consistently this season.

Final Match Prediction

Getafe are not setting the world alight this season, but they are good enough to beat a Malaga side this low on confidence, goals and available players. Bordalas will get his team organised, Unal will cause problems, and a clean sheet is very much on the cards given how little the visitors have offered going forward this season.

Getafe to win this one 2-0, grinding out the three points without too much fuss. Malaga’s wait for their first victory of the campaign goes on.
