Who do you think will win?

There are derbies, and then there is Le Classique. Marseille against Paris Saint-Germain is one of those fixtures where the form guide gets thrown out of the window, where players dig something extra out and where the whole of French football stops to watch. On paper this one sets up fascinatingly, because neither side has hit the ground running this season, which makes it feel slightly more unpredictable than the recent vintage of this fixture. Both fanbases are nervous, both managers need a result, and the Velodrome is going to be absolutely rocking.

The twist this time around is that Marseille are genuinely struggling. Not just a slow burner, actually struggling. And PSG, despite all their resources, have been shakier than anyone expected early doors. A wobbling giant against a wounded home side with a partisan crowd behind them. That is the kind of setup that makes neutral football fans pull up a chair.

Marseille vs Paris Saint-Germain Match Details

This is the first Le Classique of the 2026/27 Ligue 1 campaign, played at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. The stadium is always a cauldron for this fixture, and with both sides carrying a point to prove after unconvincing starts to the season, the atmosphere is going to be something else. A huge game in the context of the title race too, with Monaco already pulling clear at the top and neither of these clubs able to afford another slip.

Team News

Marseille have a few concerns heading into this one, with their squad stretched after a punishing midweek. PSG also carry a significant absentee into what is their biggest fixture so far this season.

  • Geoffrey Kondogbia is out for Marseille, still working through a thigh injury that has kept him sidelined for a couple of weeks now.
  • Tochukwu Nnadi is edging towards a return from a suspected ACL injury but will not feature here, with Bruno Genesio not rushing him back.
  • Derek Cornelius came off during the week against Besiktas with a knock and is a doubt, though Nayef Aguerd and CJ Egan-Riley are expected to form the central defensive partnership.
  • Achraf Hakimi is a major doubt for PSG after being forced off in the first half against Brest with a right thigh strain. That is a big blow for Luis Enrique.
  • Warren Zaire-Emery is likely to fill in at right back in Hakimi’s absence, which shifts the midfield picture considerably.
  • Ilya Zabarnyi and Senny Mayulu were both left out of the squad for the Brest trip and their availability here is unclear, though PSG’s bench is expected to be strong regardless.

Predicted Lineups

Genesio looks set to line up with a back four of Weah, Egan-Riley, Aguerd and Emerson, with Abdelli and Hojbjerg providing midfield cover and Harit given licence to create behind the front line. Amine Gouiri leads the attack, and with four league goals already to his name this season he will be the focal point of everything Marseille try to do going forward.

Enrique faces a reshuffle without Hakimi, but the quality at his disposal remains frightening. Safonov starts in goal, with Zaire-Emery sliding into that right back role, Marquinhos captaining the side and Pacho alongside him, Mendes on the left. Vitinha and Neves anchor the midfield with Fabian Ruiz ahead of them, while the front three of Dembele, Ferran Torres and Kvaratskhelia will cause nightmares for any defence in Europe, let alone one as porous as Marseille have been recently.

Recent Form

Marseille’s start to the season has been alarming. A 4-0 opening day win against Strasbourg got the blood pumping, but since then it has fallen apart rapidly. Defeats to Monaco, Paris FC and Rennes in the league, and then a 4-1 hammering against Besiktas in the Europa League in midweek. That Besiktas result is particularly damning because it was on home turf in Europe, and it meant Marseille had shipped 10 goals in four matches across all competitions going into this weekend. The back four is creaking badly, and the confidence of the whole squad will have taken a hit from that European thumping.

PSG’s form is a more complicated picture. After winning back-to-back Ligue 1 and Champions League doubles, which made them only the second club ever to retain that particular combination after Ajax in 1973, they came into this season expected to dominate again. Instead they collected just two points from three league games, leading to question marks about whether the squad has taken its eye off the domestic ball. But then came a 6-1 demolition of Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, and a 1-0 win at Brest in the league last weekend. They are building momentum at exactly the right time, and a trip to the Velodrome gives them the chance to really announce themselves as serious title contenders again.

What stands out in the context of this match is the defensive comparison. PSG are conceding an average of 1.5 goals per game in Ligue 1 this season, which is notably worse than the 0.85 they averaged across all of last campaign. But Marseille have been leaking goals at an even more alarming rate, so the question is whether either back four can hold firm under pressure. Given the attacking talent PSG can call upon, the smart money is on the visitors finding a way through.

Head-to-Head Record

Recent history in this fixture belongs to PSG, and it is not particularly close. Marseille have lost seven of the previous eight meetings with their rivals, including an absolute battering in Paris last February where PSG won 5-0 at the Parc des Princes. That result tells you everything about the gulf in quality between the two squads at their respective peaks. The one bright spot for Marseille fans in the recent record is that they did win 1-0 at the Velodrome last season, which shows this ground can bring something different out of them in this particular fixture.

Enrique will be well aware of that result and will not want a repeat. PSG have the players to avoid it, but the Velodrome atmosphere has a habit of dragging teams down to a level they did not expect, and Marseille’s supporters are capable of lifting their side when logic suggests they should not be able to.

Key Stats

  • Marseille have conceded 10 goals in their last four matches across all competitions, including four in a single game at home in midweek.
  • PSG’s Ferran Torres has scored six goals since joining in the summer, making him the standout attacking threat in what is already a frightening front three.
  • Marseille have lost seven of their last eight encounters with PSG, including a 5-0 defeat in Paris earlier this year.

Marseille vs Paris Saint-Germain Betting Tips

This fixture always carries spice regardless of the context, but the stats paint a pretty clear picture here. Marseille are shipping goals at a worrying rate, PSG’s attack is clicking into gear, and the head to head record overwhelmingly favours the visitors. The angle here is backing PSG to win, targeting their attacking threats for the scoresheet, and expecting goals at both ends given neither defence has been remotely convincing this season.

Corners Prediction

PSG’s front three generates corners for fun, with Dembele and Kvaratskhelia both direct and dangerous down the flanks. Marseille will look to get forward too when they can. Expect a high corner count, with the over 10 corners market looking genuinely attractive given the attacking intent likely to be on show from the Paris side in particular.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Ferran Torres is the pick here. Six goals already this season since his summer arrival, a World Cup winner’s confidence and a habit of showing up in big matches. With Hakimi missing and the PSG attack given licence to express themselves, Torres has the movement and the killer instinct to be first on the scoresheet in a match that sets up perfectly for him.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals looks nailed on. Marseille cannot keep a clean sheet right now, PSG have the firepower to exploit that ruthlessly, and even Marseille with their backs against the wall are capable of grabbing one through Gouiri. The 4-1 scoreline in midweek, the 5-0 in Paris earlier this year, the goals tally across both squads recently. This has goals written all over it.

Cards Prediction

Le Classique always runs hot, and with Marseille’s players knowing the magnitude of this match in front of their own fans, there will be intensity and edge throughout. The home side will not roll over, and with PSG’s forwards running at them repeatedly, tackles will fly in. Back over 3.5 cards, this one is almost certain to deliver on that front.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes for both teams to score. Marseille are leaking goals but they do have Gouiri in the kind of form that can hurt anyone, and PSG’s defence has its own vulnerabilities this season. The Velodrome crowd will push Marseille forward and Genesio will not set up to just sit deep and absorb pressure. Both sides will find the net here.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Paris Saint-Germain to Win
First Goalscorer Ferran Torres
Both Teams To Score Yes

A PSG win with both teams scoring fits the pattern of this fixture perfectly, and Torres opening the scoring adds the value while remaining entirely plausible given his form and the attacking platform Enrique builds around him.

Final Match Prediction

Marseille will give this everything they have, and the Velodrome crowd will make sure of that. But the reality is that their defensive frailties are too severe right now, and PSG’s attack is too good. Genesio’s side might grab a goal, as they are capable of that even in poor form through Gouiri, but they simply do not have the defensive structure to keep PSG out for long enough to get a result.

PSG come to the south of France and leave with all three points, Enrique’s side continuing their climb back up the table. Marseille will have moments, the crowd will roar, but quality tells in the end. Marseille 1-3 Paris Saint-Germain.
