CompetitionAfrican Cup of Nations Qualifying
Who do you think will win?

There is something genuinely compelling about watching a nation recalibrate after a World Cup. Morocco come into this AFCON qualifier with a squad that has been through the full range of emotions over the last year or so, from the controversy of that continental final against Senegal, to a creditable run at the global tournament in North America that ended in the quarter-finals against France. Now comes the business of qualifying for the next Africa Cup of Nations, and the Atlas Lions will want to make a statement from the off.

Gabon, meanwhile, are in a very different place. A group stage exit at AFCON 2025, a playoff loss to Nigeria that ended their World Cup dreams, and now the challenge of rebuilding under a new coach without the most totemic player this country has produced in a generation. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has retired from international football, and the Panthers need to figure out who they are without him. That kind of identity question makes for a fascinating subplot to what might look on paper like a straightforward home win for Morocco.

Morocco vs Gabon Match Details

The fixture takes place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the same venue that hosted Morocco’s matches during the 2025 AFCON campaign. This is a Group A qualifier for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Lesotho and Niger also in the group. Morocco swept their previous qualifying bracket clean and will be looking to pick up exactly where they left off in home competitive football.

Team News

Morocco are dealing with a notable absence list, though some of those missing are through suspension rather than form concerns. Gabon are without two key figures and must navigate an era-defining moment in their footballing identity.

  • Achraf Hakimi is suspended. The captain misses out due to a CAF ban stemming from the AFCON 2025 final.
  • Ismael Saibari also serves a suspension from the same incidents in that final.
  • Ayoub El Kaabi, Chadi Riad, Youssef Belammari, Youssef En-Nesyri and Hamza Igamane are all unavailable through injury or fitness concerns.
  • Sofyan Amrabat has made himself unavailable for selection.
  • Noussair Mazraoui, Brahim Diaz and Soufiane Rahimi are expected to be available and prominent for the Atlas Lions.
  • Gabon are without Mario Lemina and Jim Allevinah through injury, with Clech Loufilou and Randy Essang Matouti brought in as replacements.
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has retired from international football and will not feature again.
  • Denis Bouanga and Rody Junior Effaghe are expected to carry the attacking burden for the Panthers.

Predicted Lineups

Mohamed Ouahbi has some genuine headaches at the back and in midfield given the suspensions and injuries, but the squad still has quality throughout. Mazraoui is likely to step in at right back, with Aguerd and Diop forming the central partnership. Ounahi and El Aynaoui should provide the engine in the middle of the park, and the front line of Brahim Diaz, El Khannouss and Ezzalzouli behind Rahimi offers real creative threat even without the usual suspects.

For Gabon, Sebastien Migne will lean heavily on his experienced core. Anthony Oyono and Jeremy Oyono offer dynamism from the wide positions, while Kanga, Ndong and Poko bring seniority and nous in the middle. Bouanga is the main man up front now, with Effaghe expected to offer pace and movement alongside him. It is a side that could be organised and hard to break down, even if the firepower up top is clearly diminished from what it once was.

Morocco: Bounou; Mazraoui, Aguerd, Diop, Salah-Eddine; Ounahi, El Aynaoui; Brahim Diaz, El Khannouss, Ezzalzouli; Rahimi

Gabon: Amonome; A Oyono, Appindangoye, J Oyono, Ekomie; Poko, Kanga, Ndong; Bouanga, Babicka, Effaghe

Recent Form

Morocco’s World Cup campaign told you a lot about what this team is about under pressure. They drew with Brazil in their opener, which is no small feat regardless of the stage of the tournament, then got the job done against Scotland and Haiti to finish second in their group. Beating the Netherlands on penalties in the round of 32 and then knocking out co-hosts Canada in the last 16 before going out to France in the quarters. That is a tournament run that speaks to a resilient, competitive outfit even in a period of transition under a relatively new gaffer.

Their home record is also worth flagging here. Since a friendly defeat to Burkina Faso back in July 2025, Morocco have not lost in regulation at home. That run covers their entire AFCON 2025 campaign at this very stadium. On their own patch, with their own crowd, they are a very different proposition to what you might face in a neutral venue.

Gabon’s numbers make for uncomfortable reading. Five defeats in their last six matches, and the only positive result in that sequence came on penalties after a 2-2 draw with Trinidad and Tobago in a FIFA Series match back in March. That is not a side brimming with confidence. Their AFCON 2025 campaign was a washout, three group games, three defeats against Cameroon, Mozambique and Ivory Coast. The World Cup qualifying run had shown more promise, but they could not get past Nigeria when it really mattered. There is a clear rebuilding job underway here.

Head-to-Head Record

The recent head-to-head record between these two sides tells its own story. Both meetings in the 2025 AFCON qualifying group went heavily in Morocco’s favour, with the Atlas Lions winning 4-1 and 5-1. Gabon have not beaten Morocco in their last three encounters, and there is little in the current form of either side to suggest that record is about to change.

The venue matters too. Morocco were dominant throughout that previous qualifying campaign and never dropped a home game in the group. Gabon will have the memory of those heavy defeats fresh in the squad’s minds, and that is a psychological burden that Migne will need to address in his preparation.

Key Stats

  • Morocco are unbeaten at home in regulation time since July 2025, a run spanning their entire AFCON 2025 campaign and beyond.
  • Gabon have lost five of their last six matches, with their only positive result in that run coming via a penalty shootout.
  • The last two meetings between these sides produced 4-1 and 5-1 victories for Morocco, with Gabon failing to win any of the last three encounters.

Morocco vs Gabon Betting Tips

The overall picture here points clearly in one direction. Morocco are the superior side by a considerable margin, playing at home, in strong form on their own patch, and with far more quality in depth despite the suspensions and injuries. Gabon are in the middle of rebuilding without their greatest ever player and arrive on the back of a poor run. The value in this fixture is finding the right way to frame Morocco’s expected dominance.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Given Morocco’s attacking options and Gabon’s fragile defensive confidence coming off a run of heavy defeats, this has the look of a game where goals flow. The previous two meetings produced nine goals between them, and while this might not reach those extremes, over 2.5 goals feels like the natural call here.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Gabon have shown they can create chances even when results have gone against them, and Bouanga in particular is a genuine threat at this level. Morocco have conceded in their last few competitive outings too. There is a reasonable case for both teams to find the net, though the more conservative view would be that Morocco’s back line keeps things tight. On balance, with Gabon needing to come forward at some point, a goal at the other end looks possible, but this is not a confident yes on BTTS given the quality gap.

Cards Prediction

Gabon’s experienced midfield, particularly Kanga and Ndong, tend to be physical presences and may need to be as Morocco dominate possession. A frustrated Panther side chasing the game could easily see a couple of yellows accumulate in the second half. Over 3.5 cards across the match looks worth considering in a fixture where one side will be under sustained pressure.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Soufiane Rahimi is the name to side with here. He is Morocco’s primary striker in this setup, leads the line with pace and clever movement, and loves playing at home. With Gabon expected to sit deep and invite pressure, Rahimi should get his opportunities inside the box and he is the kind of finisher who punishes teams that give him a sniff.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Morocco Win
Over/Under Goals Over 2.5 Goals
First Goalscorer Soufiane Rahimi

Morocco winning a high-scoring game with Rahimi on the scoresheet fits everything we know about this fixture, their home dominance, their recent head-to-head superiority over Gabon, and Rahimi’s role as the focal point of the attack.

Final Match Prediction

This is a hard game to talk yourself out of backing Morocco in. They are playing at home, they have not lost there in over a year, they demolished this same Gabon side twice in the last qualifying campaign, and Gabon are coming into the match having lost five of their last six. Even with Hakimi absent and several others missing, the Atlas Lions have too much quality across the pitch to be troubled by a Panthers side still searching for a new identity without Aubameyang.

Gabon may grab something from the game, but Morocco should be well ahead by the time that happens. A comfortable home win is the call here, with the Atlas Lions setting the tone for their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in convincing fashion.

Predicted Score: Morocco 3-1 Gabon
