CompetitionAfrican Cup of Nations Qualifying
Who do you think will win?

Egypt have been on quite a journey lately. A World Cup run that saw them push Argentina to the absolute limit, going 2-0 up before eventually losing 3-2 in a game full of controversy, followed by a fourth place finish at last year’s AFCON. The Pharaohs are not a side in decline. If anything, they arrive at this qualifier full of belief and with a squad that still carries genuine world class quality. The road to a record eighth AFCON crown starts here, and Hossam Hassan will want his side to set the tone from game one.

Angola come into this one quietly confident. Aliou Cisse has them unbeaten in their last four, and the Sable Antelopes have shown in recent meetings that Egypt are not a side you simply cannot get a result against. They held the Pharaohs to a draw in last year’s AFCON group stage, and they will arrive in Cairo knowing that point is very much achievable again. But Egypt on home soil, with Salah in the squad and a point to prove, is a serious challenge for any African nation.

Egypt vs Angola Match Details

This is an Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying fixture, played at the Cairo International Stadium. Egypt are the home side and will be backed by a passionate crowd that always turns out in force for international nights at this ground. Angola travel across the continent knowing a positive result here would set them up nicely ahead of their second qualifier against Malawi.

Team News

Egypt have named a 24-man squad for these qualifiers, with 22 of those players having been part of the World Cup setup. Hassan has some notable absences to manage but the quality in the group remains exceptional.

  • Mohamed El-Shenawy is absent from the squad entirely.
  • Yasser Ibrahim is out through injury.
  • Mahmoud Trezeguet is also sidelined with injury.
  • Marwan Attia is in the squad but unavailable for this specific match, serving a two-game AFCON suspension of which he has only served one game so far.
  • Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Abdelmonem all headline the selection and are expected to feature.
  • Abdelaziz El-Balouty returns to the goalkeeping options.

Angola have named a larger 28-man squad for these qualifiers and Cisse has no serious injury concerns heading into this one. The visitors look to have a settled group to pick from.

Predicted Lineups

Egypt look set to line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, with Shobeir between the sticks. The back four picks itself on current availability, with Hany, Rabia, Abdelmonem and Fattouh expected to provide the defensive base. Lasheen and Saber should sit in a double pivot, allowing Ashour, Salah and Ziko to operate in the three behind Marmoush as the striker. Salah drifting from his right channel will be Egypt’s biggest attacking weapon and Angola will know exactly where the danger comes from.

Angola are expected to set up with Neblu in goal and a back four of Bondo, Gaspar, Carmo and Fernando. The midfield trio of Keliano, Mukendi and Milson should give them a solid platform, with Luvumbo, Depu and Mabululu leading the attack. Luvumbo in particular is a player who can cause problems on the counter and will fancy his chances of getting behind Egypt’s full backs on the break.

Recent Form

Egypt’s recent form tells an interesting story. They reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup, took a two goal lead against Argentina and pushed one of the tournament favourites all the way before losing 3-2. That result stings, but it also shows what this side is capable of. Prior to the World Cup they finished fourth at AFCON, losing to Senegal in the semi final before going out on penalties to Nigeria in the third place playoff. There is clear quality here, but also a pattern of high profile moments where they have not quite crossed the line.

The draw tendency is worth flagging. Three of Egypt’s last five matches have ended level within 90 minutes. That is not necessarily a sign of a weak side, sometimes it just reflects a team that is difficult to beat but has not always had the cutting edge to convert dominance into wins. Hassan will want to sharpen that up in front of a home crowd that expects attacking, positive football.

Angola have been solid without being spectacular. Four games unbeaten, with one win and three draws, suggests a team that is hard to break down but perhaps lacking the firepower to regularly take three points at this level. Cisse has clearly worked on the defensive structure, and coming here to frustrate Egypt is absolutely a viable game plan for the Sable Antelopes.

Head-to-Head Record

Egypt have never lost to Angola across all eight meetings on record, which is a significant psychological edge for the hosts. However, four of those eight have ended in draws, which tells you that Angola have regularly made life uncomfortable for the Pharaohs rather than simply rolling over. The most recent AFCON group stage meeting last year finished level, making it two draws from the last two encounters between these sides.

The pattern is clear. Egypt tend to dominate possession and territory but Angola are organised, disciplined and capable of absorbing pressure. Getting the winner here will require patience from Hassan’s men, and a moment of individual quality is likely to be what separates the sides if indeed anyone separates them at all.

Key Stats

  • Egypt are unbeaten across all eight head-to-head meetings with Angola, but four of those eight have ended as draws.
  • Three of Egypt’s last five matches have ended level within 90 minutes, pointing to a pattern of tight, low-scoring affairs.
  • Angola are unbeaten in their last four fixtures, winning one and drawing three, suggesting a team built on defensive solidity rather than attacking adventure.

Egypt vs Angola Betting Tips

The head-to-head record and the recent form of both sides point firmly in one direction here. This is a match that has draw written all over it. Egypt have the better squad on paper and home advantage counts for plenty, but Angola have shown repeatedly that they will not be steamrolled. Expect a tightly contested qualifier where the goals are at a premium and where patience will be tested on both sides.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals looks the smart play here. Three of the last five meetings between these sides have ended in draws, Egypt have drawn three of their last five, and Angola are set up to be difficult to break down. Goals feel unlikely to flow freely in Cairo.

Corners Prediction

Egypt will dominate the ball at home and probe consistently, which should generate a reasonable volume of corners. Angola defending deep and ceding territory will contribute to that. Under 10 corners feels slightly generous to the over merchants here so backing over 8 corners at a minimum seems reasonable given Egypt’s expected approach play.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Mohamed Salah is the obvious pick and for good reason. He is Egypt’s most dangerous attacker, a player who consistently delivers on the biggest stages, and he will be heavily involved in everything the Pharaohs try to create going forward. His movement, his finishing and his threat from wide positions make him the standout candidate to open the scoring if this one does break.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

No is the call here. Angola are set up to frustrate and defend, and their recent form reflects a side that keeps things tight rather than trading goals. Egypt will fancy keeping a clean sheet at home. Both teams finding the net feels less likely than a narrow or blank scoreline for one of these sides.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1-0 win for Egypt feels like the most likely outcome if the hosts are going to take maximum points. Salah or Marmoush providing the moment of quality to settle a tight game, with Angola making them work for every inch but ultimately unable to find a way through the Egyptian back line. It fits the pattern of this fixture perfectly.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Egypt Win
Both Teams To Score No
First Goalscorer Mohamed Salah

All three picks reinforce the same narrative: Egypt edging a tight game with a clean sheet, and their talisman providing the moment that matters.

Final Match Prediction

Egypt 1-0 Angola is the call. The Pharaohs have too much quality at home not to find a winner eventually, and with Salah and Marmoush leading the line, there is genuine match-winning ability in this squad. But anyone expecting a cricket score will be disappointed. Angola have too much structure and too much experience of this fixture to simply fall apart.

Hassan will be satisfied with three points from what is a competitive qualifier opener. The Sable Antelopes will feel hard done by if they lose narrowly, but the Egyptian crowd and the individual quality on show should just about tip this one in the hosts’ favour.
