Who do you think will win?

There is real momentum building at Adams Park right now. Three wins on the bounce across all competitions, a manager sacked, an interim stepping up and delivering, and a striker already looking like a proper bit of business. Wycombe Wanderers are a club that has rediscovered its pulse, and Saturday gives them the chance to push further up a League One table that is still very much taking shape. For Reading, eight points clear of the promotion places with games already in hand on some clubs above them, this is a fixture they will want to win, but they arrive without three key players and facing a Wycombe side that is suddenly very difficult to beat.

Wycombe Wanderers vs Reading Match Details

This League One fixture takes place at Adams Park, Wycombe’s home ground in High Wycombe. It is one of the more intriguing third-tier matchups of the weekend, pitting a side finding its feet under new management against a Reading outfit that has genuine promotion ambitions and one of the most lethal strikers in the division in their ranks.

Team News

Wycombe have no significant injury concerns flagged heading into the weekend, which gives interim boss Tom Hounsell a full hand to pick from and every reason to stick with what has been working. Reading, though, head into this one with a notable triple absence.

  • Andy Rinomhota is away on international duty and will miss out. He has started every league game for Reading so far this season and his absence is a genuine problem in the engine room.
  • Charlie Savage and Jeriel Dorsett are also away with their respective international squads and unavailable for selection.
  • Liam Fraser is expected to step in for Rinomhota in midfield as Leam Richardson shuffles his pack.

Predicted Lineups

Hounsell has given no indication he wants to tinker with a winning formula. Jayden Wareham leads the line having already scored twice in three appearances, and the fact this is a reunion with his former club Exeter City connections aside, he is simply in too good a form to drop. Ewan Henderson and Aaron Morley are expected to anchor the midfield, with Caolan Boyd-Munce and Josh Scowen given license to press and create further forward.

For Reading, the enforced changes mean Fraser slots in alongside Wing in the centre of the park. Paddy Lane and Kyreece Lisbie provide the width, while Jack Marriott leads the attack. With eight goals in six league games, Marriott picks himself regardless of who else is missing.

  • Wycombe: Hazard; Casey, Taylor, Cook; Onyedinma, Morley, Henderson, Harvie; Scowen, Wareham, Boyd-Munce
  • Reading: Pereira; Godwin-Malife, O’Connor, Ward, Roberts; Fraser, Wing; Lisbie, Earthy, Lane; Marriott

Recent Form

Wycombe’s early season was a mess, plain and simple. Four games without a win to open the campaign and Michael Duff shown the door before the month was out. But since Hounsell stepped up on an interim basis, the Chairboys have looked like a completely different animal. A 3-2 win at Leyton Orient, then a disciplined 1-0 at Wigan, then a 2-1 victory over Chelsea Under-21s in the EFL Trophy. Three wins from three under the new gaffer, and there is a confidence about the place that simply was not there a fortnight ago. Nine points from seven league outings puts them 14th, but the direction of travel is sharply upward.

Reading’s campaign has been a bit more of a rollercoaster. They shipped four against Luton on the opening day, drew with AFC Wimbledon, then produced back-to-back emphatic wins over Mansfield and Blackpool. A 2-1 defeat at Cambridge was a bump in the road, but they responded exactly as a promotion-chasing side should, putting Notts County to the sword 2-0 last weekend with Marriott bagging both. Ten points from six games and eighth in the table. The building blocks are there, but they are not yet the fully finished article.

The number that really stands out for Reading is their attacking output. Eleven goals in their last four league matches is serious firepower, and Marriott is the engine of it all. But missing Rinomhota in the middle means there is a structural question about whether they can control the tempo of a game that Wycombe will make physically demanding. Hounsell’s side has scored in every single game they have played this season. You are not blanking these boys.

Head-to-Head Record

Wycombe and Reading have crossed paths plenty of times over the years and this tie has a habit of producing goals. Both clubs have had spells in higher divisions but familiarity at this level means neither side will carry any great psychological baggage into the fixture. What is more relevant here is that Adams Park is not an easy place to visit when Wycombe are on a run, the crowd gets behind the team and the playing surface lends itself to the direct, physical style that Hounsell will likely encourage.

Reading tend to be a difficult side to beat regardless of where they are in the league, but away from home against sides in decent form they are not impenetrable, as Cambridge showed when they took three points off them a few weeks ago.

Key Stats

  • Jack Marriott has scored eight goals in six League One appearances. He is the division’s leading scorer and by some distance.
  • Wycombe have scored in every single game they have played this season across all competitions. Their attack is functioning.
  • Reading have plundered eleven goals across their last four league outings, an average of nearly three per game.

Wycombe Wanderers vs Reading Betting Tips

This fixture has goals written all over it. You have the in-form striker in the division on one side, a Wycombe attack that cannot stop scoring on the other, and a midfield for Reading that is suddenly missing its most important piece. The conditions are set up for a proper open game at Adams Park, and I think the smart money is on both teams finding the net in what could be a high-scoring afternoon.

Corners Prediction

Reading like to play with width through Lane and Lisbie, and Wycombe will be pushing men forward with the confidence of a side on a three-game winning streak. Expect plenty of play in the wide areas and a healthy corners count. Over ten match corners is the call here.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Wycombe have scored in every game this season and Reading have averaged close to three goals per game in their last four league matches. Both squads are set up to attack and the midfield battle could be wide open given Reading’s absences. Over 2.5 goals looks very well priced and hard to argue against.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Wycombe have not kept a clean sheet at will even in their winning run, and Reading have Marriott who will sniff out any opportunity regardless of how shorthanded they are in midfield. Wycombe’s attack is in real nick too. Both teams to score looks like one of the safer calls on the card here. Yes.

Correct Score Prediction

A 2-2 draw feels like the most natural landing spot for this one. Wycombe have the crowd behind them and the momentum of a winning run, but Reading have the quality to hit back whenever they go behind. Marriott will get on the scoresheet and Wareham has the look of a player who saves his best for big occasions against familiar opponents. Goals at both ends and honours even at the final whistle.

Cards Prediction

This fixture has the ingredients for a feisty afternoon. Wycombe under Hounsell play with real intensity and will press Reading hard all over the pitch, while Richardson’s side will be frustrated if things do not go their way, especially with key personnel missing. A game producing four or more cards would not be a surprise. Back over three cards in this one.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over
Jack Marriott To Score Anytime Yes

With goals guaranteed from both ends and the division’s top scorer on the pitch, these three selections complement each other perfectly and all point to the same kind of game unfolding at Adams Park.

Final Match Prediction

Wycombe are in a rich vein of form and Adams Park will be buzzing with the energy of a club that has rediscovered its mojo. Hounsell has them playing with purpose, Wareham is a real threat up front, and the home faithful will make life difficult for Reading from the first whistle. But the Royals have a striker who can win a game on his own, and even without Rinomhota and Savage in midfield, they carry enough quality to avoid defeat on the road.

My call is 2-2. A proper Saturday afternoon League One game, end to end, with both managers probably taking a point they were not sure they would get at various moments throughout the ninety minutes. Wycombe will feel the better for it given where they were three weeks ago. Reading will already be thinking about next week.
