The tournament has had a real buzz around it this week, and with Alexandra Eala scheduled to play, that is only going to grow. Four matches to get through, four quarterfinal spots up for grabs. Here is how I see them playing out.
These two have never met before, so there is no head to head record to lean on here. Morvayova sits just inside the top 300 and brings plenty of aggression from the baseline, which will be tested on this indoor hard court. Gibson operates in a similar way, relying on heavy ball striking to overpower opponents rather than outmanoeuvre them.
The difference between them is that Gibson is the more consistent and dependable performer of the two. If Wang plays to her level and uses that serve as a weapon, Garland will struggle to stay with her for long.
Sakkari leads this head to head 2 wins to 0, and both of those wins were convincing enough to tell a clear story. Hibino likes to be the one dictating from the baseline and will come into this looking to do exactly that, but she has never been able to find a way through Sakkari in their previous encounters.
Sakkari is not the force she was a few years back when she was consistently threatening at the top of the game, but on hard courts she remains a serious competitor. Her counterpunching ability is genuinely elite. She absorbs pace brilliantly and redirects it in ways that drag opponents out of position without ever seeming rushed herself. Hibino will try to impose herself, but Sakkari knows exactly how to neutralise that kind of game. Expect the Greek to grind her way through in familiar fashion.
This is a first meeting between the two, and it is the match most people will be tuning in for. Eala has been one of the more compelling stories in women’s tennis this season. Her left handed baseline game creates angles and awkward patterns that genuinely trouble top players, and she has shown real improvement across the year. Her serve is not going to win her many free points, it is probably the weakest weapon in her top 20 arsenal, but her groundstroke quality more than compensates.
Prozorova is a steady counterpuncher who is most comfortable when operating deep in rallies and letting opponents make errors. That approach can work well against players who are erratic or impatient, but Eala is neither of those things. Her ball quality through the court should give her a clear edge in the exchanges, and if she is moving well and keeping her level consistent, Prozorova is unlikely to find many ways to hurt her.
