KuPS
TrabzonsporThere is something genuinely compelling about a Conference League opener that pitches a Finnish champion struggling for domestic form against a Turkish side who only ended up here after a hammering in Europa League qualifying. Neither team is exactly where they want to be right now, but that tension is precisely what makes this fixture worth watching. KuPS are trying to find their spark again in familiar European surroundings, while Trabzonspor arrive in Tampere with something to prove after that embarrassing exit to Ferencvaros. Both sets of supporters will be desperate for a statement result, and on paper at least, the gap in quality between the two sides makes this one of the more intriguing mismatches of the early Conference League round.
What adds another layer of interest is the setting itself. KuPS are playing away from Kuopio, using Tammelan Stadion in Tampere as their home venue for European nights, which strips away some of the familiar atmosphere they would normally lean on. For Trabzonspor, this is entirely new territory, their first ever taste of the Conference League, and how Thomas Reis sets his side up for that challenge tells you a lot about where this club sees itself right now.
This fixture takes place in Tampere, Finland, at Tammelan Stadion, with KuPS using the ground as their European home rather than their usual base in Kuopio. It is the opening match of the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League league phase for both sides, and the first competitive meeting between the two clubs in their history.
KuPS are actually in a fortunate position on the injury front heading into this one. Miika Nuutinen has a clean bill of health to work with, which gives him full flexibility in terms of selection. Trabzonspor are not so lucky, arriving with a notable chunk of their squad unavailable.
Nuutinen should name a strong side given everyone is fit, and Jaime Moreno will lead the line as the focal point of KuPS’s attack. With 11 goals across all competitions this season, Moreno is the man the hosts will build around. Expect Jyry to provide support behind him, with Armah and Touray offering width and Gasc sitting as the defensive screen in midfield.
For Trabzonspor, Reis will need to reshuffle given the suspensions and injuries. Andre Onana takes the gloves with Cevikkan out. Mohamed Salah is the obvious dangerman in the attacking midfield role, and Ernest Muci should lead the line despite the absence of Nwaiwu. Fabinho anchors the midfield with Kabasakal alongside him, while Saviolo and Franculino provide the creative thrust either side of Salah.
KuPS are in a rough patch domestically, there is no dressing it up. One win in their last seven Veikkausliiga matches is a pretty damning record for a side defending a Finnish title. That solitary victory came away to VPS, and since then they have shipped consecutive 1-0 defeats, first at home to AC Oulu and then away to Inter Turku. A team that cannot find the net at home in their domestic league is hardly an ominous proposition for a Turkish side arriving in confident mood.
Their European qualifying was no smoother either. KuPS were knocked out of Champions League qualifying by Sabah Baku and then dumped out of the Europa League qualifiers by Universitatea Craiova before eventually scraping through the Conference League playoff against Shamrock Rovers on a 2-1 aggregate. A 1-1 draw in Dublin followed by a 1-0 home win got them over the line, but nobody would call that convincing.
Trabzonspor come into this in entirely different form. Back to back wins in the Süper Lig have produced seven goals without conceding. A 4-0 dismantling of Galatasaray at home was followed by a professional 3-0 away win at Samsunspor, with Muci, Nwaiwu and Franculino all on the scoresheet in that one. The defensive solidity and attacking output over those two games suggests a side that has found genuine momentum, even if the European picture looked very different just a couple of months ago.
KuPS and Trabzonspor have never actually met before, so there is no direct head to head record to lean on here. What we do know is that KuPS have faced Turkish opposition twice previously, winning one and losing one, while Trabzonspor have played Finnish clubs twice before without losing, picking up a win and a draw. Neither record points strongly in one direction, but Trabzonspor’s unbeaten record against Finnish sides is worth a passing note.
The form book points firmly in one direction here. KuPS are struggling to score at the best of times, and now they face a Trabzonspor side full of confidence and loaded with attacking threat even without some key players. The suspended Nwaiwu will be missed, but Salah is in exceptional form and Muci and Franculino have both looked sharp. KuPS at home carry more uncertainty than usual given the unfamiliar venue and their domestic slump, and Trabzonspor look like value in most attacking markets.
Trabzonspor have the quality to win this comfortably, but KuPS will give a decent account of themselves in front of a home crowd, particularly with Moreno available and fit. A 2-1 away win feels like the most likely landing spot, with KuPS grabbing a consolation but ultimately unable to contain the Turkish side’s attacking quality across the full ninety minutes.
Given how freely Trabzonspor have been scoring recently and the fact that KuPS’s leaky defensive record leaves them exposed against quality attackers, over 2.5 goals looks like a solid call here. Three or more goals in a match involving a Turkish side averaging three and a half goals per game over their last two feels very achievable, even against a determined Finnish defence.
Mohamed Salah is the obvious pick. Ten goal involvements in eight matches is a remarkable return, and with seven of those being goals, he is clearly in the kind of form that punishes any defensive hesitation. KuPS will be wary of him, but awareness and being able to stop him are two very different things. Back Salah to open the scoring.
European nights against unfamiliar opposition can get feisty, especially when a home side is feeling the pressure of a poor run of form. KuPS will need to be combative to stay in this, and that often means a few cynical fouls to disrupt Trabzonspor on the break. Expect at least three bookings across the ninety minutes, with the KuPS defensive midfield likely to pick up at least one of them.
Trabzonspor like to get forward and ask questions from wide areas, and against a KuPS side that will likely be pressed back for long periods, the corner count should stack up nicely. Over 9.5 corners in this one is a reasonable target, with the Turkish side likely to dominate possession and territory through the second half especially.
BTTS yes gets the nod here. KuPS have Moreno in decent nick at 11 goals for the season, and they will fancy their chances of at least troubling the Trabzonspor backline on the counter. Trabzonspor will score, that feels close to certain given their recent form, but KuPS have enough individual quality up top to nick one of their own.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| First Goalscorer | Mohamed Salah |
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Total Corners | Over 9.5 |
Salah’s current form makes him a strong first goalscorer shout, BTTS reflects the attacking quality on both sides, and the corners market is backed by Trabzonspor’s wide play and the pressure they are likely to apply for long stretches of the match.
This is a tough night for KuPS in almost every sense. Their form is poor, they are playing away from their real home ground, and they are facing a Trabzonspor side that has just put seven goals past two Süper Lig opponents without reply. Nuutinen will set up to be hard to beat and rely on Moreno to take any chance that drops their way, but the gap in quality and momentum is considerable.
Trabzonspor to win 2-1. Salah and Muci to cause KuPS real problems throughout, with Moreno grabbing a goal to give the home supporters something to cheer, but the Turkish side taking three points back to Trabzon on a winning start to their first ever Conference League campaign.
