BMW PGA Championship Preview

The Back 9 reaches one of its centrepieces as the DP World Tour returns to Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship from 17 to 20 September.

The Tour’s flagship event and the third Rolex Series tournament of the 2026 season brings together one of the deepest fields of the year, with Ryder Cup names, Major champions, PGA Tour regulars and home favourites all converging on the famous Surrey venue.

Alex Norén defends the title he won in a play-off with Adrien Saddier in 2025, but with Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Reed and a host of Major winners in the field, this is about as competitive as non-major weeks get.

With generous each-way terms available in places, our tipster has landed on three selections that blend course pedigree, current form and value across the market.

Notable Former Winners

First played in 1955 and staged continuously on Wentworth’s West Course since 1984, the BMW PGA Championship has a roll of honour to match almost any regular event in world golf. Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Rory McIlroy all feature among the past champions, while the recent winners underline the quality normally required to get the job done.

Recent Champions: Alex Norén (2017 & 2025), Francesco Molinari (2018), Danny Willett (2019), Tyrrell Hatton (2020), Billy Horschel (2021 & 2024), Shane Lowry (2022) and Ryan Fox (2023), the last of whom is one of this week’s selections.

The Course: Wentworth West

The famous West Course is a par 72 measuring 7,267 yards for this year’s championship. Originally designed by Harry Colt, it has since been modernised and renovated with significant input from Ernie Els.

It remains a classic tree-lined, undulating test framed by pine, oak, birch and heathland vegetation, with demanding approaches and greens where control is vital.

The closing stretch is the signature. The 17th and 18th are back-to-back par fives capable of swinging a leaderboard late, offering birdie and eagle chances while still punishing players who lose position from the tee.

Accuracy, positioning and control into the greens are major parts of the challenge, making Wentworth a course where a complete tee-to-green game tends to travel well.

The Angle

Wentworth has repeatedly rewarded players who know how to handle it. Norén is now a two-time champion, Horschel has won twice and several other names on the roll of honour have lifted the trophy more than once. Proven course form therefore carries plenty of weight, particularly on a layout where experience of the closing stretch can be invaluable.

The roll of honour also leans heavily towards established winners, which is hardly surprising given the strength of field assembled each year. But with ten-place each-way terms available at the quoted prices, there is room to look beyond the very top of the market.

We’ve mixed a proven big-event performer with an in-form Englishman and a former Wentworth champion at a much bigger number.

The Selections

Patrick Reed: 18/1

The pick near the head of the market and a proven big-occasion player. The 2018 Masters champion has enjoyed a resurgent 2026, winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for his first Rolex Series title before adding the Qatar Masters just 14 days later. Those results helped establish him at the top of the Race to Dubai standings heading into the business end of the season.

Reed also finished T10 at the PGA Championship at Aronimink, another reminder that his game remains capable of travelling to elite fields and demanding venues.

He followed that with further strong results and arrives at Wentworth as the Race to Dubai leader. At the quoted 18/1 with ten places, his combination of current form, experience and proven ability under pressure makes him the anchor of the staking plan.

Alex Fitzpatrick: 28/1

The in-form home player. Fitzpatrick landed his maiden DP World Tour title at the 2026 Hero Indian Open after falling six shots behind during the final round, producing a brilliant birdie run to overhaul defending champion Eugenio Chacarra. A few weeks later, he and brother Matt won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on the PGA Tour.

His consistency since has been impressive. Fitzpatrick posted four further PGA Tour top tens, was T23 on his U.S. Open debut and returned to Europe with a T7 at last week’s Irish Open.

He also already owns a T17 finish from his Open Championship debut at Royal Liverpool in 2023. Sitting 19th in both the Race to Dubai and FedExCup standings recently, he arrives at Wentworth with considerably more substance behind him than simply being a promising younger brother.

Sheffield-born and playing in front of an English crowd, his accuracy, approach play and controlled style look well suited to a strategic test like Wentworth. At the quoted 28/1, there is enough current form and upward momentum to make him an appealing each-way option.

Ryan Fox: 45/1

The course-form value play, and potentially the most eye-catching of the three at the price. The New Zealander won this title in 2023 with rounds of 69, 68, 66 and 67, overcoming a three-shot final-round deficit and making birdie at the 18th to beat Tyrrell Hatton and Aaron Rai by one. He has already proved he can close the deal on the West Course.

More importantly, Fox returns as a Major champion. He won the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale with a birdie on the 72nd hole, finishing one shot clear of Cameron Young.

His third-round 62 tied the lowest 18-hole score ever recorded at The Open. Add two PGA Tour victories in 2025, the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic and RBC Canadian Open, and his recent résumé is considerably stronger than when he won here three years ago.

At the quoted 45/1 with ten places, a former Wentworth champion who has since added a Claret Jug and two PGA Tour titles has an obvious each-way case.
