Carlisle Racecourse is one of the oldest racecourses in the UK and is located in the village of Blackwell which is just outside of Carlisle in Cumbria. The course was previously located at The Swifts which is more towards the centre of Carlise but was moved to its present site in 1904.
Carlise hosts flat racing throughout the summer and National Hunt racing during the winter months.
It is just one of two racecourses in Cumbria with the other being Cartmel.

Carlisle Racecourse
Carlise Racecourse is right-handed, pear-shaped and 12 furlongs around.
The going can get very heavy in wetter weather with jockeys often taking the wide route coming into the home straight to run on better ground.
There is a steep incline for the last half mile and the fences on the jumps course are known as being easy.
Carlisle Feature Races
The most prestigious race to take place annually at Carlisle Racecourse is the Carlisle Bell which is one of the oldest horse races in existence. It is held in June alongside the Cumberland Plate and run over a distance of 7 furlongs and 173 yards.
The Eternal Stakes, which was introduced in 2003, is another popular race at Carlisle that also takes place in June along with the National Hunt Listed races, the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase in November and the Houghton Mares’ Chase in December.
