Exeter Racecourse, also known as Haldon racecourse to the locals, is situated in Haldon Hills of Exeter, Devon.

The course is believed to be one of the oldest in the country and is currently one of 15 racecourses nationwide that is owned and operated by the Jockey Club.

Exeter hosts 17 jumps fixtures throughout the year as well as several non-horse racing events such as charity nights, live music days and private functions.

It is an extremely popular racecourse due to the scenic views, first-class hospitality and relaxed atmosphere that can be enjoyed by seasoned racegoers and families.

Exeter Racecourse

Exeter Racecourse is the highest in the UK and suits galloping types due to its hilly nature.

It is a right-handed oval-shaped track that was, up until the 1850s, 2 miles around, but a flat track was added to take its distance to 3 miles.

The hurdles course runs on the inside of the track and the chase course on the outside.

Horses with stamina tend to do better at Exeter due to the stiff uphill climb to the finish.

Exeter Feature Races

The biggest race to take place at Exeter each year is the Haldon Cup which gained somewhat unwanted headlines in 2005 when the three-time winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Best Mate, collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack during the race.

The Haldon Cup takes place in October/November annually and run over a distance of about 2 miles and 1½ furlongs.

• Right-handed, undulating
• Halden Gold Cup hcap chase in October/November the big race
• Can be very testing when wet
• Bryan Carver with a 21% strike-rate (12/56) including winners at 16/1 (twice), 12/1 (twice) and 20/1 respected. Small sample size but 2/3 with 12/1 and 6/1 winners for Ron Hodges
