Day 1 of the WTA Korea Open in Seoul brings some genuinely interesting first round action, with former finalists Magda Linette and Yue Yuan both taking to the court. There is real opportunity here for some of the tour’s younger names to make their mark with the top tier of the draw largely absent this week.

Alina Korneeva vs Mananchaya Sawangkaew

Korneeva leads their head to head by one match to nil, but this is far from a straightforward assignment for the Russian. She had to withdraw from Cincinnati with injury but showed her resilience by returning for the US Open, where she pushed Madison Keys hard across two closely contested sets. That kind of gutsy performance tells you the quality is there, but the fitness question lingers.

Sawangkaew has had a genuinely impressive season. She claimed the biggest title of her career in Mumbai and added two more ITF crowns to break into the top 100, which is no small achievement. What makes her particularly awkward to face is her movement. She retrieves brilliantly and can drag opponents into long rallies that erode both confidence and legs. If she gets into those defensive patterns and keeps the ball in play, she has every chance of frustrating Korneeva into errors.

Korneeva’s patience will be tested throughout, and I am not convinced she has the consistency right now to grind this one out.

Katie Volynets vs Elvina Kalieva

These two have not met before, and on paper it looks a relatively open contest. Kalieva has been building nicely and her run to a first WTA semifinal in Memphis showed she can perform on the big stage when given the opportunity. With so many top players absent from Seoul, the 23 year old will see this week as a genuine chance to go further and collect some important ranking points.

That said, Volynets arrives in strong form herself. She won the Philadelphia 125K event in the build up to the US Open, which is never an easy week to get through, and she was simply unfortunate to draw Linda Noskova in round one in New York. That kind of draw does not reflect poorly on her at all. Volynets has been playing with real conviction from the baseline and her offensive game, when it is clicking, is difficult to handle at this level.

Between the two, Volynets has the higher floor right now and the greater comfort with winning matches in tour conditions. If she brings her aggressive best, I see her coming through without too much drama.

Yue Yuan vs Back Da-yeon

Yuan reached the Seoul final back in 2023 and comes in as the higher ranked player, but the rankings do not tell anything close to the full story here. Back Da-yeon is a South Korean playing in front of her home crowd in Seoul, which is an enormous factor at an event like this, and she arrives with a remarkable hard court record this season of 27 wins from 36 matches. That kind of consistency on the surface cannot be ignored.

Da-yeon has also already shown she can cause upsets at this tournament, having beaten Jelena Ostapenko here previously. Yuan will need to impose herself quickly before the atmosphere and the occasion lift her opponent even further. The crowd factor combined with Da-yeon’s form on hard courts makes this genuinely tricky for the Chinese player.

I am siding with the local favourite here.

Magda Linette vs Darya Astakhova

Linette has history in Seoul. She reached the final on her very first appearance at this event back in 2019, losing to Karolina Muchova, and returned for another deep run before falling to Emma Raducanu at the quarterfinal stage. She knows this tournament, knows these courts, and that experience counts for something when the pressure builds.

Astakhova is 24 and will be making her WTA main draw debut here after coming through qualifying with wins over Haruka Kaji and Alexandra Shubladze. Those were encouraging performances and she clearly has some form going into the week. However, her only match this month before qualifying was a three set defeat to Francisca Jones at the US Open, so the level of her preparation against proper opposition is a concern.

There is a world of difference between qualifying matches and facing a seasoned tour professional with Linette’s Grand Slam pedigree. The Pole may have had an extended break from tour action, but sometimes that rest is exactly what a player needs to reset and rediscover their best tennis. Linette’s experience should prove decisive.
