Day two in Hangzhou brings some genuinely intriguing first round action, with the Asian swing doing what it does best and throwing up a card full of young, hungry players who all have something to prove. The new generation is very much front and centre here, with seeds Jaime Faria and Adolfo Daniel Vallejo both expected to make their presence felt, while a French stylist and a reliable Australian complete what shapes up as a compelling afternoon and evening of tennis.
Atmane holds the head to head advantage, leading one match to nil, and on his day the big left handed Frenchman is a real handful on hard courts. His flat serve and aggressive ball striking caused Alexander Zverev all sorts of problems in Cincinnati, and he picked off a couple of seeds there before things went badly wrong at the US Open, where cramping allowed Jaume Munar to claw back from two sets down and take the match. That physical vulnerability is the elephant in the room whenever Atmane plays, and it is not something he has clearly resolved.
Faria arrives in Hangzhou as the seventh seed and with a decent run of form behind him. He pushed Carlos Alcaraz to a set at the US Open and worked his way through qualifying into the last sixteen in Cincinnati, which tells you his level has been consistently competitive. His two handed backhand is a proper weapon and he applies serious pressure on return. Given that Atmane’s fitness cannot be fully trusted over three sets, Faria looks well placed to overturn that head to head deficit.
These two have not met before, so there is no head to head history to lean on. What we do know is that Vallejo has had a genuinely impressive season. The Paraguayan fifth seed has put together a career best run of results through the summer, playing front foot aggressive tennis that looks entirely natural at this level. He is not here to make up the numbers.
Jie Cui comes in as a home wildcard and that crowd support is a real factor, particularly in China where home players tend to feed off the atmosphere in a way that can unsettle opponents. That said, the gap between these two in terms of ranking, consistency and experience at this level is significant. Vallejo’s ability to dictate from the baseline with power and depth should give him control of most rallies, and if his serve fires he could move through this one without too many alarms.
Gaston leads their head to head one match to nil, and this is the most stylistically fascinating contest of the day. Shimabukuro is the consummate grinder, an elite mover who retrieves everything, keeps the ball in play relentlessly, and waits for opponents to make mistakes. He is deeply difficult to put away and his ranking reflects just how effective that approach is at tour level.
Gaston, meanwhile, plays a completely different brand of tennis. Drop shots from impossible positions, wicked slice angles, touches and tricks that no one else on tour would even attempt. When he is feeling good and the ideas are flowing, he is one of the most watchable players out there. The trouble is sustaining that creative intensity for the duration of a best of three against someone as disciplined and fit as Shimabukuro. Gaston can produce stretches of brilliance but Shimabukuro’s game is specifically designed to outlast players who rely on inspiration rather than structure. Expect a fascinating contest but ultimately a victory for the more reliable of the two.
Hijikata leads their head to head two matches to nil and that record reflects a genuine edge in this matchup. The Australian has quietly established himself as one of the most reliable performers on the Asian swing, with his speed around the court, solid return game and mental resilience making him a difficult proposition for anyone at this time of year. He forces errors and makes opponents win points the hard way.
Svrcina has earned his place in the main draw through qualifying, and there is no question the young Czech can strike the ball cleanly when things are going his way. But transitioning from qualifying wins into a best of three against a seasoned top one hundred player with two wins over you already is a steep ask. Hijikata knows how to manage tight matches and his experience in this part of the season gives him a clear edge. Svrcina will push him but should not be able to sustain it over the distance.
