Set at the Maze, a few miles outside Lisburn and about 15 to 20 minutes' drive from Belfast, the course stages Flat and National Hunt racing. Its biggest occasion is the two-day Festival of Racing at the end of October, which features a Grade 1 Champion Chase. Boxing Day racing and the May Day student races are also among the busiest days of the year.

Down Royal race results are added as each race is settled, and tomorrow's Down Royal race card appears once declarations close.

If you're looking for Down Royal racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:
The Down Royal race course is a right-handed, roughly square track. The Flat circuit is just under two miles round, and the chase course runs on the wide outside at about one mile and seven furlongs. Most of the final mile is undulating, and the run-in rises slightly to the finish.
Over jumps, there are ten fences per circuit, four of them in the last half mile. The run-in after the final fence is less than a furlong in chases. Two-mile hurdle races start beyond the last fence, which gives them a run-in of more than a furlong and a half. Down Royal is generally seen as a fair, galloping track, where horses can win from any realistic position.
On the Flat, a low draw is a big help in five-furlong sprints because of the bend near the start. On the round course, the draw matters less than pace and position, since there's a lot of turning and plenty of time for the field to sort itself out. Over jumps, there's no draw, and there's little sign of any positional bias.
The ground at Down Royal is usually good or good to yielding during the summer Flat meetings. By the end of October it's often yielding or soft, and the Boxing Day meeting can be run on heavy ground.
The Festival of Racing is held over two days at the end of October or the start of November, and it's the biggest meeting of the year at Down Royal. On the Saturday, which is also Ladies Day, the feature race is the Grade 1 Champion Chase over three miles. It's one of the first big chances of the season to see the leading staying chasers.
From 2026, the race is known as the BetVictor Remembering Envoi Allen Champion Chase, in tribute to the course's most famous recent horse. Envoi Allen ran seven times at Down Royal and won the Champion Chase three times, in 2022, 2024 and 2025, before he died at Cheltenham earlier in 2026.
Down Royal's roots go back to 1685, when King James II granted a Royal Charter creating the Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders. Racing has taken place at the Maze since the early 18th century, on land donated by Arthur Hill, the 1st Marquess of Downshire. In 1750, King George II gave £100 to run a King's Plate, a tradition that continues today as His Majesty's Plate.
The Corporation ran the course until the end of 2018, when Merrion Property Group took over after talks brokered by Horse Racing Ireland. The first meeting under the new owners was held in January 2019. Although Down Royal is in Northern Ireland, it's governed by Horse Racing Ireland, because racing on the island is run on an all-Ireland basis.
Down Royal Racecourse is at the Maze, near Lisburn, BT27 5RW. It's about 15 to 20 minutes' drive from Belfast city centre, and parking is free at most meetings. On Festival days, the car parks can fill up by late morning.
The nearest train station is Lisburn, about five to six miles away, which has direct trains from Belfast. A taxi from Lisburn takes 12 to 15 minutes, and Translink Metro buses also run from the Europa Buscentre in Belfast.
Down Royal races tickets can be bought online, and it's best to book ahead for the Festival and Boxing Day. Under-14s go free at the Festival. There's no strict dress code, so smart casual is fine, although many racegoers dress up for Ladies Day on the Festival Saturday.
Every Down Royal meeting is shown live on Racing TV, which covers all Irish racing in the UK and Ireland. Many bookmakers also let customers watch Down Royal racing online through free live streams if they have a funded account or have placed a bet.
All the major UK and Irish bookmakers price up every race at Down Royal. Look for Best Odds Guaranteed on Irish racing, extra places on the big handicaps at the Festival, and early prices on the Champion Chase, which often has a big influence on the ante-post markets for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
