Back in 2010, Bournemouth were playing football in League Two but have managed to climb their way to the top of the English football leagues with much of the credit going to ex-manager Eddie Howe.
Howe took Bournemouth from League One, all the way to the Premier League and managed to keep them there for five consecutive seasons before they were relegated to the Championship. Their highest finish in the Premier League was 9th back in 2016/17 but they have mostly struggled in the top-flight and it once again seems the case this season following their return to England’s top league last year.
Just as there is pressure on managers at the top clubs to perform, managers at clubs aiming for survival is equally as harsh. Should Bournemouth fail to remain as a Premier League club, it would be no surprise to see a change in management and with the Cherries struggling this season, the search is already on for the next manager of A.F.C Bournemouth.
Current Bournemouth Manager
Gary O’Neil is a former professional football player and the current manager of Premier League club A.F.C Bournemouth. He was born on May 18, 1983, in Beckenham, England.
As a player, O’Neil was primarily a midfielder who could play in a variety of positions, including central midfield, wide midfield, and right-back. He began his career at Portsmouth in 2000 and went on to play for a number of other English clubs, including Middlesbrough, West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, Norwich City, and Bristol City.
During his playing career, O’Neil made over 500 appearances and scored 47 goals. He also represented England at under-16, under-19, under-20, and under-21 levels.
After retiring from playing in 2020, O’Neil transitioned into coaching and management.
His first role was as assistant manager of Liverpool’s under-23 squad in 2020. He progressed as senior first team coach of Bournemouth in August 2021 following the appointment of Jonathan Woodgate as manager and took charge of the team in a leading role, first as a caretaker in August 2022 and then on a permanent contract in November of the same year.
Who Will Be the Next Bournemouth Manager?
After spending two seasons in the Championship following being relegated from the top-flight at the end of the 2019/20 season, Bournemouth’s first season back in the Premier League hasn’t gone as planned. They have struggled throughout the season and have battled at the bottom of the table throughout to remain a PL club next season.
Gary O’Neil’s name has been included in the Premier League Sack Race list for quite some time now and several names have been brought up as possible replacements for the coach who may not last a full season with the Cherries.
