Who do you think will win?

Bayern Munich have been doing what Bayern Munich do, grinding out wins and sitting pretty near the top of the Bundesliga. Vincent Kompany has them unbeaten through the opening weeks of the 2026/27 campaign, though if you have been watching closely you will know the performances have not always matched the results. There is a bit of a gap between the xG numbers and the actual comfort levels, and fans are starting to notice. Union Berlin, on the other hand, are a club in genuine trouble. Mauro Lustrinelli has started his tenure in the worst possible way, and the defeat at home to Schalke last time out was the kind of result that gets gaffers sacked before the clocks go back.

On paper this looks like a mismatch, and in most ways it is. But football has a habit of producing something unexpected when one side has nothing to lose and the other has something to prove beyond just getting the three points.

Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin Match Details

This Bundesliga fixture takes place at the Allianz Arena in Munich, one of the most intimidating venues in European football when the home side are rolling. Bayern are currently fourth in the table with seven points and know a win here puts them right back in the conversation for top spot. For Union, who are sitting in the relegation places with just a single league point to their name, this is exactly the kind of fixture they do not need right now.

Team News

Bayern are relatively well stocked, which is bad news for the visitors. Union, by contrast, are dealing with an injury list that reads like a medical report from a cup run that got out of hand.

  • Tarek Buchmann is out for Bayern after surgery on a syndesmosis injury, but Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano are available to partner in central defence
  • Union are without right back Josip Juranovic, left back Andrik Markgraf, and centre backs Marvin Friedrich and Stanley N’Soki
  • Strikers Andrej Ilic and Oliver Burke are both ruled out for the visitors, with Burke edging closer to a return from an Achilles problem
  • Winger Kastriot Imeri is a doubt for Union with a thigh issue

Predicted Lineups

Kompany is likely to stick with the shape and the personnel that have served him well so far. Tah and Upamecano at the back give him real quality in the air and on the ball, with Laimer and Davies providing width from full back. Pavlovic and Kimmich anchor the midfield, and the creative trident of Olise, Musiala and Diaz behind Harry Kane is about as strong an attacking unit as you will find in European football right now.

Lustrinelli has far fewer options. He will probably line up with Felix Uduokhai and Leopold Querfeld making up a makeshift centre back pairing, Christopher Trimmel and Tom Rothe providing cover at full back, and Emmanuel Latte Lath leading the line alongside Jeong Woo-yeong. Michel Aebischer and Livan Burcu are expected to operate from wide positions, with Sven Khedira and Rani Kemlein in the engine room.

  • Bayern Munich: Neuer; Laimer, Tah, Upamecano, Davies; Pavlovic, Kimmich; Olise, Musiala, Diaz; Kane
  • Union Berlin: Ronnow; Trimmel, Uduokhai, Querfeld, Rothe; Aebischer, Khedira, Kemlein, Burcu; Latte Lath, Jeong

Recent Form

Bayern have been winning without always convincing. The 2-1 victory over newly promoted Elversberg at the weekend was typical of where they are right now. They had 72 percent of the ball, created nearly three expected goals worth of chances, and still needed a Harry Kane intervention to rescue the points after being pegged back to 1-1. Before that there was a 0-0 draw with Schalke, which again is not the kind of scoreline you expect from a side with Bayern’s firepower. Two wins and a draw from three Bundesliga games is a fine return, but the performances have left room for questions.

Union have had a nightmarish start by comparison. They opened their competitive campaign with a solid 4-2 DFB-Pokal win over Braunschweig and then showed real character to draw 3-3 with Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening Bundesliga weekend. That result felt like a platform to build on. Instead they were taken apart 4-0 by Bayer Leverkusen on September 5, and then last weekend lost 3-1 at home to Schalke, which is a result that really stings. One point from three league games and already in the bottom three, with a trip to the Allianz Arena to come. The timing could not be worse.

The contrast in momentum heading into this game could hardly be starker. Bayern are building towards something even if the polish is not quite there yet. Union are trying to stop the rot before it sets in permanently.

Head-to-Head Record

Union Berlin have not beaten Bayern Munich at all this decade, and that is a sobering fact for anyone thinking about backing the visitors to cause an upset. When you look at the last five meetings, though, you do find two draws in there, which tells you Union are capable of making life awkward and keeping things tight even against the big clubs. Die Eisernen are not a side that simply rolls over, or at least they have not been historically. Whether the current squad, missing four defenders and two strikers, can produce that same level of doggedness is a different question entirely.

Key Stats

  • Bayern generated 2.83 expected goals against Elversberg last weekend but only won 2-1, suggesting their clinical edge is not quite where it needs to be
  • Union have conceded seven goals in their last two Bundesliga fixtures, shipping four to Leverkusen and three to Schalke
  • Die Eisernen have just one point from three league games and have not beaten Bayern this decade

Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin Betting Tips

The angle here is reasonably clear. Bayern should win this comfortably, and the Union defensive injury crisis makes it hard to argue against the hosts finding the net multiple times. The one caveat worth keeping in mind is that Bayern have shown a tendency to create without finishing emphatically, which keeps a backdoor open for Union to grab something. The 3-1 scoreline feels about right for how these two are set up right now.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Harry Kane is the obvious call and for good reason. He has already been the man to make the difference for Bayern this season, and with Union’s makeshift back line missing four recognised defenders, Kane will fancy his chances against a centre back pairing that has barely played together. He leads the line brilliantly in these big home games and is always in the right place when chances arrive.

Cards Prediction

Union are going to have to defend deep and work extremely hard to keep Bayern at bay, and that kind of rearguard action under sustained pressure tends to produce bookings. Expect a couple of yellow cards from the visitors as they try to slow Bayern down and protect their penalty box, with midfield the most likely area for cynical fouls when Bayern break on the counter.

Corners Prediction

With Bayern dominating possession and constantly attacking from wide areas through Davies and Laimer, and with creative players like Olise and Diaz cutting in from the flanks, corners should be plentiful. Union will be deep and compact, which means Bayern will be forcing them back and winning set pieces regularly. Going over on the corners market looks like solid value here.

Correct Score Prediction

The 3-1 scoreline feels like a genuine reflection of where these two sides are. Bayern have enough quality to score multiple times even when not at their sharpest, and Union have shown in recent weeks that they are capable of getting something going forward even in defeats. A consolation for the visitors looks plausible, but three goals for the hosts is a reasonable expectation given how open the Union defence is right now.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals looks like the play. Bayern are at home, Union are leaking goals for fun, and even in games where the Bavarians have not been at full throttle this season there have been goals at both ends. Both teams to score is worth a look as well given that Union have scored in all but one of their recent matches and Bayern’s backline, while solid, is not completely watertight at the moment.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Harry Kane
Both Teams to Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over

Kane scoring, goals at both ends, and a match total above 2.5 all point in the same direction given Bayern’s attacking quality and Union’s defensive injury problems, making these three selections complement each other nicely.

Final Match Prediction

Bayern Munich win this, and probably with a degree of comfort. The Allianz Arena is not the place you want to visit when your back four is in tatters and your strikers are on the treatment table. Lustrinelli will set his side up to be hard to break down, but Bayern have too much quality across the pitch, and Kane in particular will be licking his lips at the prospect of going up against that makeshift Union defence.

The one thing worth watching is whether Bayern produce the dominant, convincing performance their fans are after, or whether they again look a touch scrappy despite getting the result. Either way, the scoreline should read Bayern Munich 3-1 Union Berlin by the end of the night.
