Who do you think will win?

Lincoln City have done well to sit 15th in the Championship after nine games of their first season in the second tier for more than 60 years. Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw deserve real credit for that. But back to back defeats heading into this one, conceding five goals across those two games, tells you the Imps are in a difficult spell at exactly the wrong moment. West Ham are walking through the door.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have hit a wobble of their own, no win in three across all competitions after what looked like it could be a title charge building. But here is the thing about West Ham. They have the best attack in the Championship. Twenty three goals from nine league games. That firepower does not disappear just because they have drawn a couple and gone out of the cup.

Lincoln City vs West Ham United Match Details

This one takes place at Sincil Bank in the Championship, a ground that has seen League One football for most of the past two decades. It is only the second time these two clubs have met in a league fixture since 1957, which makes it a historic occasion for Lincoln regardless of the result. West Ham will not be treating it as a novelty.

Team News

Lincoln look set to ring the changes after back to back heavy defeats, and there are a few selection headaches worth keeping an eye on ahead of this one.

  • Yunus Konak, Chiedozie Ogbene and Mikkel Ladefoged are all pushing for starts in midfield and the final third
  • Conor McGrandles, Ben House and Freddie Draper may all drop out after the 3-0 loss at Sheffield United
  • Reece Hackett could return to contention after missing time through concussion
  • Andrei Coubis is a doubt after the international break
  • For West Ham, Mohamadou Kante is back available after serving a one match ban but may start on the bench
  • Tomas Soucek is being assessed after returning from a long term injury on Friday
  • Joel Piroe could come in if Soucek is not fit to start
  • Joel Veltman is an option to return after recovering from injury during the break

Predicted Lineups

Lincoln are likely to line up with Wickens in goal, a back three of Bradley, Elerewe and Towler, with Jefferies and Reach providing the width. Konak and Bayliss look set to anchor the midfield, with Ogbene adding some pace in behind Ladefoged and Street.

West Ham will probably go with Hermansen between the sticks, Veltman and Morato as the fullbacks, Mavropanos and Kilman at the heart of it. Mukasa and Engels hold the midfield, with Bowen, Piroe and Solomon supporting Castellanos up top. Nuno has plenty of options off the bench too, with Kante ready to come on if needed.

Recent Form

Lincoln had given every reason for optimism through the opening weeks of the campaign. Away wins at Preston and Bristol City showed genuine quality and a willingness to go and get results on the road. Eleven points from nine games in your first Championship season in over 60 years is a decent platform. But the last two fixtures have put a dent in that confidence. A 2-1 home loss to Swansea was bad enough, but following it up with a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United is the sort of run that gets managers nervous. This is the second time already this season that Lincoln have lost back to back games, and that is a pattern they cannot afford to let become a habit.

West Ham are in a strange place form wise. They put six past Wrexham back in September and looked like they were going to steam roll the division. Since then they have lost to Fulham in the cup and drawn against Millwall and QPR in the league, missing a late penalty through Jarrod Bowen against the Rs to deny themselves three points. Two comebacks from losing positions in that run tells you the mentality is still there. The quality is not in question either, 23 goals scored in nine Championship games is comfortably the best in the division. They are four points off the top and still very much in the conversation for a title push.

What strikes me most is the contrast in trajectory. Lincoln are dipping at the wrong time. West Ham are a side that looks like it needs a performance to get itself back on track, and a trip to a struggling Championship newcomer looks like exactly the kind of fixture to provide it.

Head-to-Head Record

This is genuinely unusual territory. The last competitive league meeting between these clubs was back in 1957, which puts into perspective just how different the football worlds these two clubs have inhabited over the past six decades. There is no recent head to head record to draw on in the traditional sense, no venue trends, no patterns to lean on. What we do know is that when sides at different ends of the quality spectrum meet in the Championship, the gulf tends to show. West Ham are operating at a level above Lincoln right now, and the lack of a recent head to head means neither team can lean on psychological history going into this one.

Key Stats

  • West Ham have scored 23 goals in nine Championship games, the most of any side in the division
  • Lincoln have lost four of their last five games across all competitions and conceded eight in their last two
  • West Ham have only one defeat from nine Championship fixtures despite their recent dip in form

Lincoln City vs West Ham United Betting Tips

The angle here is pretty clear. West Ham need a response, they have the firepower to deliver one, and Lincoln are leaking goals at a worrying rate. This sets up nicely as a game where the Hammers get back to winning ways with something to spare. The goals market looks particularly attractive in this one.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

With West Ham averaging well over two goals per game and Lincoln shipping freely in recent weeks, over 2.5 goals feels like the comfortable call here. The Imps will not go quietly, but their defensive record in the last two games makes this a fixture that should have goals at both ends and plenty of them.

Corners Prediction

West Ham’s front line is aggressive and direct, and Lincoln will be forced into a defensive shape for large portions of this game. That should generate a healthy number of corners for the Hammers alone. Factor in Lincoln trying to get forward on the counter and you would expect this to be a game with over nine corners at a minimum.

Cards Prediction

Lincoln are going to have to be physical to stay in this one, and there will be moments of frustration as West Ham’s quality starts to show. I would expect at least three bookings across the 90 minutes, with Lincoln’s midfield likely to pick up a couple as they try to stop Nuno’s side from running riot.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1-3 West Ham win feels right to me. Lincoln have enough about them to nick one, as they have shown against better sides this season, but West Ham’s attacking quality will ultimately prove too much for a Lincoln side that has conceded five goals in its last two outings.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Tomas Castellanos is the tip here. The striker has been leading the line well for West Ham and in a game where the Hammers should be getting forward early and often, the centre forward looks like a smart shout to open the scoring. If Castellanos starts, he is worth a look at anytime scorer as well as first goalscorer.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result West Ham United to Win
Over / Under Goals Over 2.5 Goals
First Goalscorer Tomas Castellanos

A West Ham win in a game with goals flowing and Castellanos on the scoresheet ties together everything we know about this fixture and gives the bet builder real substance.

Final Match Prediction

Lincoln City have been a genuinely pleasant surprise in the Championship this season, but this feels like a test too far at this particular moment. Two heavy defeats on the bounce, a leaky defence and a squad still adapting to life in the second tier means the Imps are vulnerable to a West Ham side that has been quietly building an outstanding attacking record despite their recent wobble.

Nuno’s men will see this as the ideal opportunity to rediscover their winning touch. The quality in that forward line, Bowen, Castellanos, Solomon, is simply above what Lincoln can deal with right now, and I expect West Ham to win this comfortably. Lincoln 1 West Ham 3.
