BresBet and Bet St George have stopped operating in Great Britain after the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) suspended their licences and the companies subsequently chose to hand them back altogether. The closures leave thousands of account holders wondering what happens now to their balances and open bets.
The UKGC suspended the operating licences of BresBet Ltd and Bet St George Ltd with effect from August 28, 2026. The regulator said that the enforcement came from suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings at both operators. Both platforms have connections to the Brereton family.
The regulator opened a review of both licences using its powers under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005. The suspensions themselves didn’t stop customers from accessing their accounts or withdrawing funds. The UKGC explicitly said that both businesses were expected to treat customers fairly and keep them informed of developments.
The situation escalated late on September 5, when the Breretons told the UKGC they wanted to surrender the licences of both brands. The regulator confirmed the surrender in an update, adding that both operators are expected to take all necessary steps to ensure that consumers aren’t unnecessarily disadvantaged.
BresBet and Bet St George both confirmed account holders by email that they had decided to cease operating.
The two brands are sending slightly different messages depending on whether you have money in your account or not. It’s worth checking for email correspondence and not relying on what someone else received.
BresBet’s email to customers with little or no money in their accounts said that £1 is the minimum the company is able to refund. Anything less and there’s nothing the customer needs to do. If anyone believes there has been a mistake and that they are owed funds should email the operator at [email protected]
The email from Bet St George followed the same structure. It confirmed the licence suspensions and the decisions to stop operating. Any customers with an account balance need to email [email protected], with the message setting a deadline of September 30, 2026 for all claims. It’s important that you don’t wait before submitting your request.
The messier issue and the one generating the most frustration online concerns bets that were already placed when trading stopped. Early last week, BresBet posted on X to reassure customers that bets already placed would stand and settle as normal.
However, punters on X have explained in recent days that the open bets were voided once the company confirmed it was ceasing trading. That means people will get their original stake back, but they won’t get a payout at the agreed-upon odds if their selection ultimately succeeds.
BresBet first launched in 2021 as a white-label operation before obtaining its own operating licence in 2025. Nic Brereton pitched the brand as all about top service, saying its unique selling point was “to treat customers exceptionally well,” and that improvements in compliance, customer service, and trading would be achieved by moving these functions in-house.
The bookmaker also started becoming a visible presence in racing, including being the lead sponsor of trainer Fergal O’Brien’s Gloucestershire stable. Bet St George was a much newer venture, as it only launched in March 2026 with a stated focus on the biggest UK sporting occasions.
A UK-licensed bookmaker walking away from the market is relatively unusual, but not unheard of. Stake.com surrendered its UK licence in 2025 due to allegations over its social media activity and white label operator TGP Europe exited after being issued a £3.3 million fine. Vbet closed its UK business last year, while MansionBet, Novibet, and BetBull all surrendered UK licences in recent times to concentrate on other markets.
Anyone who held an account with either BresBet or Bet St George should act now and not wait any longer. Log the balance you believe you are owed, email the relevant support address, and make any claim before September 30, 2026.
Keep written records of your screenshots and any relevant details you can still access, and escalate any remaining issues. The regulator has been clear that customers should not be left unnecessarily disadvantaged, but it’s up to customers to chase what they’re owed before the window closes.
