There is something fascinating about a cup tie between two clubs heading in very different directions. Manchester United are scratching their heads after a dreadful start to the Premier League season, already looking up at the top of the table from a considerable distance. For Brighton, it is an opportunity to heap more misery on a club that is visibly struggling under Michael Carrick. The neutral just wants goals and a bit of drama. Manchester United’s start to the season has been genuinely poor. One win from four Premier League games, seven goals conceded, not a single clean sheet, and already eight points behind Arsenal and Man City. The derby defeat summed up a lot of what has gone wrong. United had a man advantage for over an hour after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, and they created almost nothing from it. Gianluigi Donnarumma was barely tested, making just one meaningful save deep into stoppage time. Even with the controversy of Haaland’s winner being allowed to stand despite Enzo Fernandez appearing to interfere from an offside position, United had every opportunity to at least get something from the game and could not take it. That is a pattern that has repeated itself far too often already this campaign.
Brighton are a completely different story. Thirteen Premier League goals in four games is the most they have ever scored at this stage in any of their 14 top flight seasons. The 5-0 dismantling of Coventry was a proper statement, with five different scorers and Bart Verbruggen picking up Man of the Match despite being on the winning side, which tells you something about how the game was played. Hurzeler has this team playing with real purpose and cohesion, and they look genuinely dangerous from multiple areas of the pitch. The only slight caveat is that they have shipped goals themselves, and their upcoming run of fixtures includes a home game against Arsenal, so there is still pressure on them to prove they can perform against the genuine top sides.
In cup terms, United’s recent record makes grim reading. Their second round exit to Grimsby last season was a low point even by recent standards, and they have not gone deep in this competition for a few years despite winning it as recently as 2022 to 2023. Brighton’s EFL Cup record is historically poor, having reached the last eight just once, and they have been knocked out in round four in five of the last six seasons. Something has to give in terms of cup form for one of these sides.
Brighton have won seven of the last 11 meetings between these two sides across all competitions, and they have scored at least two goals in six of those seven wins. What makes it even more striking for United supporters is that four of those Brighton victories came at Old Trafford, which completely dismantles any idea of home advantage providing much comfort. United did beat Brighton 3-0 on the final day of last season, and they were on the wrong end of a 2-1 home defeat to the Seagulls in the FA Cup back in January, so the cup record specifically is not kind to the hosts either.
A win for United here would give them back to back victories over Brighton for the first time since February 2022, which shows just how the dynamic between these clubs has shifted in recent seasons. Hurzeler’s side will arrive at Old Trafford with no fear whatsoever.
United need a reaction but their underlying performance levels have been so short of what is required that backing them with any real conviction feels like wishful thinking. Brighton have momentum, genuine attacking threat from multiple sources, and a head to head record at Old Trafford that demands respect. The smarter money is on the Seagulls to cause problems, and there is value in leaning towards goals at both ends given how open United have been and how freely Brighton are scoring.
Brighton look capable of getting at this United defence, but the hosts will surely be more motivated in a cup tie at home. A 2-1 away win feels right given how the form lines and the head to head record stack up, with Brighton nicking it in a game that has a goal or two in it.
With Brighton likely to dominate the ball and push United back into their own half for large stretches, and with United needing to throw men forward as the game develops, a high corners count looks likely. Going over 10 corners in this one appeals, given how both sides play and how much pressure Brighton tend to generate when they are in full flow.

Pascal Gross is the obvious shout. He has scored more goals against Manchester United than against any other opponent in his entire career, seven in total, and he was in outstanding form against Coventry with a goal and two assists. The 35-year-old knows exactly how to hurt this United side and at Old Trafford specifically, and if he starts he has to be right near the top of the first scorer market.
United are likely to be frustrated as the game develops, especially if Brighton get an early goal, and that frustration tends to manifest in rash challenges. With Carrick’s side under pressure and Brighton’s quick transitions likely to expose the hosts on the counter, there should be a card or two for United midfielders who are stretched. Over 3.5 cards looks reasonable in what could become a spiky affair.
Over 2.5 goals feels like the standout call here. United cannot keep teams out at the moment, Brighton are the highest scorers in the Premier League after four games, and both sides have genuine reason to go after this game. A low scoring cup bore draw simply does not fit the profile of either team right now.
