Who do you think will win?

Tottenham Hotspur have played four Premier League matches in the 2026/27 season and have not scored a single goal. Not one. In any other era, that stat alone would feel like a glitch in the matrix, but this is where Spurs find themselves right now, rock bottom of the form table and arriving at Anfield without a shred of momentum behind them. Meanwhile Liverpool, despite sitting seventh in the table and grinding out a dull goalless draw with Fulham at the weekend, at least have a Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on the board and a manager in Andoni Iraola who still believes in what he is building. The contrast between these two clubs heading into this EFL Cup third round tie could not be much starker.

There is a subplot here too, one that will not be lost on anyone who has followed Liverpool closely over the past decade. Andrew Robertson, nine years at Anfield, hundreds of appearances, titles, cups, European nights that will live forever in Merseyside folklore, walks back through those doors as a Tottenham player. Football is a strange and occasionally beautiful thing.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Details

This EFL Cup third round tie takes place at Anfield, Liverpool’s famous ground on Merseyside, and carries real weight for the home side given the club’s extraordinary history in this competition. Liverpool have won the EFL Cup ten times, more than any other club, and Iraola will be well aware that the fanbase expects the competition to be treated with respect rather than used purely as a rotation exercise.

Team News

Both managers have selection calls to make, though for very different reasons. Liverpool are expected to rotate heavily given the physical demands Iraola places on his squad across three competitions in a single week, while De Zerbi at Spurs may feel compelled to put out closer to his strongest side given the pressure already building around his position.

  • Wataru Endo is set to make his first appearance of the season for Liverpool, though he is likely deployed at centre back rather than in his natural midfield role
  • Trey Nyoni is expected to come into the Liverpool midfield and could be partnered with Alexis Mac Allister
  • Lewis Koumas is in contention to play as a number ten for the Reds
  • Cody Gakpo is the leading candidate to lead the Liverpool attack
  • Pedro Porro missed Spurs’ draw with Everton through a muscle issue and is not expected to be risked here, with Archie Gray likely to continue at right back
  • Robertson is fully expected to start for Spurs and face his former club for the first time
  • Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali are both expected to feature in the Tottenham midfield

Predicted Lineups

Iraola will shuffle the pack considerably here, but the squad depth at Liverpool is such that even a rotated side carries genuine quality. Mamardashvili starts in goal, with Frimpong and Tsimikas as the fullbacks and Endo slotting in alongside Araujo at the back. Mac Allister and Nyoni form the midfield base, with Koumas operating in the ten role between Ngumoha and Munoz out wide. Gakpo leads the line.

For Spurs, De Zerbi has to show some fight. Kinsky in goal, Gray at right back covering for Porro, Van Hecke and Senesi as the central defensive pairing, and Robertson on the left. Fernandes and Tonali in the engine room, Kudus, Gallagher and Savio behind Solanke. It is a lineup with talent on paper, but one that has produced absolutely nothing in front of goal so far this season.

Recent Form

Liverpool’s start to the season has been a curious mix. The win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League was genuinely impressive, a confident performance on the biggest stage that showed Iraola’s ideas can click when the players are fresh and switched on. But the Premier League picture is messier. Six points from twelve is not the platform a club with Liverpool’s ambitions needs, and the goalless draw with Fulham on Saturday was alarming in how little the Reds created. Wirtz, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch all struggled to impose themselves, and the absence of a proper midfield anchor who can drive the ball forward with purpose has become a recurring concern. Iraola’s system is physically demanding, and you could see the legs going against Fulham with players clearly feeling the effects of the midweek European trip.

Tottenham’s form is, frankly, catastrophic. Two defeats and two draws in their opening four Premier League fixtures, seventeenth in the table with just two points, and no goals at all in the league. The club spent close to 350 million pounds in the summer window and De Zerbi was heavily involved in those recruitment decisions, which makes the current situation all the more baffling. Brentford, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Everton were the opponents, not an impossible run of fixtures by any means. The concern is not just the results, it is the lack of any visible system or cohesion. On the road they drew one and lost one of their last two away days, though they did manage back to back wins to close out last season, so there is at least some evidence that the group can perform. Right now though, that feels a long time ago.

The EFL Cup adds a slight wildcard element. Liverpool have only won one of their three home games in all competitions this season, conceding three goals at Anfield in the process. That home form needs addressing, and this tie feels like a chance for some of the squad players to put their hands up.

Head-to-Head Record

The historical record between these two clubs tells you everything you need to know about where the power lies. Spurs have won just two of their last twenty meetings with Liverpool, losing fourteen of them. That is a staggering imbalance, and it speaks to how Tottenham have consistently crumbled under the weight of playing at Anfield or against a Liverpool side operating at pace.

Their 2023 win was tainted by circumstance, coming after Liverpool were reduced to nine men and had a goal wrongly chalked off despite VAR being in operation, so it hardly counts as a genuine reflection of Spurs being the better side on the day. And while Tottenham did beat Liverpool in the EFL Cup in January 2025, that result was rendered irrelevant when the Reds came through the semi final tie on aggregate. The head to head is not just unfavourable for Spurs, it is historically damning.

Key Stats

  • Spurs have scored zero Premier League goals in 2026/27, their worst ever start to a top flight season in front of goal
  • Liverpool have won fourteen of the last twenty meetings between these two clubs, with Tottenham winning just twice
  • The Reds have scored four and conceded three in their three home games across all competitions this season, showing Anfield is not the fortress it once was

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Betting Tips

The narrative here pretty much writes itself. Liverpool are not flying, but they are rotating into a cup tie at home against a Tottenham side that cannot score and are visibly short on confidence. The smart money is on Anfield coming alive as a release valve for some of the frustration that built up against Fulham, and on Spurs struggling to contain a Liverpool attacking unit that, even in its second string form, carries more threat than anything Tottenham have produced this season.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

This one is genuinely tricky. Spurs have not scored in the league all season, but De Zerbi will name a strong side and the EFL Cup format has a way of producing goals in unexpected places. Liverpool’s home defence has been penetrable this term, conceding three in three at Anfield, and Solanke will fancy himself against a reshuffled back line. On balance, the BTTS odds are worth considering as a yes, though you would not be betting your mortgage on it given how toothless Spurs have looked.

Cards Prediction

Expect a feisty affair in the middle of the park. Tonali and Mac Allister are both players who operate on the edge physically, and the emotional stakes of Robertson’s return will add an edge to proceedings around the flanks. The atmosphere at Anfield for a cup tie tends to crank up the intensity, and with Spurs under enormous pressure there will be a temptation to compete aggressively. Back over three and a half cards as a decent shout here.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Cody Gakpo gets the nod here. He leads the line for Liverpool in what should be a rotated but still attack minded setup, and he has form in these kinds of cup fixtures where the defensive lines are less organised than usual. With Spurs’ back four likely to be under sustained pressure and Gakpo’s movement in behind causing problems, he is a solid pick to open the scoring at a generous price given he is not the marquee name in this Liverpool squad.

Corners Prediction

Liverpool dominate possession and press high, which tends to generate corners in waves, especially at Anfield where the full backs push forward relentlessly. With Spurs set to be pinned back for large portions of this game, the home side should be winning corners consistently. Back over nine and a half corners as a strong play, possibly pushing to ten and a half if the price allows.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Cody Gakpo
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Corners Over 9.5

Gakpo breaking the deadlock in a game where Liverpool boss the territorial battle, Spurs nick one through Solanke or a set piece, and the corner count stacks up throughout as the Reds keep the pressure on throughout all four of those outcomes painting the same picture of Liverpool domination with Spurs nicking something on the break.

Final Match Prediction

Liverpool to win this, and win it comfortably. The combination of home advantage, cup motivation, squad depth and the very real fact that they are playing a side that genuinely cannot score all points in the same direction. Iraola will want a performance here after the flatness of the Fulham display, and the players who come into the side will be hungry to make a case for more starts. Robertson will get a warm reception when he touches the ball early on, and then Anfield will do what Anfield does and turn the volume up on the home side.

Spurs will not roll over completely, De Zerbi is too proud and too under pressure to send out a side that does not compete, but their attacking limitations are real and their confidence is shot. Liverpool to win 3 to 1, with the Reds providing a timely reminder that even when they are not at their peak, they remain a different class to a Tottenham side that is currently a work very much in progress.
