Thursday brings a packed schedule of first round action at the ATP 1000 event in Shanghai, with a healthy clutch of matches to get stuck into. There are some intriguing contests on the card, a few ranking battles adding extra spice, and at least one potential upset worth keeping a close eye on.

Pavel Kotov vs Tallon Griekspoor

These two have met five times before with Kotov holding a 3-2 lead in the head to head, which makes this more competitive on paper than it might look at first glance. Griekspoor has had a tough 2026 overall, but Shanghai has treated him kindly before. He picked up a notable win over Jannik Sinner here last year when the world number one was forced to retire during what had been a gruelling three hour battle. That result is now a points liability though, and Griekspoor is at real risk of dropping outside the top 60 in the rankings if results do not go his way this week.

Kotov, meanwhile, has slipped outside the top 150 and had to come through qualifying just to get into the main draw. He has been productive on the Challenger circuit this season but has not managed a win at tour level since 2024, and that gap in experience at this level is significant. Griekspoor carries far more pedigree for a hard court event of this magnitude, and despite his inconsistent year I expect him to have enough to get through this one.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Ilia Simakin

Simakin is a name that plenty of fans will not recognise yet, but the 22-year-old has been quietly putting together one of the most remarkable runs of form on the circuit since August. A 21 and 1 record across that period is extraordinary by any measure, and he has picked up multiple Challenger titles along the way to back it up. Ranked around 152 in the world, this is a significant step up in class, but the conditions in Shanghai have a habit of rewarding in form players regardless of their ranking. Vacherot showed that last year when he came from well outside the top 100 to win the entire title.

Carabelli has managed a 14 and 22 record in 2026 and has never really thrived on hard courts as a surface. He is a tough competitor and nobody’s idea of a pushover, but he is not in the kind of form that would give you confidence against someone riding the wave Simakin currently is. The Argentine will find it hard to live with that momentum and those Challenger level ball striking standards that have sharpened considerably over recent weeks.

Mariano Navone vs Pablo Carreno Busta

Navone leads their only previous meeting so the head to head offers little to go on, but the context around both players tells you plenty. Navone announced himself to a wider audience by beating Novak Djokovic at the US Open, which is the kind of result that does wonders for confidence at any level. The caveat is that Navone is primarily a clay court specialist, and his hard court win rate over the past 52 weeks sits at around 35 percent, which is not a figure that inspires total conviction.

Carreno Busta knows how to win on hard courts having taken an ATP 1000 title in Canada back in 2022, but his record specifically at Shanghai is a poor 3 and 5 and he has never really looked comfortable at this event in particular. Navone is the younger, hungrier player right now and the momentum is clearly with him. Despite the surface not being his absolute best, youth and form should carry him through here.

Thiago Agustin Tirante vs Hamad Medjedovic

This is a first meeting between the two and it arrives at a time when the form books could not point more clearly in one direction. Medjedovic went through a difficult run of six consecutive losses earlier in the summer and has not looked like the player many expected him to become at this stage of his development. Tirante, on the other hand, is playing the best tennis of his career right now, sitting at a career high around 54 in the world with a 27 and 18 record on tour this season.

The Argentine plays a physically demanding, high intensity brand of tennis that wears opponents down over long exchanges, and he is also capable of stepping in and hitting aggressively when the opportunity presents itself. This will be Tirante’s first appearance at Shanghai, but he will not be overawed. Medjedovic simply does not have enough consistency at this moment to trouble someone in this kind of touch.
