Feyenoord
AZ AlkmaarFeyenoord have a chance this weekend to do something that would get the whole of Dutch football talking. Beat AZ Alkmaar at De Kuip and they go top of the Eredivisie, leapfrogging the very side they are playing. That kind of fixture does not come around often, and when it does, you want to be watching.
AZ head into this one as league leaders, a position they inherited when PSV capitulated at FC Twente just before the international break. The Cheese Farmers have been genuinely impressive this season, unbeaten in the league, and they arrive in Rotterdam with real confidence. But history at De Kuip tells a very different story, and Feyenoord are flying right now. This one has all the ingredients.
This Eredivisie clash takes place at De Kuip in Rotterdam, one of the most atmospheric grounds in Dutch football and a venue where AZ have historically found it extremely tough going. It is gameweek eight of the Eredivisie season, and with the title picture already taking shape, this fixture carries serious weight for both clubs.
Feyenoord have a few bodies missing, which is a concern given the quality of the opposition, though Giovanni van Bronckhorst still has serious firepower available to him. AZ are considerably better off in this department heading into the game.
Van Bronckhorst has a fairly settled side despite the absentees, and with Anis Hadj Moussa in the kind of form he showed before the break, picking his attack is the easier part of the team sheet. The defensive setup requires a bit more juggling given the injuries at fullback, but the gaffer has options.
Feyenoord are likely to line up as: Ernst; Read, Marmol, St Juste, Lopez; Zechiel, Vanhoutte, Targhalline; Hadj Moussa, Ferri, Valente. For AZ, Pascal Jansen will probably go with: De Busser; Dijkstra, Goes, Schouten, Chavez; Kwakman, Koopmeiners; Oufkir, Byskov, Daal; Meerdink.
Feyenoord’s form before the break was a bit uneven at home, with two frustrating 2-2 draws against Go Ahead Eagles and ADO Den Haag leaving van Bronckhorst under pressure at De Kuip. But the last result before the international break was a proper statement. A 5-0 demolition of FC Utrecht, the kind of performance that reminds you what this team is capable of when everything clicks. That came on the back of an outstanding away record too, with wins of 5-2 at Cambuur, 3-1, and a frankly extraordinary 7-0 thrashing of PEC Zwolle on the road. They had just been waiting to reproduce that sort of form in front of their own fans.
AZ, meanwhile, have been relentless. Thirteen league games unbeaten is a run that demands respect, and they took full advantage of PSV’s slip at Twente to land at the top of the table heading into the break. Mexx Meerdink has been chipping in with goals from midfield areas, Ro-Zangelo Daal has four for the season, and the team has a shape and solidity to it that makes them genuinely difficult to break down. The concern for AZ is whether they can take that unbeaten run into De Kuip, a ground that has rarely been kind to them.
Hadj Moussa is the form player everyone needs to be keeping an eye on. Five goals in three league appearances before the break is the sort of purple patch that can define a season, and if he carries that into this fixture, AZ are going to have real problems. Add Gjivai Zechiel, who has five goals and four assists in the Eredivisie alone, plus Luciano Valente and Nacho Ferri both on four league goals each, and this Feyenoord attack is genuinely frightening right now.
This is where it gets uncomfortable for AZ. In the last ten meetings between these two sides, Feyenoord have won seven times and AZ have managed just one victory. Trips to De Kuip have been particularly grim for the Alkmaar side historically, and a brief two-game winning run in Rotterdam in 2019 and 2021 turned out to be nothing more than a blip. Five of the six following visits in all competitions went Feyenoord’s way. The most recent meeting, a 1-1 draw in May of last season, ended that run slightly, but AZ are still winless in six visits to De Kuip when you look at the broader picture.
For AZ to take anything from this ground they will need to produce something close to their best performance of the season. The head-to-head record alone should give Feyenoord real confidence going into Saturday.
The markets will probably respect AZ’s unbeaten run and price this up as a competitive contest, but the underlying picture here points strongly towards Feyenoord. They are at home, in devastating goalscoring form, and facing a side they have dominated at De Kuip for years. AZ will make it hard, but I expect the hosts to overpower them before the end.
Feyenoord 3-1 AZ Alkmaar. The hosts have the goals to blow teams away and AZ have the quality to nick one, but three points and three goals for Feyenoord feels like the most natural conclusion to this fixture given everything pointing their way right now.
Over 2.5 goals. Feyenoord are averaging well over two goals per game this season and their attack is in seriously good nick. Even if AZ set up to frustrate, this Feyenoord forward line has the individual quality to unlock them, and AZ are not the kind of side to park the bus entirely given they need a result too.
Over 9.5 corners. Feyenoord get forward in numbers and create a lot of wide situations, and if AZ spend significant periods under pressure at De Kuip, as their record there suggests they will, corners will accumulate quickly. Both sides push men forward and this should be an open enough game to generate plenty of set piece situations.
Anis Hadj Moussa to score first. The Algeria international was in an almost unplayable patch of form before the break, scoring five times in three league games, and he lines up in exactly the sort of position to get in early against an AZ side who will need time to settle at De Kuip. He is too good right now to ignore in the anytime and first goalscorer markets.
Yes. AZ have the attacking talent to cause problems even in a game where they are second best, and with Daal and Meerdink finding the net regularly, they are unlikely to be shut out entirely. Feyenoord’s defensive injury problems at fullback could leave space for AZ to exploit on the counter, making both teams to score a solid play here.
Over 3.5 cards. This is a fixture with genuine needle to it, title implications on top of that, and a Feyenoord crowd that will be right up for it from the first whistle. AZ will need to make some hard challenges as they try to contain a Feyenoord attack that is overflowing with quality, and the intensity of the occasion tends to push the card count up in matches like this one.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Feyenoord to Win |
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| First Goalscorer | Anis Hadj Moussa |
Feyenoord’s dominance at home in this fixture, AZ’s attacking threat making a clean sheet unlikely, and Hadj Moussa’s blistering pre-break form all point in the same direction and combine neatly into one bet builder.
Feyenoord 3-1 AZ Alkmaar. Van Bronckhorst’s side have been building towards a performance like this at De Kuip all season. The 5-0 win over Utrecht showed they can reproduce their away form on home soil, and now they have the perfect motivation in the shape of a league leader coming to town. AZ will not roll over, but the weight of history at this ground, the form of Feyenoord’s attackers, and the noise of the De Kuip crowd all point to a decisive home win.
AZ may well remain a genuine title challenger after this, but on Saturday they look set to drop their first points of the season, and Feyenoord look set to climb to the top of the Eredivisie table right where they feel they belong.
