CompetitionPortuguese Primeira Liga
Who do you think will win?

There is something fascinating about this fixture on paper. Arouca sit fifth in the Primeira Liga table, looking like genuine European hopefuls just a few weeks ago, and now they are navigating a managerial change mid season with a new head coach who has never done this job before. Vitor Severino steps up from the assistant ranks for his very first match as a senior gaffer, and the occasion could not be more loaded. Win this and Arouca close the gap on the top four. Stumble, and questions about Vasco Seabra’s departure and what comes next start getting very loud very quickly.

Estrela Amadora come into this one looking to bounce back after their unbeaten start to the campaign was ended in brutal fashion, a 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Academico de Viseu leaving Pepa’s side with questions of their own to answer. This is not a glamour clash, but it is exactly the kind of game that tells you everything about where two clubs genuinely are right now.

Arouca vs Estrela Amadora Match Details

The match takes place at the Estadio Municipal de Arouca, a compact ground holding just under 5,600 supporters, where the home crowd can generate real atmosphere and where Arouca have built a strong record in recent times. This is a Primeira Liga fixture with genuine mid table significance for both clubs, separated by just a single point heading into the weekend.

Team News

Arouca get a timely boost with Pablo Gozalbez returning to contention after the muscular problem that kept him out of the Sporting trip. Lee Hyunju is also back from international duty with South Korea. The one lingering concern is Miguel Puche, who continues his long road back from the serious knee injury picked up last season and is not expected to feature.

  • Pablo Gozalbez back in contention after muscular problem
  • Lee Hyunju returned from South Korea international duty
  • Miguel Puche still unavailable with a serious knee injury
  • Dylan Nandin pushing hard for a first start after his impact goal against Sporting

For Estrela, Jeremy Arevalo is a doubt with a lower back problem and Pepa will need to assess his eight internationals after the break. The good news is that Jefferson Encada, Santiago Serra, Stefan Lekovic and Rene Mitongo have all returned to training and should be available.

  • Jeremy Arevalo a doubt with a lower back problem
  • Eight players returning from international duty, fitness to be assessed
  • Encada, Serra, Lekovic and Mitongo back in training
  • Leandro Antonetti looking to end a run of three blanks in front of goal

Predicted Lineups

Severino is unlikely to tear things up completely in his very first match. Expect him to lean on the structure Seabra had built, with Gozalbez slotting back into midfield now he is fit. Nandin is the big selection call. He came off the bench to score against Sporting and was electric in that cameo, but starting him ahead of a more established option would be a bold call for a new manager on day one. Barbero leads the line.

Arouca expected lineup: De Arruabarrena; Esgaio, Sanchez, Fontan, Lebedenko; Fukui, Van Ee; Trezza, Gozalbez, Djouahra; Barbero

Pepa will want to restore some defensive solidity after the Academico horror show, but he has attackers who can hurt you on their day. Zvonarek and Marcus offer creativity in behind Antonetti, and with Lekovic back to shore up the defence, Estrela should look more organised than they did last time out.

Estrela Amadora expected lineup: Linck; Scholze, Lekovic, Schappo, R Soares; Serra, Doue; Marcus, Zvonarek, Stoica; Antonetti

Recent Form

Arouca’s form over the last five league games reads as a mixed bag, but the details matter more than the headline numbers. One win, against Maritimo, alongside defeats to Porto and Santa Clara, and draws with Estoril Praia and Sporting. That 2-2 draw at the Estadio Jose Alvalade is genuinely impressive when you dig into it. Arouca were two goals down at half time against a Sporting side who then had a man sent off, and they came back through Jose Fontan and Dylan Nandin to nick a point. There is fight in this group, even if the results have not always reflected the performances.

At home, Arouca have won five of their last seven games on their own patch. That is a foundation Severino can build on. The one blot was a defeat in their most recent home outing, which will sharpen the focus for Sunday. The manager will want to put that right immediately and establish himself in front of the home crowd.

Estrela were flying before last weekend. Six matches, finding the net at least twice in every single one, picking up results against Sporting, Braga and Nacional along the way. Then Academico arrived and punched them square in the face, scoring twice inside the first 24 minutes and shutting them out completely. It was the first time all season Estrela had failed to score. Whether that was a blip or something more revealing about their defensive frailties is exactly what this fixture will start to answer. Their away record across the last 12 league matches is a real concern too. One win, five draws and six defeats on the road. That is not a team you fear when they are not at home.

Head-to-Head Record

Estrela have not won at the Estadio Municipal de Arouca in their last three visits. Two draws and a defeat, and crucially they have not scored a single goal across all three of those trips. That is a miserable record on this ground and it plays heavily into the thinking for Sunday. Arouca know how to set up here, they know this surface, this crowd, this atmosphere, and historically they have found ways to keep Estrela quiet.

For a Pepa side that has been scoring freely, the idea that they have gone goalless in each of their last three visits here is a significant flag. Something about this ground does not suit them, and now they arrive off the back of a chastening defeat having not scored in their most recent outing either.

Key Stats

  • Arouca have won five of their last seven home games in the Primeira Liga
  • Estrela have won just one of their last 12 league matches away from home
  • Estrela have failed to score in each of their last three visits to Arouca
  • Arouca recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Sporting in their last outing, showing genuine resilience
  • Estrela scored 14 league goals this season but also conceded 14, highlighting a leaky backline

Arouca vs Estrela Amadora Betting Tips

The new manager bounce is a real thing in football, and Severino will want to stamp his authority immediately. Arouca’s home record, their historical dominance of this fixture against Estrela, and the visitors’ shocking form on the road all point in the same direction. This looks like a home win, but Estrela have the attacking talent to nick a goal even if they lose, so the game could have a bit of end to end quality about it.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Ivan Barbero is the man to watch here. He scored in each of his first two league games this season and has been ticking along since, alternating between scoring and going blank. He was quiet last time out, which by his own pattern suggests he is due a contribution. Starting up front against a Estrela back four that has conceded 14 goals this season, Barbero looks a decent shout to open the scoring.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

This is a tough one. Estrela have been scoring freely all season but went blank in their last game and have failed to score in each of their last three visits to this ground specifically. Arouca should find the net, but backing Estrela to score feels like going against some pretty firm evidence. The call here is no on BTTS, with Arouca having enough at the back on home turf to keep Pepa’s side out.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Leaning towards under 2.5 goals here. Arouca under a new manager may set up conservatively in the first instance, prioritising not losing over expansive football. Estrela’s away record is poor and their attack, though capable, has been blanked here three times on the bounce. A tight, competitive affair feels more likely than a goal fest.

Correct Score Prediction

Arouca 2-1 Estrela Amadora. The new boss gets his win, Barbero or Nandin get on the scoresheet, and Estrela nick a consolation but cannot find the second goal that would make it interesting. It fits the pattern of this fixture and the form lines coming into the game.

Corners Prediction

Backing over 9.5 corners in this one. Arouca press forward at home, Estrela will need to chase the game if they fall behind, and both sides have the width and energy to get balls into the box regularly. The tactical shape of this match, with a home side looking to be aggressive and visitors chasing, should produce a healthy corner count.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Arouca to Win
Both Teams To Score No
First Goalscorer Ivan Barbero

Arouca winning at home, keeping a clean sheet against a side that has failed to score here three times running, with their main striker getting off the mark in what should be a statement result for the new manager, all three elements support each other nicely.

Final Match Prediction

Severino gets his tenure off to a winning start. Arouca’s home record, the head to head history at this ground, and Estrela’s persistent struggles on the road all point to a home victory. The new manager factor adds an extra edge of motivation for the players, who will want to send a message that the transition in the dugout has not unsettled the group.

Estrela have the quality to cause problems but they have been consistently nullified here over recent seasons and arrive with defensive questions hanging over them. Arouca should be too strong on home soil. Prediction: Arouca 2-1 Estrela Amadora.
