Como
RomaComo have quietly built themselves into one of Serie A’s most compelling stories, but right now they need a response. Three weeks off has given Cesc Fabregas time to think, and you can bet he has been thinking hard about how his side let newly promoted Frosinone stroll to a 2-0 win and end a ten game unbeaten run. That defeat left Como sitting on 10 points from five games, just outside the leading pack, and with Roma arriving at the Sinigaglia this weekend, the pressure to put things right could not be much sharper.
Roma, meanwhile, are unbeaten and sitting top of Serie A. Gian Piero Gasperini has his side purring, and they come to Lombardy chasing a sixth consecutive away win in the league, something the Giallorossi have not managed since 2017. There is a subplot too: Gasperini is one win away from 300 top-flight victories as a manager. He will want it against a young gaffer like Fabregas. This one matters on multiple levels.
The game takes place at Stadio Sinigaglia on the shores of Lake Como, with the two sides meeting in Serie A. Both clubs qualified for the Champions League last season, and both came into this campaign with genuine ambitions of challenging Inter Milan at the top. The context could hardly be more loaded, with title race implications already starting to take shape this early in the season.
Fabregas is about as well stocked as a Como manager could hope to be heading into a game of this magnitude. Long-term absentee Jayden Addai has returned to full training, which means the hosts go into Sunday without any significant injury concerns. The main selection headache up front is a good problem to have.
Roma have a couple of players returning from knocks in time for this one, which gives Gasperini a fuller squad to work with than he has had recently.
Fabregas will likely stick with the shape that has served Como well through most of this season. Douvikas keeps his place up front given his record-breaking form, and the midfield trio of Da Cunha, Milla and the creative players around them should give Roma plenty to think about. The question is whether Fabregas trusts Kean enough to bring him straight back into the XI or uses him from the bench.
Como: Butez; Couto, Ramon, Chalobah, Valle; Da Cunha, Milla; Diao, Paz, Baturina; Douvikas
Gasperini has options all over the pitch with his squad close to full strength. Kone starts after his brace against Inter, and with Wesley back on the wing, Roma have real width and pace to hurt Como on the break. Malen leads the line and is the man in the best form in Italy right now, full stop.
Roma: Svilar; Mancini, Ndicka, Hermoso; Molina, Kone, De Roon, Wesley; Dybala, Mora; Malen
Como came into the international break on a wobble. Their 2-0 defeat at Frosinone was genuinely shocking given how solid they had been, and it snapped a run of 10 games without a loss. What made it worse was how it happened: a newly promoted side outworked and outfought them on the day. Fabregas knows his team were not at the races and will have made sure his players know it too. On the positive side, before that blip Como were one of the form teams in the division, and their home record at the Sinigaglia has been excellent, winning five of their last seven league games there.
There is also a clean sheet issue that has crept up on Como. Unlike last season when they were the meanest defence in the division, they have not kept a single clean sheet across any competition so far this term. Against a Roma attack as sharp as this one, that trend is going to be tested severely.
Roma’s recent form is the kind you dream about at the start of a season. Five games, five unbeaten, sitting top of the table on 13 points. They went to the San Siro and led Inter 2-0 through a Manu Kone double before being pegged back to 2-2, and even that draw felt like a minor frustration rather than a genuine setback. Away from home in the league they have been exceptional, and that European draw in Istanbul against Fenerbahce showed they can handle pressure in big atmospheres. Gasperini has got this team exactly where he wants them.
Here is where it gets really interesting for Como. Since winning promotion to Serie A in 2024, they have beaten Roma in both home matches at the Sinigaglia. That is a remarkable stat for a newly promoted club against a top four side, and it tells you something about how much Fabregas’s men raise their game in this particular fixture on home turf.
The March meeting at the Sinigaglia this year finished in a way that will stick in the memory too, with both Douvikas and Malen getting on the scoresheet. These two sides share goals when they meet, and there is no reason to think Sunday will be any different. Roma have had the better of things at the Stadio Olimpico recently, winning their last two home games against Como, but on Como’s patch it is a very different story.
This is a fixture that sets up beautifully for a cagey but goal-laden contest. Two sides who defend well but also carry real threat in the final third, a home team desperate to respond after a loss, and a visiting side chasing history. The angles are sharp here and there are a few markets worth getting stuck into.
Both of these sides have been prolific when they have met before, and neither has a clean sheet to their name this season. With Malen in the form of his life and Douvikas chasing goals on his home patch, over 2.5 goals looks the call. Back over 2.5 goals.
A game with this much riding on it, between two sides with genuine title ambitions, is going to be competitive and at times feisty. Both managers will demand intensity, and with high stakes come late challenges and flashpoints. Over 3.5 cards in this one makes plenty of sense. Back over 3.5 cards.
Roma press high and force teams into defensive clearances, while Como have the wide men and the ambition to push forward on the front foot at the Sinigaglia. Both sides getting forward with intent and a game that is likely to stay competitive throughout means corners should rack up. Over 9.5 corners is the play here.
Donyell Malen at first goalscorer is the standout pick. He is scoring at a rate that no other forward in Italy can match right now, he found the net the last time these sides met at the Sinigaglia, and he comes into this fully fit after shaking off that minor injury. Roma will get chances and Malen will be the one to take them.
Given how these two have played against each other recently, and the goal threat on both sides, a 2-1 scoreline feels right. Roma edging it on the road would be the kind of result that keeps their title charge on track, but Como will not go quietly in front of their own supporters. A 2-1 Roma win is the call.
Como have not kept a clean sheet all season, and Roma have the attackers to hurt any defence. Equally, Como at the Sinigaglia are a danger to any side, including unbeaten ones. Both teams to score is a yes, backed up by both sides finding the net in their most recent meeting at this ground.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Over 2.5 Goals | Over 2.5 |
| First Goalscorer | Donyell Malen |
Malen scoring in a game where both sides find the net and the goals flow freely is exactly the kind of scenario his current form points towards.
Como will be fired up at the Sinigaglia and their record in this fixture on home soil is impossible to ignore. Fabregas will have his team ready, and the crowd will be right behind them after that Frosinone setback. But Roma are a different proposition to anything Como have faced this season. Gasperini’s side have the experience, the quality and the momentum of an unbeaten run, and Malen in this kind of form is simply a nightmare to contain.
Roma to edge this one 2-1. Como will give them a proper game and will likely score, continuing that trend of open, goalscoring encounters between these two sides. But the Giallorossi have too much quality to come away empty handed, and Gasperini gets his 300th top-flight win in style.
