Who do you think will win?

Go Ahead Eagles and Sparta Rotterdam arrive at this one from very different directions, but they share one thing in common: a pressing need to start turning draws and defeats into wins. The Eagles were flying early in the season, picking up seven points from their opening three matches and briefly parking themselves as high as second in the Eredivisie. That early momentum has since stalled badly. Sparta, meanwhile, have gone from dreaming about European football at the turn of the year to looking nervously over their shoulder at the relegation places. Something has to give at De Adelaarshorst.

Joseph Oosting’s side have been infuriating to watch in recent weeks. The attacking quality is clearly there, they have the fifth best scoring record in the division with 16 goals, but the defensive side of things has been a mess. No clean sheets all season and an average of two goals conceded per game tells its own story. Sparta are arguably in an even worse spot. Rogier Meijer has taken over from Maurice Steijn and is still waiting for his first real sign that the ship is turning around. Five points from seven games, just one above the drop zone, and no wins in six. This fixture has pressure written all over it.

Go Ahead Eagles vs Sparta Rotterdam Match Details

This Eredivisie fixture takes place at De Adelaarshorst in Deventer, the compact and atmospheric ground that has been a genuine fortress for Go Ahead Eagles in recent months. The two clubs are separated by just five points in the table right now, but the gap in form and confidence heading into this one feels considerably wider than that.

Team News

Oosting has a couple of selection headaches to deal with. Sparta are a little lighter on the injury front but still have one notable absentee to manage around.

  • Pim Saathof is out long term after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury back in May. He is not close to returning.
  • Eus Waayers is also expected to miss out after being absent from the squad that faced NEC before the international break.
  • Mathis Suray was forced off injured during that NEC draw and his involvement this weekend is uncertain. If he cannot go, Oosting will need to reshuffle his attacking options.
  • Shunsuke Mito is Sparta’s only injury concern, having sat out the last two matches. The Japanese forward will be desperate to get back involved, particularly against a side he has scored against before.
  • Milan Zonneveld had his four game scoring streak snapped against Heerenveen but remains a threat Oosting’s defence will need to keep tabs on.

Predicted Lineups

Oosting will likely name an unchanged shape even if Suray cannot make it, with the Eagles set up to press high and get their wide players involved early. If Suray is fit enough to start, he slots in on the left of a front line with Tengstedt and Edvardsen leading the charge and Sigurdarson offering a focal point up top.

Go Ahead Eagles: Haug; Sampsted, Dirksen, Kramer, James; Meulensteen, Linthorst; Tengstedt, Edvardsen, Suray; Sigurdarson. Meijer will want his Sparta side compact and hard to break down, though with Mito a doubt, Van Bergen and Babadi will carry much of the creative responsibility alongside Zonneveld in attack. Sparta: Brouwer; Kuipers, Martins Indi, Young, Martes; Hatenboer, Baas; Van Bergen, Mito, Babadi; Zonneveld.

Recent Form

Go Ahead Eagles looked genuinely impressive in August, and that 7 point haul from their first three games had supporters daring to dream. Then came the 5-2 hammering from AZ Alkmaar and the wheels started to wobble. Since that defeat, they have drawn three on the bounce, including a 1-1 with NEC just before the international break. Four games without a win is a concern, but it is worth noting that their underlying numbers are not terrible. The goals are still going in at the right end. The problem is they keep letting them in at the other.

At De Adelaarshorst specifically, the Eagles have been a different animal. Since March, only PSV have managed to take maximum points from Deventer. Four of the last seven visiting sides have left with nothing, and that home record gives Oosting’s squad a real platform to build on. The crowd will be right behind them after a frustrating run of stalemates.

Sparta’s trajectory over the last few months makes grim reading. That run of five consecutive league wins between December and January felt like it could be the catalyst for a push up the table. Instead it turned out to be a false dawn. One win from their final 13 league games of last season cost Steijn his job, and Meijer has not yet managed to arrest the slide. A 4-0 thumping at Heerenveen last time out was a sobering afternoon, and no team has picked up fewer points than Sparta over the last five gameweeks. Two points from a possible fifteen is relegation form, pure and simple.

Head-to-Head Record

Sparta have actually been the dominant side in this fixture over recent memory, winning their last four meetings before an unbeaten run of three games for the visitors. Their most recent trip to Deventer yielded a convincing 3-0 win, and Meijer will have shown his players that footage this week as evidence that a result here is achievable regardless of current form.

That said, the pattern of recent meetings feels less relevant when you look at where both clubs are right now. Sparta in their current state are a very different proposition to the side that was chasing Europe six months ago. The head to head history offers them some grounds for optimism, but it would be a stretch to read too much into it given the gulf in confidence between the two sets of players right now.

Key Stats

  • Go Ahead Eagles have conceded at least once in every league game this season, averaging two goals against per match.
  • Only PSV have taken three points from De Adelaarshorst among the last seven visiting sides since March.
  • Sparta have picked up just two points from their last five Eredivisie gameweeks, the worst return of any side in that period.

Go Ahead Eagles vs Sparta Rotterdam Betting Tips

This is a match between a side who cannot stop conceding and a side who cannot stop losing. Go Ahead have the home advantage, the better form in relative terms, and a crowd behind them after a frustrating few weeks. Sparta are short on confidence and have nothing in the tank defensively to suggest they can keep things tight. The value here points firmly towards the home side getting the win, with goals at both ends looking a near certainty given what both back fours have shown us this season.

Correct Score Prediction

A 2-1 home win feels about right. Go Ahead have the firepower to win this but their defensive frailties mean Sparta will grab at least one, likely through Zonneveld or Van Bergen catching them on the break.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Tengstedt is worth backing here. He is operating in a high tempo Eagles attack with plenty of service around him, and with Sparta’s defence looking porous after conceding four against Heerenveen, there should be opportunities in behind for a forward of his movement and pace to exploit.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, and it is hard to argue against it. Go Ahead have not kept a single clean sheet all season and Sparta, despite their troubles, still have Zonneveld and Van Bergen capable of punishing a defence that switches off. BTTS yes looks like one of the more straightforward calls on the card this weekend.

Corners Prediction

Go Ahead Eagles play with width and get plenty of bodies forward, which tends to generate corner volume at home. Sparta will also need to push on as the game progresses if they find themselves chasing it. Back over 9.5 corners as the more likely outcome in a game where both sides are motivated to attack.

Cards Prediction

Sparta are in a desperate position and their players know it. That kind of pressure often leads to niggly fouls and frustration as the game gets away from them. With Go Ahead looking to press high and make life uncomfortable for a rattled visiting back line, expect cards to flow. Over 3.5 cards is a reasonable call in a tense fixture with plenty riding on it for both dugouts.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Go Ahead Eagles to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
Total Cards Over 3.5

A home win with goals at both ends and a feisty card count fits the profile of this fixture perfectly given the pressure on Sparta and the defensive vulnerabilities on show from both sides all season.

Final Match Prediction

Go Ahead Eagles to win 2-1. The Eagles are not in great form by their own early season standards, but Sparta are in a far worse place and De Adelaarshorst has been a difficult place for visitors to come and get anything from in recent months. Oosting’s side have the attacking quality, the crowd, and the home advantage working in their favour.

Sparta will not lie down. Zonneveld is capable of producing something from nothing and Meijer needs a response after the Heerenveen humiliation. But chasing a game against a side that scores freely is not where you want to be when your defensive record is as shaky as Sparta’s. The Eagles edge it, though the clean sheet drought carries on.
