Who do you think will win?

Romania have not picked up a single point in this Nations League group so far, and their form has not just been poor, it has been alarming. A 6-0 hammering in Warsaw on Friday was their heaviest defeat in nearly sixty years, and it has left Gheorghe Hagi staring down the barrel of relegation from Nations League League B before the campaign is even halfway done. When you concede six in ninety minutes, with ten men for most of it, there are serious questions being asked about the squad, the system, and whether this group can find any sort of response at all.

Sweden, on the other hand, are rolling. Graham Potter has his side sitting two points clear at the top of Group B4, unbeaten in three, and looking every inch a team that knows where it is headed. They are not perfect, clean sheets remain a stranger to this squad, but Viktor Gyokeres is in the kind of form that makes opposition defences look over their shoulder before the game has even started. Romania need to win this one to keep any hope alive. Sweden just need to keep doing what they are doing.

Romania vs Sweden Match Details

Romania host Sweden at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest, with the fixture coming off the back of a brutal international window for the home side. This is a Nations League League B Group 4 clash, and with Romania rooted to the bottom without a point, the pressure on Hagi and his players to deliver something in front of their own supporters could not be much greater.

Team News

Romania go into this one with real problems at the back, and Sweden are also shuffling their defensive pack after a difficult few days injury wise.

  • Radu Dragusin is suspended after his red card against Poland, a hammer blow given Romania already look shaky defensively
  • Virgil Ghita is also banned, serving a one-match suspension for an accumulation of bookings, so Romania lose both of their first-choice centre-backs in one go
  • Andrei Coubis, Andrei Burca, Bogdan Racovitan and Matei Ilie are all options to fill the void at the heart of the back four
  • Ionut Radu is expected to return in goal after Otto Hindrich shipped six in Warsaw
  • Alexander Isak remains absent for Sweden after picking up a minor injury in the first meeting with Romania
  • Emil Holm is also out with a thigh problem sustained in that same opener
  • Carl Starfelt was forced off against Bosnia with a thigh injury and will not be available here either
  • Eric Smith, who came on as a replacement for Starfelt, and new call-up Victor Eriksson are competing to start alongside Lindelof in central defence
  • Several Sweden players including Yasin Ayari, Benjamin Nygren and Gustaf Lagerbielke were ill before the Bosnia fixture, though Potter has brought in replacements to bolster numbers

Predicted Lineups

Hagi has some serious reshuffling to do. With Dragusin and Ghita both unavailable, the manager looks likely to turn to Coubis and Burca to form a makeshift centre-back pairing. Ionut Radu should reclaim the gloves, and in attack Man and Birligea give Romania their best chance of troubling Sweden. Expect Olaru and Stanciu to be handed responsibility for making things happen in the final third.

Romania expected lineup: Radu; Ratiu, Coubis, Burca, Eissat; Olaru, M Marin, Baluta, Stanciu; Man, Birligea

Potter will likely keep faith with the majority of his settled side. Gyokeres leads the line, as he always does right now, and the midfield three of Bernhardsson, Larsson and Karlstrom should provide the platform. The main question is who partners Lindelof at the back, with Eric Smith the most likely candidate after stepping in against Bosnia.

Sweden expected lineup: Johansson; Gudmundsson, Lindelof, E Smith, Dahl; Bernhardsson, Larsson, Karlstrom, Nanasi; Gyokeres, Zeneli

Recent Form

Sweden are in decent nick despite not quite hitting the heights consistently. Potter has overseen five wins in thirteen games since taking the job in October last year, with four draws and four defeats filling out the rest. The draw in Zenica against Bosnia showed both sides of this team in one ninety minutes, Gyokeres putting them ahead, the defence then switching off to let an equaliser in late. They have not kept a clean sheet in any of those thirteen outings, which is a pattern worth keeping front of mind when assessing how this one will play out. The one black mark on their scoring record was a 3-0 defeat to France, but they have found the net in every other game under Potter.

Romania’s campaign has been a disaster from the jump. They went down 2-1 to Sweden in Solna in the opener, then suffered a 4-2 home defeat to Bosnia that already felt damaging. But Friday in Warsaw was something else entirely. A 6-0 thrashing in which Dragusin was sent off early, conceded a penalty as a result of the red card, and then watched Lewandowski complete a hat-trick as Poland ran riot. That result is Romania’s heaviest defeat since 1967, which tells you everything about how badly wrong it went.

The one sliver of encouragement for the home side is that Romania have won four of their last five games at the Arena Nationala. Playing in front of their own supporters has consistently brought something different out of this team, and Hagi will lean on that hard in his team talk. But the opposition quality, the injury crisis in defence, and the fragile confidence in the squad right now makes it very hard to back them to turn things around here.

Head-to-Head Record

Sweden have the upper hand in this fixture in recent memory, winning four of the last five meetings against Romania and scoring multiple goals in each of those victories. The lone exception is the one defeat in that run, which tells you these games are not always comfortable for the Scandinavians, but the overall picture is firmly in their favour. Earlier in this very campaign, Sweden beat Romania 2-1 in Solna, making this the reverse fixture with Romania already on the back foot psychologically as well as in the standings.

The head to head form backs up the idea that Sweden score when they face Romania, and with Gyokeres in this kind of mood, there is little reason to think that changes on Monday evening.

Key Stats

  • Sweden are unbeaten in 4 of their last 5 meetings with Romania, winning 4 of those and scoring multiple goals in every win
  • Viktor Gyokeres has scored in six consecutive Nations League matches, making him the first player to achieve that run in the competition’s history
  • Romania have conceded 12 goals in 3 Nations League games this campaign, and now face this fixture without either of their first-choice centre-backs
  • Sweden have not kept a clean sheet in 13 matches under Potter, meaning goals for the home side remain very much on the table despite Romania’s struggles

Romania vs Sweden Betting Tips

Sweden are the obvious side to be on here, and the angle almost picks itself. Romania are missing both first-choice centre-backs, they are carrying the weight of a six-goal thrashing from three days ago, and their opponents are in the kind of form that breeds confidence. But Sweden’s defensive record means Romania can find a way onto the scoresheet, and with Gyokeres firing on all cylinders, there are goals to be had at both ends of the pitch.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Viktor Gyokeres is the obvious choice and there is absolutely no shame in going with the obvious choice here. He is scoring in consecutive Nations League games, he leads the line with real authority, and Romania are lining up a patchwork back four in front of them. Gyokeres to score first is the selection that makes the most sense in this fixture.

Correct Score Prediction

Given Sweden’s tendency to concede and Romania’s ability to find the net at home even in a poor run of form, a 2-1 away win feels like the most likely landing spot. Sweden have the quality to win comfortably, but their defensive fragility suggests Romania will get at least one back before the final whistle.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, and with some confidence. Sweden have not kept a clean sheet in thirteen games under Potter, and Romania, even in their battered and depleted state, have scored in enough home games to suggest they will trouble the Swedish backline at least once. The hosts are desperate, playing at home, and have the attacking quality to test a Sweden defence that is also missing players. BTTS looks solid here.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. Romania have been leaking goals at a frightening rate and Sweden have been finding the net regularly throughout this campaign. You have two sides who struggle to keep clean sheets going up against each other, and Romania have now conceded twelve goals in just three group games. This has the feel of a game where the goals flow, and backing over 2.5 is a comfortable call.

Cards Prediction

Romania are under serious pressure at home and facing elimination from the second tier of the Nations League if results continue to go against them. That kind of desperation tends to lead to some rash challenges and frustrated moments, especially with an inexperienced back four trying to deal with Gyokeres and company. Back over 3.5 cards in this one, with the Romania defenders most likely to find themselves in the referee’s notebook.

Corners Prediction

Sweden control possession well and like to work the ball into wide areas, which tends to generate corners consistently. Romania, when chasing the game, also push bodies forward and invite pressure in transition. Over 9.5 corners across the ninety minutes feels very achievable in a game where Sweden are expected to dominate large spells and Romania will need to launch attacks of their own to stay in it.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Viktor Gyokeres
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over 2.5

Gyokeres to break the deadlock fits perfectly with an open game where both sides find the net and the goals keep coming throughout.

Final Match Prediction

Romania will give this everything they have at the Arena Nationala because they have to. Hagi will demand a response, the crowd will get behind them, and there is genuine quality in that attacking line. But the defensive situation is a real concern, and Sweden arrive with momentum, a goalscoring machine up front, and a very good recent record in this fixture.

Sweden to win 2-1 is the call. Romania find the net because Sweden cannot stop conceding, but Gyokeres and co have enough to take the three points and move closer to securing the group. For Hagi’s side, it could be the result that effectively ends their promotion hopes before the final weeks of the campaign.
