CompetitionEnglish League Championship
Who do you think will win?

Sheffield United desperately need a lift right now. Three defeats on the spin before the international break, including that gut-punch loss at Stoke where they led through Kalvin Phillips and still ended up with nothing, has left them down in 18th with their season stuttering badly. Chris Wilder will have spent the past three weeks trying to get heads right and reset the group. Nine points from eight games was not the plan when pre-season optimism was running high.

Lincoln City, though, arrive at Bramall Lane with genuine belief coursing through the club. Winning League One with 103 points last season was a statement, and despite losing promotion-winning boss Michael Skubala over the summer, the Imps have adapted well under Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw. Eleventh on the road before the break, three straight away league wins in the bank, and one of the tightest defences in the division. They are not here to make up the numbers.

Sheffield United vs Lincoln City Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United’s iconic ground that has hosted second-tier football far more than the club’s ambitions would want lately. The Blades will be desperate to put on a show in front of their own supporters after a torrid run, while Lincoln City make the trip looking to prove their Championship credentials against a side who should, on paper at least, have too much quality for them.

Team News

Sheffield United are carrying a few injury concerns heading into this one, while Lincoln City have their own absentees to manage coming out of the break.

  • Femi Seriki is out for Sheffield United with the defensive absence felt across their recent poor run.
  • Harrison Burrows also remains sidelined for the Blades in the back line.
  • Ryan One is still unavailable for Wilder in attack.
  • Tom Hamer, Tendayi Darikwa and Mason Melia are all out for Lincoln City.
  • Chiedozie Ogbene, who spent last season on loan at Bramall Lane, could start at wing-back for the Imps, which will make for an interesting subplot.

Predicted Lineups

For Sheffield United, Kalvin Phillips will almost certainly continue in the middle of the park after starting the two league games before the break, with Sydie Peck alongside him after a solid run of appearances for England Under-21s during the international window. Patrick Bamford leads the line, and with Ben Brereton Diaz and Romelle Donovan pushing for spots, Wilder has options but also some selection headaches in his attacking third. Tom Cannon, Tahith Chong and Oliver Arblaster are all in the mix too, so whoever gets the nod to support Bamford needs to make it count.

Lincoln City look set to continue with their back three of Deji Elerewe, Sonny Bradley and Ryley Towler, which has been the backbone of that impressive defensive record. The midfield pairing of Tom Bayliss and Conor McGrandles has been a reliable engine room, and Cohen and Shaw may resist the temptation to bring Yunus Konak into the side from the off. Ogbene at wing-back against his former employers will be one to watch throughout.

Recent Form

Sheffield United’s form makes grim reading for Blades supporters. Back-to-back defeats in the league followed by that Stoke collapse, and sandwiched in there was an EFL Cup embarrassment against Fleetwood Town from League Two. That is a horrible sequence for any manager to navigate, and the mood around S2 would have been pretty dark heading into the international break. Their only league wins of the campaign came earlier in the season, the most recent a trip to Blackburn in early September, and they have not managed a home league victory that you could point to as convincing this term.

Lincoln City’s recent form tells a very different story. Three successive away league wins is an outstanding record for a newly promoted side, and even their defeat at leaders Swansea before the break came with plenty of credit attached. They led at half time through Reeco Hackett-Fairchild before Swansea turned it around, but going toe to toe with the Championship’s pacesetters and taking the game to them in the first half shows real character. Only two teams have conceded fewer than Lincoln’s eight goals in the league this season, and that solidity on the road is not luck, it is organised defending and a clear structure that Cohen and Shaw have drilled into the group quickly.

The contrast between these two sides right now is stark. Sheffield United are a club with Premier League pedigree in their recent past, clearly underperforming their own expectations. Lincoln City are punching with confidence and a settled system that is producing results. The break might prove vital for the Blades as a reset moment, but it also hands Lincoln fresh legs and time to prepare their gameplan for this one.

Head-to-Head Record

These clubs have not shared a division for a considerable stretch, so head-to-head records are not particularly useful as a guide here given Lincoln City’s return to the Championship for the first time in 65 years. There is little recent competitive history between the sides at this level to lean on, which in some ways makes this even more fascinating as a matchup. Sheffield United’s players will know the majority of their opponents are relative unknowns at Championship standard, and Lincoln will see that as motivation rather than anything else.

One thread of history worth noting is that Chiedozie Ogbene featured for Sheffield United last season on loan, so he will know Bramall Lane well and may fancy the occasion as a personal showcase. That kind of motivation can sometimes be the difference in a tight game.

Key Stats

  • Lincoln City have conceded just eight league goals in eight games, one of the best defensive records in the Championship this season.
  • Sheffield United have won only two of their eight league games this term and are yet to truly convince at home in the league.
  • Lincoln have won their last three away league matches, showing they travel well and are no pushovers on the road.

Sheffield United vs Lincoln City Betting Tips

This is a match where the form book pulls you in competing directions. Sheffield United have the home advantage and the theoretical quality edge, but they are shot of confidence right now and facing a Lincoln side who defend well and win away games. The smart money here is on a low-scoring, hard-fought affair rather than anything with goals flying in at both ends.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals is the call here. Lincoln City’s defensive solidity is real and not just small sample noise, and Sheffield United have been misfiring all season. A tight, scrappy game feels far more likely than an open one given the stakes for the hosts and the structure Lincoln bring on the road.

Cards Prediction

With Sheffield United needing a result and feeling the pressure of a poor run, expect some edge and desperation from the home side. Lincoln will be well-organised and deliberate in their defending. That combination typically generates a few bookings, and over 3.5 cards in the match looks a reasonable shout for a game with this much riding on it for the Blades.

Correct Score Prediction

A narrow 1-0 Sheffield United win feels right. The home advantage matters, the international break could be the reset Wilder needed, and Lincoln’s away form, while impressive, may come up against a Bramall Lane crowd desperate for something to cheer about. A single goal from Bamford or one of the attackers off the bench settles it.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

No on both teams to score. Lincoln City’s defensive record throughout the season has been genuinely impressive, and Sheffield United have not been free-scoring themselves. The Imps will be well-drilled, narrow and compact, and the Blades are not sharp enough in front of goal right now to guarantee getting through that. Expect a clean sheet for one side, likely Lincoln conceding if the Blades nick it.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Result Sheffield United to win
Both Teams To Score No
Total Goals Under 2.5

A Sheffield United win with a clean sheet in a low-scoring game ties together three angles that all point to the same kind of match, one decided by a single goal with Lincoln’s attack unable to unlock a Blades side that needs to dig deep and grind one out.

Final Match Prediction

Sheffield United 1-0 Lincoln City is where we are landing. The Blades have enough quality when things click, and a three-week break to clear the air and get some work on the training ground done could be exactly what this squad needed. Bramall Lane deserves a performance, and the players know it.

Lincoln City will make this difficult. They always seem to make things difficult, and that is a genuine compliment to what Cohen and Shaw have built. But facing a side with Sheffield United’s resources, in their own stadium, after an extended break where the gaffer has had the whole squad together and has been able to address what has gone wrong, the Imps may just find this is one step too far. The Blades nick it with a goal that probably does not arrive until the second half, but it is enough.
