Who do you think will win?

Watford cannot afford to let this one slip. Three defeats in a row would be a brutal way to return from the international break, and with the Hornets already sitting in the relegation zone, a home game against the Championship’s only winless side is exactly the kind of fixture you have to take three points from. Alessio Dionisi knows it, the Vicarage Road faithful know it, and frankly Burnley know it too. The question is whether a Clarets side drowning in a crisis of confidence can cause a surprise.

Burnley’s fall has been genuinely staggering to watch. Twelve months ago they were competing with Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League. Now they are the only team in the second tier without a single win to their name, sitting bottom of the Championship table and shipping goals at an alarming rate on the road. Nicky Hayen keeps insisting the breakthrough is coming. His players are running out of time to prove him right.

Watford vs Burnley Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at Vicarage Road in Hertfordshire, as Watford look to build on back to back home wins against Southampton and Preston North End and give their supporters something to shout about after a dispiriting few weeks. The competition context is straightforward and brutal. Both clubs are deep in the lower reaches of the Championship table, and the three points on offer here could prove decisive come May.

Team News

Watford have had some good news from the treatment room during the international break, though they are far from a clean bill of health heading into this one.

  • Jordan Zemura and Marc Bola have both returned to first team training after injury and could push for involvement.
  • Edoardo Bove remains sidelined and will not feature.
  • Jeremy Ngakia is still absent for the Hornets.
  • Kwadwo Baah is also unavailable for Dionisi.

Burnley have their own selection headaches, though there is a potential bright spot with a young player edging closer to action.

  • Jaydon Banel could be in line for his first start of the season after returning to training following injury.
  • Josh Cullen is back on the grass but is working his way back from a serious knee injury suffered in December 2025 and is not yet ready to return.
  • Hannibal Mejbri is out for up to four months with a hamstring problem, which is a significant blow to Hayen’s midfield options.

Predicted Lineups

Dionisi is likely to name a settled side after the break, with Amin Nabizada keeping his place after an impressive start to the season. The academy graduate has been one of very few positives for the Hornets in 2026/27 and he will be central to their attacking play again here.

Watford: Ravaglia; Keben, Pollock, Coulibaly, Traore; Kayembe, Kyprianou, Maamma, Bravo, Nabizada; Doumbia.

Hayen faces a midfield reshuffle with Mejbri unavailable, and the big talking point is whether Banel gets thrown in from the start. Zeki Amdouni will carry the goalscoring burden again after returning from international duty in fine form, with three goals in four matches for Switzerland giving him a much needed confidence boost.

Burnley: Coudert; Roberts, Ahmedhodzic, Julio, Pires; Edwards, Laurent, Alleyne, Hatate; Brunn Larsen, Amdouni.

Recent Form

Watford’s form makes for uncomfortable reading. Four defeats from their last five Championship fixtures is not the record of a side that looks like turning a corner any time soon, and that solitary loss at Ashton Gate just before the international break was particularly grim viewing. A Dominic Ballard goal was all it took for Bristol City to see them off. The Hornets have now gone four away matches without a win, drawing one and losing three, which is why picking up points at Vicarage Road is so critical. Their two home wins this season, both by 2-1 scorelines against Southampton and Preston, show that they are at least a different proposition on their own patch.

Burnley’s situation is even more dire. Eight games into the Championship season and they have not won a single one. Their most recent outing summed up the whole miserable campaign: Amdouni gave them the lead, they looked like finally ending the run, and then Mohamed Fuseini equalised for Derby in the 93rd minute. That kind of thing breaks teams. The Clarets have just four points to show for those eight matches, and their away record is a disaster. Eleven goals conceded across four road trips, one measly point collected. Hayen is under enormous pressure and the performance levels are simply not good enough for a squad that contains Kyle Walker and Jamie Vardy.

Both sides arrive here needing this badly, but Watford’s home form versus Burnley’s away form tells you everything about the balance of this contest. The Clarets have been leaking goals every time they leave Turf Moor, and Vicarage Road is not going to be an easier night out.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs have met plenty of times across the Championship over the years and the fixture has rarely produced dull encounters. Watford have generally been the stronger side at home in recent meetings, and given the respective positions of these clubs right now, there is little reason to think Saturday will buck that trend. Burnley’s away form this season is so poor that even a routine home win for Watford would fit neatly into the pattern of their recent head to head history.

Key Stats

  • Burnley have conceded 11 goals in just four away Championship matches this season, the worst record in the division on the road.
  • Watford have won both of their home fixtures in 2026/27, keeping themselves competitive at Vicarage Road even while struggling everywhere else.
  • Amin Nabizada has three Championship goals in eight appearances this season, making him Watford’s standout attacking threat from an unconventional position.
  • Burnley are the only team in the entire Championship yet to register a single win, sitting bottom with four points from eight games.

Watford vs Burnley Betting Tips

This fixture has the feel of a game where the home side, desperate for points and playing in front of their own supporters, grind out a win against a Burnley team that simply does not know how to keep clean sheets away from home. The goals angle is interesting too, because while Watford are not free scoring, Burnley’s defensive fragility on the road gives you real confidence that the net will be bulging at least a couple of times before full time.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Watford have shown they can find the net at home, and Burnley have Amdouni who is bang in form after his international exploits. Hayen’s side have also shown they can score, they just cannot stop conceding. With Watford’s own defensive injury issues still present, both teams finding the net feels very likely here.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Amin Nabizada is the pick. Three goals in eight Championship appearances for an academy graduate who has become the focal point of Watford’s attacking play is genuinely impressive, and with Burnley conceding so freely on the road, a positive and direct Hornets start seems probable. Nabizada has the hunger and the form to get on the scoresheet early.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards feels like decent value here. Burnley are a side under enormous pressure and their players are likely to be wound tight. Watford will be aggressive and direct at home knowing what is at stake. Desperation from the away side mixed with intensity from the hosts in a high stakes lower table scrap is a fairly reliable recipe for the referee reaching into his pocket on multiple occasions.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. Burnley’s inability to keep clean sheets away from home is the driving factor here. They have conceded 11 in four away games, which is an extraordinary number. Watford are not prolific, but they do not need to be. The Clarets’ defensive frailty almost guarantees there will be goals at Vicarage Road, and if Amdouni fires again, the over lands comfortably.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Watford to Win
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Amin Nabizada

A Watford win with both sides scoring and Nabizada opening the scoring ties together the home side’s defensive vulnerability, Burnley’s attacking spark through Amdouni, and the Hornets’ most in form player all in one clean combination.

Final Match Prediction

Watford 2-1 Burnley. The Hornets get the job done at home, as they have done in both previous home fixtures this season. Burnley will cause some anxiety, Amdouni will probably get involved in a goal given his current form, but the sheer weight of defensive catastrophe that follows Burnley around on the road makes it very hard to back them to take anything from Vicarage Road.

Dionisi’s side are not in great shape overall, but at home against the Championship’s bottom club, this is a fixture they are capable of winning. Three points here would be huge for Watford’s confidence and their place in the table. Burnley’s winless run, barring a remarkable turnaround, looks set to extend to nine matches.
