The league was formed in 1998 and runs from March to October with matches being played across Australia and New Zealand.
The winner of the NRL is determined by the NRL Grand Final at the end of the season with there currently being 12 different teams who have won it since the league was introduced. The Gold Coast Titans, Canberra Raiders, Parramatta Eels and the New Zealand Warriors are the only teams who are yet to win a Grand Final.
Controversy hit the NRL in 2010 when Melbourne Storm were found to have breached the salary cap. This resulted in all honours achieved between 2006 to 2010 being removed which included their 2007 & 2009 league titles. Melbourne Storm have won an additional three titles not counting the two which they were stripped of.
