England face Slovenia in their third and final group stage match of the tournament. The game will kick-off at 8pm on Tuesday 25th June and take place at RheinEnergieStadion, the home of Bundesliga club FC Köln.
By this point, lets hope that England have the group tied up and can head into this match slightly confident of finishing top of Group C. It’s a game that Southgate’s men are fully expected to win and I really can’t see any other outcome.
Odds for England vs Slovenia won’t be released until the tournament is underway given that this is England’s final match of the group stage. However, we can still take a look at the fixture and determine what some of the best bets may be.
Depending on how the first two rounds of fixtures go, England could already have the group tied up before this game. If that’s the case, Southgate could very well choose to rest certain players in preparation for the knockout stages. However, the players that are given a chance will be eager to prove their worth and as such, I can imagine some lively performances from bench players.
A somewhat comfortable win for England is expected which should hopefully be enough to see them top Group C and head into the knockouts with confidence high.
You could make a case for Slovenia getting something from this game if they were playing on home turf. They’re a tough team to beat at the Stožice Stadium but have far less luck on their travels.
One thing going for them is that they finished level on points with Denmark in their qualifying group. Picking up 22 points from a possible 30, whilst scoring 20 goals and conceding 9. That looks decent on paper but considering their opponents were Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland and San Marino, along with Denmark, it’s not something to get too excited about.
This is the first time Slovenia will be participating in European Championship in over 20 years, having failed to qualify for the last five tournaments. They’ve also been absent from the World Cup since 2010 and so experience may not be a strong point with their players.
Prediction: England to Win to Nil
Despite averaging two goals per game throughout qualifying, Slovenia do lack an attacking threat. That won’t help matters against an England squad full of quality in the final third and they should struggle to get chances in front of goal. Couple that with England’s usually solid defence and we could see England win the match whilst keeping a clean sheet.
Prediction: England 2-0 Slovenia
As we’re expecting England to win this game to nil, or at best, Slovenia grabbing a single goal, our Over/Under predictions are really determined by how many goals we expect England to score.
With this being England’s third game of the tournament, there initial nerves should have passed and Southgate’s men should be in full swing. That may mean that we could see multiple goals from England with the likes of Harry Kane and others eager to get on the scoresheet during the group stages in a bid to add to their tally before the tougher games in the knockouts arrive. However, going off how Southgate has approached major tournaments in the past, we could also see quite a conservative and cautious approach to this game, which may be especially true if England have not secured the top spot heading into the match. If a point is needed to achieve that feat, then a point is what Southgate will play for with the hope of winning as an added bonus.
Under 2.5 goals is a slightly risky bet in my opinion. Under 3.5 would be the preferred selection albeit at a lower price.
Prediction: Under 3.5 Goals
