The Mares’ Novices Hurdle is a Grade 2 hurdle race for novice mares that has been run at Cheltenham Festival since 2016. Run on the Old Course over a distance of 2 miles and 1 furlong, the race is open to mares aged four and older. It is a relatively new addition to the festival’s race card but has quickly established itself as a key event on the schedule.
The Mares’ Novices Hurdle features 8 hurdles to be jumped, and has been won by some notable mares in its short history, including Epatante and Roksana.
The Mares’ Novices Hurdle showcases some of the most talented young mares in National Hunt racing. The race is a key stepping stone for mares who are looking to establish themselves as stars of the future.
The Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle is a race that continues to grow in quality each year, and it’s one Will Smith and Dave Young always monitor closely through the season. With many of these mares still learning and improving from run to run, there’s often room for the market to overlook a performer who’s progressing at a good rate.
You may see the occasional ante-post opinion for this race if Will or Dave feel a mare has taken a big step forward and hasn’t been fully recognised by the market. Early selections can be especially useful here, as this division can change shape quickly depending on how the top yards campaign their youngsters. Head over to our ante-post tips page and you’ll find all of their early selections there.
Once final declarations are confirmed, race-day advice will give a clearer look at the likely pace, how the form ties together, and which mares might improve again for stepping up in grade. This is a race where both analysts pay particular attention to strong finishing efforts earlier in the season. All of Will & Dave’s Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle tips can be found at the top of this page and on our main horse racing tips page on the day of the race.
From time to time, one of their 2027 Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle selections may feature in Will Smith’s EW Lucky 15 during the Festival. His Lucky 15s have produced excellent long-term results, and this race has provided some eye-catching prices over the years.
Along with ante-post, daily, and EW Lucky 15 tips, WhichBookie will also be sharing Placepot tips on ach day of the Cheltenham Festival. You can also view our extra place races list to see which betting sites are paying out on more places than the industry standard.
This race has been very consistent in terms of age and profile. All ten winners were aged either five or six, and every winner finished in the first three on their previous start. Six of the ten had run at least four times over hurdles, while all had either already faced geldings or won a graded mares’ hurdle last time out.
Favourites have struggled, with the last seven market leaders beaten, six of them starting at under 3/1. Trainer patterns are also clear, with Willie Mullins 0-22 in the last five renewals, while Henry de Bromhead has a stronger recent record. Nine of the ten winners had already placed over at least 2m2f, highlighting the importance of proven stamina at this trip.
The Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle is run over 2 miles and 179 yards on the New Course at Cheltenham.
The race is restricted to novice mares, meaning female horses in their first season competing over hurdles.
It is a Grade 2 race and has quickly become an important target for top-class novice mares.
The race was introduced to the Cheltenham Festival programme in 2016 to strengthen opportunities for mares.
