Completing the big-field scenarios of the novice hurdles this week is the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at 3.20, and Doctor Steinberg will do for many, given how he has improved and looked impressive at the DRF.
However, I don’t particularly think the form of that race is overly strong and we’ve seen plenty of winners from that meeting disappoint this week. So, the main advice would be the back Thedeviluno at 6/1 each-way with BetMGM or VirginBet for 4 places, who chased him home over an inadequate 2m4f at Navan the time before.
A turn of foot won the day at Navan, and since then Thedeviluno has gone on to show himself to be extremely good and an extremely strong stayer by winning a vintage edition of the River Don last month. I thought perhaps he should be at least vying for joint favouritism on that evidence, if not maybe slightly shading it.
If you like the River Don form, then you should also like the run of Kicour La, who eventually faded to finish fourth. The first three home that day were all kept towards the inside of the hurdle track, perhaps on virgin ground in between the hurdle and chase tracks, and also the front two were held up off a searching gallop.
Kicour La was forcing that gallop and he was wide all the way, perhaps on more chewed-up ground. That he only tired between the final two hurdles was probably an exceptional run.
So, with respect afforded to both Doctor Steinberg and Thedeviluno, you can back Kicour La at 50/1 each-way for 3 places in their market ‘without Doctor Steinberg and Thedeviluno.’ Quite how he is virtually the outsider of the whole field and so big in that market too is baffling.
Another horse to have a small play on in the same ‘without Doctor Steinberg and Thedeviluno’ market is Swindon Village at 50/1 each-way also with Bet365 for 3 places. Charlie Longsdon has had a quite season, but Swindon Village has been running well when many other haven’t, and he also shouldn’t be one of the complete outsiders.
DOCTOR STEINBERG is a relentless galloper and I’m not sure I see the same thing in his being as keen and free is he keeps being made out to be. He just looked ears pricked like he’s loving life out there. The fact Willie Mullins shows some concern about the way he travels with a view to the Albert Bartlett does have to be considered but also it should be considered that Paul Townend says he can settle him.
His three hurdle runs to date have come in fields of 8 5 and 8 where there hasn’t been an abundance of alternative pace on. In his three bumpers where he was beaten in two of them he ran against 13, 14 and 10 rivals and didn’t look keen in any of those.
For me his racing style doesn’t mean we’re not seeing the best of him, I accept this is a unknown going up to this trip and I concede that he was definitely keen in the early stages at the DRF and took a little time to settle but he did well enough when Henry De Bromheads horse took over for him. That horse failed to finish, the horses travelling in 3rd and 4th didn’t see out their races, so I think it emphasises just how good a horse DOCTOR STEINBERG is to do what he did.
I know we can look at last years renewal and say the race suits horses from off the pace with Jasmin De Vaux but Stellar Story was on the pace and The Jukebox Man led, Stay Away Fay led, Vanillier was prominent, Monkfish led and was handy, Minella Indo was prominent, and Kilbricken storm was on the pace. It suits horses who run to their styles and being on the premises, for me is a positive and I’m sure he can take a lead just like he did in the DRF and in a bigger field he’ll have more horses offering to do that.
I’d also like some cover with MONDOUI’BOY who I believe can fill the frame in this contest despite his lack of hurdle experience because what he’s achieved in his two starts has been on a steep trajectory. He’ll need to step forward to threaten this field for win purposes but I believe he has the talent in his locker given the strength of his bumper form and he left the impression on both hurdle starts that this trip will bring about the best in him so he looks potentially overpriced.

The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle takes place on day 4 of the Cheltenham Festival and precedes the prestigious Gold Cup. It is a Grade 1 race that is open to novice hurdlers aged four years or older and is run over a distance of 3 miles.
Run on the New Course, the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle features 12 hurdles to be jumped and is one of the most prestigious long-distance hurdle races in the National Hunt calendar.
Past winners of the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle include the likes of At Fishers Cross, Unowhatimeanharry and Monkfish.
The Albert Bartlett is a real stamina test for novice hurdlers, and it’s a race Will Smith and Dave Young always analyse in depth.
