There’s no hiding place in this years’ Supreme with plenty of talented novices in contention. I do believe that OLD PARK STAR correctly heads the ratings in this contest though and his latest two wins have come in races which have seen some decent British novices, although not Supreme winners in waiting. That said, he’s a good way clear of the previous winners of both of those trials on Racing Post Ratings and he’s less exposed than some in here.
OLD PARK STAR – 2 STAR WIN @ 9/4

The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 1 race that opens the Cheltenham Festival. It is a 2-mile hurdle race for novice hurdlers and has been held since 1946. Taking place on the Old Course at Cheltenham, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is one of the most prestigious hurdle races in the National Hunt calendar.
Over the years, the event has seen some great champions like Vautour, Altior and Douvan. In 2022 a new race record was set by Constitution Hill when ridden by Nico de Boinville, winning the race by 22 lengths in a record time of 3 minutes 44.43 seconds.
The Festival opener is always huge in terms of betting interest, and if you’re looking for reliable Novices’ Hurdle tips for Cheltenham 2026, you’ll find everything you need right here. The Supreme has a reputation for producing future stars, and our Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting tips will highlight the emerging talent, and any runners who look overpriced as the race approaches. You can view all of our Supreme tips at the top of this page or had to our main racing tips page to view them alongside others for races taking place today.
Because the novice hurdle division changes rapidly during the season, there are times when the early markets can offer real value. When that happens, you may come across Supreme Novices’ Hurdle ante post tips, particularly if a standout performance hints that a horse should be much shorter in the betting by the time March arrives. Our racing analyst Will Smith has several ante-post tips published for Cheltenham 2026.
As soon as the final field is confirmed, Will and Dave will provide up-to-date Supreme Novices’ Hurdle tips on the day of the race or before. Many WhichBookie followers also keep an eye on Will Smith’s EW Lucky 15 during Cheltenham week considering his record throughout the year for his selections.
The Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle usually goes to a horse that has already shown strong form earlier in the season. Thirteen of the last fifteen winners had previously won a graded novice hurdle, and most arrived at Cheltenham off the back of a win, showing how rarely this goes to a horse without proven form at this level. The betting has often reflected that, with the majority of recent winners starting at single-figure prices.
Trainer records are also hard to ignore. Willie Mullins and Nicky Henderson have trained nine of the last thirteen winners between them, so this race has regularly been won by runners from those two yards. Age also plays a part, with five- and six-year-olds making up almost all recent winners, particularly those with a solid strike-rate over hurdles and at least a couple of wins already on the board.
The Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is run at 1:20pm on Champion Day and officially opens the Cheltenham Festival each year.
The race is run over 2 miles and 87 yards on Cheltenham’s Old Course.
The race is restricted to novice hurdlers, meaning horses in their first season competing over hurdles.
As the opening race of the Festival, it often features some of the most exciting young hurdlers in training and regularly produces future Grade 1 stars.
Yes, several past winners have progressed to compete at the highest level, including in the Champion Hurdle.
